Bram: Hoi Mieke. Ik heb een vraag. Een vriend van mij moet een DigiD aanvragen. Ik weet niet meer precies hoe dat moet.
Hi Mieke. I have a question. A friend of mine needs to apply for a DigiD. I don't remember exactly how that works anymore.
Mieke: Haha, dat snap ik. Jij hebt jouw DigiD al heel lang. Ik help je even op een rijtje te zetten.

Bram: Fijn! Wat is een DigiD ook alweer precies?
Great! What exactly is a DigiD again?
Mieke: Een DigiD is je digitale identiteit. Je kunt ermee inloggen bij de overheid.
A DigiD is your digital identity. You can use it to log in with the government.

Okay. How can my friend apply for a DigiD?
Mieke: Hij heeft een computer nodig. En internet. Hij gaat naar de website digid.nl.
He needs a computer. And internet. He goes to the website digid.nl.
Bram: Goed, de website digid.nl. En dan?
Okay, the website digid.nl. And then?
Mieke: Hij klikt op 'aanvragen'. Hij heeft zijn burgerservicenummer nodig. Het BSN.
He clicks on 'apply'. He needs his citizen service number. The BSN.
Bram: Zijn BSN. Dat staat op zijn paspoort of ID-kaart.
His BSN. That's on his passport or ID card.
Mieke: Klopt. Hij vult zijn BSN in. Hij kiest ook een gebruikersnaam. En hij kiest een wachtwoord.
Correct. He fills in his BSN. He also chooses a username. And he chooses a password.
Bram: Een gebruikersnaam en een wachtwoord. Die moet hij goed onthouden.
A username and a password. He must remember those well.
Mieke: Zeker. En dan is de aanvraag klaar. Hij moet dan wachten.
Certainly. And then the application is ready. He then has to wait.
Bram: Wachten? Waarop moet hij wachten?
Wait? What does he have to wait for?
Mieke: Hij krijgt een brief thuis met de post. Dat duurt ongeveer drie werkdagen.
He will receive a letter at home by post. That takes about three working days.
Bram: Een brief? Waarom geen e-mail?
A letter? Why not an email?
Mieke: Een brief is veiliger. De brief komt naar zijn officiële adres. Zo weten ze zeker dat hij het is.
A letter is safer. The letter comes to his official address. That way they are sure it's him.
Bram: Dat is wel logisch. Wat staat er in die brief?
That makes sense. What's in that letter?
Mieke: In de brief staat een speciale code. Dat is de activeringscode.
The letter contains a special code. That is the activation code.
Bram: En wat doet hij met die code?
And what does he do with that code?
Mieke: Hij gaat weer naar de website. Hij moet zijn DigiD activeren. Hij gebruikt daarvoor zijn gebruikersnaam, zijn wachtwoord en de code uit de brief.
He goes back to the website. He needs to activate his DigiD. For that, he uses his username, his password, and the code from the letter.
Bram: Aha. En daarna is de DigiD klaar voor gebruik?
Aha. And after that, is the DigiD ready for use?
Mieke: Ja. Dan kan hij inloggen bij de overheid.
Yes. Then he can log in with the government.
Mieke: Wat belangrijk is om te onthouden: een gebruikersnaam en een wachtwoord kies je zelf. De activeringscode krijg je in een brief. Die code heb je maar één keer nodig.
What's important to remember: you choose a username and a password yourself. You receive the activation code in a letter. You only need that code once.
Bram: Oké, dus: de gebruikersnaam, het wachtwoord, de brief en de activeringscode. Duidelijk.
Okay, so: the username, the password, the letter, and the activation code. Clear.
Mieke: Let op voor je examen. Je krijgt vaak een vraag over de stappen. Onthoud de volgorde: eerst online aanvragen, dan wachten op de brief, en daarna pas activeren met de code.
Pay attention for your exam. You often get a question about the steps. Remember the order: first apply online, then wait for the letter, and only then activate with the code.
Bram: Dus als ik een vraag krijg, moet ik onthouden: eerst de website, dan de brief, dan de code.
So if I get a question, I need to remember: first the website, then the letter, then the code.
