Mieke: Nee, zeker niet. Dat is een veelvoorkomend misverstand. Kom, dan leg ik het je wel even uit.

Bram: Graag! Want wat is nou het grote verschil?
Gladly! Because what's the big difference then?
Mieke: Kijk, het inburgeringsexamen is vooral bedoeld om te laten zien dat je je in het dagelijks leven kunt redden in Nederland. Het taalniveau is A2.
Look, the civic integration exam is mainly intended to show that you can manage in daily life in the Netherlands. The language level is A2.
Bram: A2... dat is toch dat je een simpel gesprek kunt voeren? Over het weer en boodschappen doen?
A2... that's being able to have a simple conversation, right? About the weather and grocery shopping?
Mieke: Precies. Het is de basis. De meeste mensen die moeten inburgeren, gaan dat examen doen. Het is een verplicht onderdeel van de inburgering.
Exactly. It's the basic level. Most people who need to integrate will take that exam. It's a mandatory part of civic integration.
Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En het Staatsexamen NT2 dan? Dat klinkt veel serieuzer.
Okay, clear. And the State Exam NT2 then? That sounds much more serious.
Mieke: Dat is het ook. Het Staatsexamen is op een hoger niveau: B1 of B2. Dat heb je vaak nodig als je wilt gaan studeren aan een hbo of universiteit.
It is. The State Exam is at a higher level: B1 or B2. You often need that if you want to study at a university of applied sciences or a university.
Bram: Ah, dus als een nieuwkomer bijvoorbeeld arts wil worden hier, dan gaat hij of zij het Staatsexamen doen?
Ah, so if a newcomer, for example, wants to become a doctor here, then he or she will take the State Exam?
Mieke: Inderdaad. Dan moet je laten zien dat je de taal goed genoeg beheerst voor een complexe studie of een baan op hoger niveau. Daar is een goede voorbereiding voor nodig.
Indeed. Then you have to show that you master the language well enough for a complex study or a higher-level job. Good preparation is needed for that.
Bram: En wat betekenen B1 en B2 dan? Ik zie hier 'Programma I' en 'Programma II' staan.

Mieke: Klopt. Programma I is voor niveau B1. Dat is vaak geschikt voor werk of een opleiding op mbo-niveau. Programma II is B2, en dat is echt voor hbo en de universiteit.
That's right. Program I is for level B1. That's often suitable for work or vocational education. Program II is B2, and that's really for universities of applied sciences and universities.
Bram: Wacht even, dus als je het Staatsexamen haalt, hoef je dan het inburgeringsexamen niet meer te doen?
Wait a minute, so if you pass the State Exam, you don't have to take the civic integration exam anymore?
Mieke: Dat klopt meestal. Als je slaagt voor het Staatsexamen, krijg je een vrijstelling voor de taalonderdelen van het inburgeringsexamen. Je toont immers een hoger niveau aan.
That's usually correct. If you pass the State Exam, you get an exemption for the language components of the civic integration exam. After all, you demonstrate a higher level.
Bram: Handig. En met zo'n diploma, of eh, certificaat, kun je je dan inschrijven bij een universiteit?

Mieke: Ja, met het certificaat van Programma II kun je je aanmelden. De keuze voor het examen hangt dus helemaal af van wat je in de toekomst wilt gaan doen.

Bram: Helder. En het is dus vooral geschikt voor mensen die hier een vervolgopleiding willen doen.

Mieke: Even een tip voor het KNM-examen, Bram. Ze stellen hier vaak een vraag over. Onthoud goed: het inburgeringsexamen is op taalniveau A2. Dat is een belangrijk feitje.
