Bram: Oh echt? De gemeente helpt dus ook als het niet verplicht is? Dat wist ik helemaal niet. Dat is wel goed geregeld eigenlijk.

Bram: Een Taalhuis? Wat is dat precies? Een huis vol met boeken?

Mieke: Haha, nee. In een Taalhuis kun je gratis hulp krijgen met de Nederlandse taal. Je kunt er bijvoorbeeld oefenen op de computer, of boeken lezen in makkelijk Nederlands.
Haha, no. In a Taalhuis, you can get free help with the Dutch language. For example, you can practice on the computer, or read books in easy Dutch.
Bram: En krijg je dan ook les?
And do you get lessons there too?
Mieke: Niet echt een formele taalles zoals hier. Maar je kunt er wel een taalcoach vinden. Dat is een vrijwilliger die je helpt met praten. Je gaat dan bijvoorbeeld een keer per week samen een kopje koffie drinken en Nederlands oefenen.
Not really a formal language lesson like here. But you can find a language coach there. That's a volunteer who helps you with speaking. For example, you'll go for a coffee together once a week and practice Dutch.
Bram: Wacht even, een taalcoach? Dus een Nederlander die je vrijwillig helpt met de taal? Dat is een supergoed idee!

Mieke: Ja, en voor je examen moet je weten: je krijgt vaak een vraag met een mailtje of een brief van de gemeente. Als je daarin het woord 'Taalhuis' of 'bibliotheek' leest, gaat het bijna altijd over gratis hulp bij het leren van Nederlands.
Yes, and for your exam you need to know: you often get a question with an email or a letter from the municipality. If you read the word 'Taalhuis' or 'library' in it, it's almost always about free help with learning Dutch.
Bram: Oké, dus als ik op het examen een vraag krijg over iemand die vrijwillig Nederlands wil leren... Dan moet ik weten dat hij bij de gemeente of in het Taalhuis in de bibliotheek terechtkan voor hulp.
