Bram: Mieke, kun je even helpen? Ik heb post van mijn werk gekregen.
Mieke, can you help for a moment? I received mail from my work.
Mieke: Natuurlijk. Wat is het?
Of course. What is it?
Bram: Het is mijn eerste loonstrook. Maar ik snap er niks van. Al die getallen...
It's my first payslip. But I don't understand anything about it. All those numbers...
Mieke: Ah, de eerste loonstrook. Ja, die kan verwarrend zijn. Laten we samen kijken.
Ah, the first payslip. Yes, it can be confusing. Let's look together.
Okay, do you see this large amount at the top of the page?
Bram: Ja, dat zie ik. Er staat 'bruto loon'.
Yes, I see that. It says 'gross pay'.
Mieke: Precies.
Exactly. That's the total wage you earned this month.
Bram: Wauw, dat is veel! Krijg ik dat allemaal?
Wow, that's a lot! Do I get all of that?
Mieke: Haha, nee, helaas niet. Dat is het bedrag vóór de aftrek.
Haha, no, unfortunately not. That's the amount before deductions.
Bram: Aftrek? Wat bedoel je?
Deductions? What do you mean?
Mieke: Kijk hier.
Look here. It says 'wage tax'. That's another word for tax.
Bram: Ah, de belasting. Die betaal je aan de overheid.
Ah, the tax. You pay that to the government.
Mieke: Klopt.
That's right. For the roads, the hospitals, and the schools, for example.
Bram: Oké, dat is duidelijk. En wat staat hieronder? 'Premies'.
Okay, that's clear. And what's below here? 'Contributions'.
Mieke: Ja, je betaalt ook premies. Dat is geld voor sociale verzekeringen.
Yes, you also pay contributions. That's money for social insurance.
Bram: Sociale verzekeringen? Wat is dat?
Social insurance? What is that?
That's for if you get sick, for example. Or if you lose your job.
So that's a kind of insurance for my income.
Mieke: Heel goed. Dat is het precies. Je bouwt ook aan je pensioen.
Very good. That's exactly it. You also build up your pension.
So from my gross pay, the tax is deducted. And the contributions are also deducted.
Mieke: Juist.
Right. And the amount that remains... do you see that here at the bottom?
Bram: Ja, hier. 'Netto loon'. Dat is een stuk minder geld!
Yes, here. 'Net pay'. That's a lot less money!
Mieke: Dat klopt.
That's right. But that's the amount the employer will transfer.
Okay, so the net pay goes into my bank account.
Mieke: Inderdaad. Dat is jouw salaris. Het geld waar je boodschappen mee doet.
Indeed. That is your salary. The money you use for groceries.
That's important to know. Gross is the fairy tale, net is the reality, haha.
Haha, you could see it that way, yes.
Okay, so those two words are the most important: gross and net.
Yes, for your exam you really need to know those. Gross is the entire wage. Net is what you have left after deducting tax and contributions.
Simpel.
Gross is before tax, net is after tax. Simple.
Mieke: Precies. Dat moet je onthouden.
Exactly. You need to remember that.
Heel belangrijk.
And then another tip for the KNM exam. Very important.
Bram: Ik luister.
I'm listening.
On the exam, you often see a picture of a payslip. The question is: 'What is the net pay?'
Bram: Ah!
Ah!
Then always look for the amount at the bottom line. That is the correct answer.
Bram: Oké, even op een rijtje. De werkgever betaalt een bruto loon. Daar gaat belasting af. En premies gaan eraf.
Okay, to recap. The employer pays a gross wage. Tax is deducted from that. And contributions are deducted.
Mieke: En wat hou je dan over?
And what do you have left then?
Bram: Het netto loon.
The net pay. And that amount is transferred to my bank account.
Mieke: Perfect. Je hebt het helemaal begrepen.
Perfect. You've understood it completely.
Bram: Fijn, dankjewel voor de uitleg, Mieke.
Good, thank you for the explanation, Mieke.
Mieke: Graag gedaan, Bram. Tot de volgende keer!
You're welcome, Bram. Until next time!
Bram: Doei!
Bye!
