Bram: Wauw, Mieke, kijk nou. Wat een enorm papier! Ik wist niet meer dat het stembiljet zó groot was. Ik voel me net een kind met een kleurplaat.
Wow, Mieke, look. What enormous paper! I didn't remember the ballot paper was so big. I feel like a child with a coloring page.
Mieke: Haha, ja, het is altijd even indrukwekkend. Maar het is een goed teken, het betekent dat we veel te kiezen hebben. Dit zijn de verkiezingen voor de Tweede Kamer.
Haha, yes, it's always quite impressive. But it's a good sign, it means we have a lot to choose from. These are the elections for the House of Representatives.
Bram: Ja, dat is waar. Maar hoe werkt het ook alweer? Er staan zó veel namen op. Moet ik alles lezen?
Yes, that's true. But how does it work again? There are so many names on it. Do I have to read everything?
Mieke: Nee, gelukkig niet. Kijk, het is georganiseerd in kolommen. Elke kolom is een politieke partij. Meestal weet een kiezer al op welke partij hij of zij wil stemmen.
No, luckily not. Look, it's organized in columns. Each column is a political party. Usually, a voter already knows which party he or she wants to vote for.
Bram: Oké, dus ik zoek eerst de partij van mijn keuze. En dan? Er staan allemaal namen onder.
Okay, so I first look for the party of my choice. And then? There are all names underneath.
Mieke: Dat zijn de kandidaten van die partij. De persoon die bovenaan staat, is de lijsttrekker. Veel mensen stemmen op die persoon. Maar je mag op iedereen op de lijst stemmen.
Those are the candidates of that party. The person at the top is the party leader. Many people vote for that person. But you can vote for anyone on the list.
Bram: Ah, dus als ik een andere kandidaat beter vind, kan ik ook op nummer 5 of nummer 10 stemmen?
Ah, so if I prefer another candidate, I can also vote for number 5 or number 10?
Mieke: Precies. Dat is je stemrecht. Jij beslist. Als je je keuze hebt gemaakt, ga je naar zo'n stemhokje daar. Daar kleur je het vakje naast de naam van je kandidaat rood.
Exactly. That is your right to vote. You decide. Once you've made your choice, you go to one of those polling booths over there. There you color the box next to your candidate's name red.
Bram: En wat dan? Dan vouw ik dit enorme ding op en dan gaat het in die grote bak daar?
And then what? Then I fold up this enormous thing and it goes into that big box over there?
Mieke: Ja, dat is de stembus. Je vouwt je stembiljet zo op dat niemand kan zien wat je hebt gestemd. Stemmen is geheim in Nederland. Niemand mag jouw keuze beïnvloeden.
Yes, that's the ballot box. You fold your ballot paper so that no one can see what you voted for. Voting is secret in the Netherlands. No one may influence your choice.
Bram: Dat is wel goed geregeld. En dit gebeurt dus eens in de vier jaar?
That's well organized. And this happens once every four years?
Mieke: Voor de Tweede Kamer wel, ja. Er zijn ook andere verkiezingen, bijvoorbeeld voor de gemeente of voor Europa, maar de landelijke verkiezingen zijn het grootst.
For the House of Representatives, yes. There are also other elections, for example for the municipality or for Europe, but the national elections are the biggest.
Bram: En wanneer weten we dan wie er gewonnen heeft?
And when do we know who won?
Mieke: Vanavond laat komt er een voorlopige uitslag. De stemmen worden geteld nadat de stembureaus sluiten om negen uur 's avonds. De officiële uitslag duurt een paar dagen.
Late tonight there will be a preliminary result. The votes are counted after the polling stations close at nine in the evening. The official result takes a few days.
Bram: Oké, dus even voor de duidelijkheid: dit grote papier is het stembiljet. En die doos waar het ingaat, is de stembus. Logisch eigenlijk.
Okay, so just for clarity: this big paper is the ballot paper. And that box it goes into is the ballot box. Logical, actually.
Mieke: Precies. En jij bent de kiezer, en de persoon op wie je stemt is de kandidaat. Die woorden moet je echt kennen voor het examen.
Exactly. And you are the voter, and the person you vote for is the candidate. You really need to know those words for the exam.
Bram: Helder. Kiezer, kandidaat, stembiljet, stembus. Ik schrijf ze op.
Clear. Voter, candidate, ballot paper, ballot box. I'll write them down.
Mieke: Wat belangrijk is voor je KNM-examen: je ziet soms een plaatje van een stembiljet. De vraag is dan vaak: wat is correct? Onthoud: je mag maar één vakje rood kleuren. Niet twee, en ook geen kruisje zetten. Alleen één bolletje helemaal rood maken.
What's important for your KNM exam: you sometimes see a picture of a ballot paper. The question is often: what is correct? Remember: you may only color one box red. Not two, and don't put a cross either. Only make one circle completely red.
Bram: Ah, dat is een goede tip. Dus als ik een vraag zie over stemmen, moet ik zoeken naar het antwoord met maar één ingekleurd rood bolletje.
Ah, that's a good tip. So if I see a question about voting, I need to look for the answer with only one colored red circle.
Mieke: Precies. Dat is de enige juiste manier om te stemmen. Zo wordt je stem geldig verklaard.
Exactly. That is the only correct way to vote. That's how your vote is declared valid.
Bram: Oké, ik ga het stemhokje in. Ik voel me nu een expert.
