Bram: Pfoe, wat is het hier druk. En Mieke, hoor jij dat ook? Ik hoor bijna meer Engels dan Nederlands om me heen.
Phew, it's so busy here. And Mieke, do you hear that too? I hear almost more English than Dutch around me.
Mieke: Haha, ja, dat klopt. We zijn in de universiteitsbibliotheek, hè? Veel studies zijn tegenwoordig helemaal in het Engels.
Haha, yes, that's right. We're in the university library, right? Many courses nowadays are entirely in English.
Bram: Echt waar? Waarom is dat eigenlijk? Vroeger was alles toch gewoon Nederlands?
Really? Why is that, actually? In the past, everything was just Dutch, wasn't it?
Mieke: Zeker, maar de wereld is meer internationaal geworden. En Nederlandse universiteiten zijn heel populair bij buitenlandse studenten.
Certainly, but the world has become more international. And Dutch universities are very popular with international students.
Bram: Ah, logisch. Dus dan bieden ze een Engelstalige studie aan, zodat studenten van over de hele wereld hier kunnen komen studeren.
Ah, that makes sense. So then they offer an English-taught program, so that students from all over the world can come and study here.
Mieke: Precies. Voor veel studies is de voertaal nu Engels. Dat betekent dat alle lessen, boeken en examens in het Engels zijn.
Exactly. For many programs, the language of instruction is now English. That means all classes, books, and exams are in English.
Bram: Oké. En kan iedereen zich daar dan zomaar voor inschrijven?
Okay. And can anyone just enroll for that?
Mieke: Nee, zo makkelijk is het niet. Er zijn altijd toelatingseisen. Je hebt bijvoorbeeld een diploma nodig van het juiste niveau.
No, it's not that easy. There are always admission requirements. For example, you need a diploma of the right level.
Bram: Een toelatingseis... dat zijn dus de regels om mee te mogen doen?
An admission requirement... so those are the rules to be allowed to participate?
Mieke: Juist. En voor een Engelstalige studie is de belangrijkste eis natuurlijk dat je Engels goed genoeg is.
Right. And for an English-taught program, the most important requirement, of course, is that your English is good enough.
Bram: En hoe controleert de universiteit dat? Gaan ze je dan bellen?
And how does the university check that? Are they going to call you then?
Mieke: Haha, nee. Meestal moet je een officiële taaltoets doen. Bijvoorbeeld de IELTS-test of de TOEFL-test. Dat is een examen waarmee je je Engelse niveau bewijst.
Haha, no. Usually you have to take an official language test. For example, the IELTS test or the TOEFL test. That's an exam with which you prove your English level.
Bram: Oh ja, daar heb ik wel eens van gehoord. Dus bijna elke buitenlandse student die hier wil studeren, gaat eerst zo'n taaltoets maken.
Oh yes, I've heard of that. So almost every international student who wants to study here first takes such a language test.
Mieke: Inderdaad. Als je de test haalt en je diploma is goed, dan kun je de aanmelding doen. En als je wordt toegelaten, ga je collegegeld betalen.
Indeed. If you pass the test and your diploma is good, then you can apply. And if you are admitted, you will pay tuition fees.
Bram: Het collegegeld, ja. Dat is het bedrag dat je betaalt voor je studie. Is dat voor iedereen hetzelfde?
The tuition fees, yes. That's the amount you pay for your studies. Is that the same for everyone?
Mieke: Nee, en dat is een belangrijk punt om te weten. Voor studenten uit de Europese Unie is het collegegeld veel lager dan voor studenten van buiten de EU.
No, and that's an important point to know. For students from the European Union, the tuition fees are much lower than for students from outside the EU.
Bram: Wauw, dat wist ik niet. Dat is een groot verschil. Dus als je hier een Engelse studie volgt, hoef je geen Nederlands te kunnen?
Wow, I didn't know that. That's a big difference. So if you follow an English program here, you don't need to know Dutch?
Mieke: Voor de studie zelf niet. Maar voor het dagelijks leven hier is het natuurlijk wel heel handig. Je gaat boodschappen doen, je zoekt een kamer... Dan is Nederlands wel fijn.
For the study itself, no. But for daily life here, it's certainly very useful. You go grocery shopping, you look for a room... Then knowing Dutch is helpful.
Bram: Ja, dat snap ik wel. Anders is het ook zo ongezellig.
Yes, I understand that. Otherwise, it's also so unsociable.
Mieke: Wat belangrijk is om te onthouden voor je examen zijn de woorden 'de toelatingseis' en 'de voertaal'.
What's important to remember for your exam are the words 'the admission requirement' and 'the language of instruction'.
Bram: Oké, dus 'de toelatingseis' is de voorwaarde, zoals een diploma of een taaltoets. En 'de voertaal'?
Okay, so 'the admission requirement' is the condition, like a diploma or a language test. And 'the language of instruction'?
Mieke: Dat is de taal van de lessen. Als de voertaal Engels is, is de hele studie in het Engels.
That is the language of the lessons. If the language of instruction is English, the entire study program is in English.
Mieke: Even een tip voor je examen. Je krijgt vaak een vraag over een buitenlandse student. Onthoud dan goed dat een officiële taaltoets bijna altijd een verplichte toelatingseis is voor een Engelstalige studie.
Just a tip for your exam. You often get a question about an international student. Remember well that an official language test is almost always a mandatory admission requirement for an English-taught study program.
Bram: Dat is een goeie. Dus niet alleen een diploma, maar ook die test.
That's a good one. So not just a diploma, but also that test.
Bram: Dus, even op een rijtje: als ik een vraag krijg, moet ik weten dat je voor een Engelstalige studie vaak een speciale taaltoets moet doen. Dat is een belangrijke toelatingseis.
So, to recap: if I get a question, I need to know that for an English-taught study program, you often have to take a special language test. That is an important admission requirement.
Mieke: Precies. En vergeet het verschil in collegegeld niet tussen EU- en niet-EU-studenten. Dat vragen ze ook vaak.
Exactly. And don't forget the difference in tuition fees between EU and non-EU students. They often ask about that too.
