Mieke: Ja, hè? Een groot verschil met zijn vorige plek midden in de stad. Hij twijfelde lang, hoor. Blijven wonen in de stad of toch naar een dorp verhuizen.

Mieke: Precies. Het nadeel is dat het er altijd druk is. Veel verkeer, veel mensen op straat. En de huizen zijn vaak kleiner en duurder. Je betaalt veel voor een klein appartement zonder balkon.
Exactly. The downside is that it's always busy. Lots of traffic, lots of people on the street. And houses are often smaller and more expensive. You pay a lot for a small apartment without a balcony.
Bram: En in een dorp is dat anders? Ik ben opgegroeid in Eindhoven, dat is natuurlijk een stad. Ik ken het dorpsleven niet zo goed.
And in a village, is that different? I grew up in Eindhoven, which is a city, of course. I don't know village life very well.
Mieke: Ja, in een dorp heb je vaak meer ruimte en rust. Mensen hebben vaker een huis met een tuin. Het is er stiller. Ideaal als je kinderen hebt, bijvoorbeeld, omdat die veilig buiten kunnen spelen.

Bram: En hoe zit het met de mensen? Ik hoor weleens dat je in de stad anoniemer bent. Dat lijkt me soms wel lekker, eigenlijk.
And what about the people? I sometimes hear that you're more anonymous in the city. That actually sounds nice sometimes.
Mieke: Ja, dat is een goed punt. In de stad is er meer anonimiteit. Je kent je buren vaak niet zo goed. Sommige mensen vinden dat fijn, die vrijheid. Je kunt doen wat je wilt.
Yes, that's a good point. In the city, there's more anonymity. You often don't know your neighbors very well. Some people like that, that freedom. You can do what you want.
Bram: En in een dorp? Kijkt iedereen dan mee met wat je doet? Haha.
And in a village? Does everyone watch what you do then? Haha.
Mieke: Nou, dat kan soms zo voelen. In een dorp is er vaak een sterkere gemeenschap. Mensen kennen elkaar, groeten elkaar op straat en er zijn veel verenigingen, zoals een voetbalclub. Dat kan fijn en veilig voelen, maar sommige mensen vinden die sociale controle juist benauwend.
Well, it can sometimes feel that way. In a village, there's often a stronger community. People know each other, greet each other on the street, and there are many associations, like a football club. That can feel nice and safe, but some people find that social control stifling.
Bram: Dus het hangt er echt vanaf wat je persoonlijk belangrijk vindt. Ik snap nu wel waarom Yusuf verhuisd is, omdat hij meer rust zocht. Ik weet dat hij de drukte in het centrum echt zat was.
So it really depends on what you personally find important. I understand now why Yusuf moved, because he was looking for more peace and quiet. I know he was really fed up with the hustle and bustle in the city center.
