Bram: Kijk Mieke, dat jongetje daar. Hij huilt een beetje. Zijn moeder troost hem.
Look Mieke, that little boy over there. He's crying a little. His mother is comforting him.
Mieke: Oh ja, ik zie het. Misschien heeft hij net een prik gehad bij de dokter. Kinderen vinden dat niet altijd leuk.
Oh yes, I see it. Maybe he just had an injection at the doctor's. Children don't always like that.
Bram: Een prik, ja. Een vaccinatie. Zeg, zijn die vaccinaties voor kinderen verplicht in Nederland?
An injection, yes. A vaccination. Say, are those vaccinations for children mandatory in the Netherlands?
Mieke: Dat is een goede vraag. En heel belangrijk voor het KNM-examen. Het antwoord is: nee.
That's a good question. And very important for the KNM exam. The answer is: no.
Bram: Huh, echt? Niet verplicht? Ik dacht dat alle kinderen die prikken moesten krijgen.
Huh, really? Not mandatory? I thought all children had to get those shots.
Mieke: Nee, het is niet verplicht. Er is wel een speciaal programma. Dat heet het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma.
No, it's not mandatory. There is a special program, though. It's called the National Immunisation Programme.
Bram: Het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma. Oké. En wat doet dat programma?
The National Immunisation Programme. Okay. And what does that program do?
Mieke: De overheid wil kinderen beschermen. Tegen ernstige kinderziektes. Zoals de mazelen of de bof.
The government wants to protect children. Against serious childhood diseases. Such as measles or mumps.
Bram: Ah, dus de vaccinaties zijn een advies. Geen regel.
Ah, so the vaccinations are advice. Not a rule.
Mieke: Precies. Ouders krijgen een brief thuis. Dat is een oproep voor een vaccinatie. De ouders beslissen zelf.
Exactly. Parents receive a letter at home. That's an invitation for a vaccination. The parents decide themselves.
Bram: En kiezen de meeste ouders voor de vaccinatie?
And do most parents choose vaccination?
Mieke: Ja, de meeste ouders wel. Bijna alle kinderen in Nederland krijgen de vaccinaties. Het is gratis.
Yes, most parents do. Almost all children in the Netherlands receive the vaccinations. It's free.
Bram: Waarom kiezen sommige ouders nee?
Why do some parents choose no?
Mieke: Dat heeft verschillende redenen. Sommige mensen zijn bang voor bijwerkingen. Andere mensen hebben een andere overtuiging.
That has different reasons. Some people are afraid of side effects. Other people have a different conviction.
Bram: En mag een kind dan wel naar school? Zonder vaccinaties?
And is a child allowed to go to school then? Without vaccinations?
Mieke: Ja, dat mag. Scholen mogen een kind niet weigeren. Kinderen hebben recht op onderwijs.
Yes, that's allowed. Schools are not allowed to refuse a child. Children have a right to education.
Bram: Oké, dus even checken. Een 'vaccinatie' en een 'prik', is dat hetzelfde?
Okay, so just to check. A 'vaccination' and a 'shot', are they the same?
Mieke: Ja. 'De prik' is het normale woord. 'De vaccinatie' is het officiële woord. Het doel is hetzelfde: je kind beschermen tegen een kinderziekte.
Yes. 'The shot' is the normal word. 'The vaccination' is the official word. The goal is the same: to protect your child against a childhood disease.
Bram: Duidelijk. En 'verplicht' betekent dat iets moet.
Clear. And 'mandatory' means something must happen.
Mieke: Juist. En vaccinaties zijn dus níet verplicht.
Correct. And so vaccinations are not mandatory.
Mieke: Even een tip voor je examen. Je krijgt vaak een vraag als: 'Vaccinaties voor kinderen zijn verplicht in Nederland.' Je moet dan kiezen: waar of niet waar.
Just a tip for your exam. You often get a question like: 'Vaccinations for children are mandatory in the Netherlands.' You then have to choose: true or false.
Bram: En het antwoord is dus 'niet waar'.
And the answer is 'false'.
Mieke: Precies. Onthoud dat goed. Het is een keuze van de ouders.
Exactly. Remember that well. It's the parents' choice.
Bram: Oké, dus als ik op het examen een vraag krijg... Dan moet ik weten: het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma is een advies. Ouders kiezen zelf. Het is niet verplicht.
