Bram: Pff, ik kom net van de huisarts. Ik heb een beetje hoofdpijn.
Ugh, I just came from the GP. I have a bit of a headache.
Mieke: Oh nee. En, wat zei de dokter?
Oh no. And, what did the doctor say?
Bram: Hij gaf me dit briefje. Het is een recept. Ik moet naar de apotheek.
He gave me this note. It's a prescription. I have to go to the pharmacy.
Mieke: Ah, een recept. Dat is een goed onderwerp voor KNM. Weet je precies wat je moet doen?
Ah, a prescription. That's a good topic for KNM. Do you know exactly what you need to do?
Bram: Haha, ik denk het wel. Maar leg het nog maar eens uit.
Haha, I think so. But explain it again.
Mieke: Oké. Met dit recept ga je dus naar de apotheek.

Bram: Ja, dat is de eerste stap.

Mieke: In de apotheek geef je het recept aan de apothekersassistent.
At the pharmacy, you give the prescription to the pharmacy assistant.
Bram: En dan moet ik wachten?
And then I have to wait?
Mieke: Meestal wel, ja. Een paar minuten. Zij maken de medicijnen voor je klaar.
Usually, yes. A few minutes. They prepare the medicines for you.
Bram: Oké. En dan kan ik de medicijnen ophalen.
Okay. And then I can pick up the medicines.
Mieke: Precies. Je krijgt een doosje. Op het doosje staat een sticker met jouw naam.
Exactly. You get a box. On the box is a sticker with your name.
Bram: Waarom staat mijn naam erop?
Why is my name on it?
Mieke: Omdat die medicijnen speciaal voor jou zijn. Iemand anders mag ze niet gebruiken.
Because those medicines are specially for you. Someone else shouldn't use them.
Bram: Logisch. En wat staat er nog meer op de sticker?
Makes sense. And what else is on the sticker?
Mieke: De naam van het medicijn. En heel belangrijk: de dosering.
The name of the medicine. And very important: the dosage.
Bram: De dosering. Dat is hoeveel ik moet nemen, toch?
The dosage. That's how much I need to take, right?
Mieke: Ja. Bijvoorbeeld: 'twee keer per dag één pil'. Dat is de dosering.
Yes. For example: 'one pill twice a day'. That's the dosage.
Bram: Helder. Maar Mieke, ik kan toch ook een pijnstiller kopen bij de supermarkt?
Understood. But Mieke, I can also buy a painkiller at the supermarket, right?
Mieke: Ja, dat klopt. Dat zijn medicijnen zonder recept. Paracetamol is een voorbeeld.

Mieke: Dat is de bijsluiter. Die moet je ook altijd lezen.
That's the patient information leaflet. You always have to read that too.
Bram: Waarom dan?
Why then?
Mieke: Daar staat belangrijke informatie. Over bijwerkingen bijvoorbeeld.
It contains important information. About side effects, for example.
Bram: Oké, dus de bijsluiter is ook belangrijk. Ik zal het onthouden.
Okay, so the patient information leaflet is important too. I'll remember that.
Bram: Oké, dus de belangrijkste woorden zijn... 'het recept', van de dokter.
Okay, so the most important words are... 'the prescription', from the doctor.
Mieke: Ja. En 'de apotheek', waar je de medicijnen gaat ophalen.
Yes. And 'the pharmacy', where you go to pick up the medicines.
Bram: En 'de dosering'. Hoeveel je moet nemen.
And 'the dosage'. How much you should take.
Mieke: Precies. En vergeet 'de bijsluiter' niet. Het papier met de informatie.
Exactly. And don't forget 'the patient information leaflet'. The paper with the information.
Mieke: Let op voor het KNM-examen. Je ziet vaak een plaatje van een recept.
Pay attention for the KNM exam. You often see a picture of a prescription.
Bram: En wat is dan de vraag?
And what is the question then?
Mieke: De vraag is: 'Wat moet je met dit papier doen?'. Het antwoord is: 'Naar de apotheek gaan'.
The question is: 'What should you do with this paper?'. The answer is: 'Go to the pharmacy'.
Bram: Dus, als ik het goed begrijp: recept van de dokter, naar de apotheek...
So, if I understand correctly: prescription from the doctor, to the pharmacy...
Mieke: Ja...
Yes...
Bram: ...medicijnen ophalen en altijd de bijsluiter lezen voor de juiste dosering.
