Bram: Mieke, wat teken je? Ik zie drie blokjes op je papier.
Mieke, what are you drawing? I see three blocks on your paper.
Mieke: Hoi Bram. Ik maak een schema. Het is voor de les van vandaag.
Hi Bram. I'm making a diagram. It's for today's lesson.
Bram: Een schema? Waarover gaat de les dan?
A diagram? What is the lesson about then?
Mieke: Over het schoolsysteem in Nederland. Na de basisschool.
About the school system in the Netherlands. After primary school.
Mieke: Kijk. Kinderen zijn ongeveer 12 jaar. Dan gaan ze van de basisschool af.
Look. Children are about 12 years old. Then they leave primary school.
Bram: En dan moeten ze een nieuwe school kiezen.
And then they have to choose a new school.
Mieke: Precies. Ze kunnen kiezen uit drie niveaus. Dit zijn de blokjes: vmbo, havo en vwo.
Exactly. They can choose from three levels. These are the blocks: vmbo, havo, and vwo.
Bram: Oké, vmbo, havo, vwo. Ik ben de details alweer vergeten. Wat is het verschil?
Okay, vmbo, havo, vwo. I've already forgotten the details again. What's the difference?
Mieke: Het vmbo duurt vier jaar. Deze school is heel praktisch.
Vmbo lasts four years. This school is very practical.
Bram: En na het vmbo? Wat kun je dan doen?
And after vmbo? What can you do then?
Mieke: Na het vmbo kun je naar het mbo. Dat is een beroepsopleiding.
After vmbo, you can go to mbo. That is a vocational training.
Bram: Oké, dus vmbo en dan mbo. Duidelijk. En de havo?
Okay, so vmbo and then mbo. Clear. And havo?
Mieke: De havo duurt vijf jaar. Na de havo kun je naar het hbo.
Havo lasts five years. After havo, you can go to hbo.
Bram: Vijf jaar. Dat is dus één jaar langer.
Five years. So that's one year longer.
Mieke: Klopt. En dan heb je nog het vwo. Dat is het hoogste niveau.
That's right. And then you also have vwo. That is the highest level.
Bram: En hoe lang duurt dat? Zes jaar?
And how long does that last? Six years?
Mieke: Haha, goed geraden. Ja, zes jaar. Het vwo is heel theoretisch.
Haha, good guess. Yes, six years. Vwo is very theoretical.
Bram: Dus met een vwo-diploma ga je naar de universiteit.
So with a vwo diploma, you go to university.
Mieke: Precies. Met een vwo-diploma kun je naar de universiteit.

Bram: Echt, ik wist dit niet meer zo precies. Best beschamend eigenlijk.
Really, I didn't remember this so precisely anymore. Quite embarrassing actually.
Mieke: Geeft niks. In Nederland moeten alle kinderen naar school. Dat is de leerplicht.
No worries. In the Netherlands, all children must go to school. That is compulsory education.
Bram: Je zei: vmbo is meer `praktisch` en vwo is `theoretisch`. Wat bedoel je daarmee?
You said: vmbo is more `practical` and vwo is `theoretical`. What do you mean by that?
Mieke: Goede vraag. `Praktisch` betekent dat je leert door dingen te doen. Met je handen werken.
Good question. `Practical` means you learn by doing things. Working with your hands.
Bram: Oké. En `theoretisch`?
Okay. And `theoretical`?
Mieke: `Theoretisch` betekent dat je vooral leert uit boeken. Veel lezen en studeren.
`Theoretical` means you mainly learn from books. Lots of reading and studying.
Mieke: Even een tip voor het KNM-examen. Je ziet vaak een schema van het schoolsysteem.
Just a tip for the KNM exam. You often see a diagram of the school system.
Bram: Oh ja?
Oh really?
Mieke: Ja. Ze vragen dan: "Welke opleiding kun je doen na de havo?" Je moet dan het goede antwoord kiezen.
Yes. They then ask: "Which education can you pursue after havo?" You then have to choose the correct answer.
Bram: En dat is natuurlijk het hbo.
And that is, of course, hbo.
Mieke: Precies.
Exactly.
Bram: Oké, dus even op een rijtje. Voor het examen moet ik weten: na het vmbo kun je naar het mbo.
Okay, so just to recap. For the exam, I need to know: after vmbo, you can go to mbo.
Mieke: Correct.
Correct.
Bram: Na de havo kun je naar het hbo. En na het vwo kun je naar de universiteit.
