Bram: Mieke, ik kijk naar mijn nieuwe contract. Mijn werkgever vraagt om mijn BSN. Ik weet natuurlijk dat ik dat moet geven. Maar waarom is dat nummer zo belangrijk?
Mieke, I'm looking at my new contract. My employer is asking for my BSN. I know, of course, that I have to provide it. But why is that number so important?
Mieke: Ah, een goede vraag, Bram. Het BSN, of burgerservicenummer. Dat is de sleutel tot bijna alles in Nederland.
Ah, a good question, Bram. The BSN, or citizen service number. That is the key to almost everything in the Netherlands.
Bram: De sleutel? Dat klinkt wel heel belangrijk.
The key? That sounds very important.
Mieke: Dat is het ook. Laten we bij het begin beginnen. BSN staat voor burgerservicenummer.
It is. Let's start at the beginning. BSN stands for citizen service number.
Bram: Een lang woord. Ik zeg gewoon BSN.
A long word. I'll just say BSN.
Mieke: Ja, dat doet iedereen. Elk persoon in Nederland heeft een eigen BSN.
Yes, everyone does. Every person in the Netherlands has their own BSN.

So I have a BSN, you have a BSN, everyone has a BSN.
Mieke: Precies. En jouw nummer is uniek. Alleen voor jou.
Exactly. And your number is unique. Only for you.
Bram: En waar komt dat nummer vandaan?
And where does that number come from?
Mieke: Je krijgt het nummer van de overheid. Dat gebeurt bij je inschrijving in de gemeente.
You get the number from the government. That happens when you register with the municipality.
Bram: Dus de eerste stap is altijd de inschrijving bij de gemeente.
So the first step is always registration with the municipality.
Mieke: Ja. Die stap is verplicht. Dan krijg je automatisch een BSN.
Yes. That step is mandatory. Then you automatically receive a BSN.
Bram: Oké. En jij zei dat mijn werkgever het nodig heeft.
Okay. And you said my employer needs it.
Mieke: Klopt. De werkgever moet weten wie jij bent. Dat is voor de belasting.
That's right. The employer needs to know who you are. That's for taxes.
Bram: Ah, voor de Belastingdienst. Logisch. En zijn er nog andere situaties?
Ah, for the Tax Authorities. Logical. And are there any other situations?
Mieke: Jazeker. Denk aan de zorg. Je hebt een zorgverzekering nodig in Nederland.
Certainly. Think of healthcare. You need health insurance in the Netherlands.
Bram: Ja, die is ook verplicht.
Yes, that is also mandatory.
Mieke: Voor de aanvraag van je zorgverzekering heb je je BSN nodig.
For the application of your health insurance, you need your BSN.
Bram: En als ik naar de dokter ga? Of naar het ziekenhuis?
And if I go to the doctor? Or to the hospital?
Mieke: Ja, ook dan. Ze vragen altijd om je identiteitsbewijs met je BSN.

Bram: Wauw. Dus voor werk, belasting, en alle zorg.
Wow. So for work, taxes, and all healthcare.
Mieke: Inderdaad. Ook voor een bankrekening openen. Of voor een uitkering van het UWV.

So it's really a central number. Where do I find it again?
Mieke: Het staat op je paspoort. Of op je ID-kaart. En op je rijbewijs.
It's on your passport. Or on your ID card. And on your driver's license.
Bram: Handig. Dan hoef ik het niet te onthouden.
Handy. Then I don't have to remember it.
Mieke: Voor het examen zijn een paar woorden belangrijk. Natuurlijk het burgerservicenummer.
For the exam, a few words are important. Of course, the citizen service number.
Bram: En dat het uniek is.
And that it's unique.
Mieke: Precies. En dat het verplicht is voor je werkgever en je zorgverzekering.

Mieke: Een tip. Op het examen zie je vaak een vraag: 'Je gaat voor het eerst werken in Nederland. Wat heeft je werkgever van jou nodig?'. Het juiste antwoord is dan altijd: het BSN.
A tip. On the exam, you often see a question: 'You're going to work in the Netherlands for the first time. What does your employer need from you?'. The correct answer is always: the BSN.
Bram: Oké, dus als ik een vraag zie over een officiële instantie...
Okay, so if I see a question about an official institution...
Bram: ...zoals de gemeente, het ziekenhuis, of de Belastingdienst, dan is het BSN belangrijk.
