Bram: Hé Mieke, ik zie buiten kinderen spelen. Het is tien uur 's ochtends.
Hey Mieke, I see children playing outside. It's ten o'clock in the morning.

Bram: Moeten zij niet naar school?
Shouldn't they be at school?

Mieke: Jawel. In Nederland moeten bijna alle kinderen naar school. Dat is een goede vraag voor KNM.
Yes, they should. In the Netherlands, almost all children have to go to school. That's a good question for KNM.

Mieke: We hebben in Nederland de leerplicht.
In the Netherlands, we have compulsory education.

Bram: De leerplicht? Wat is dat precies?
Compulsory education? What exactly is that?

Mieke: Dat betekent dat onderwijs verplicht is. Het staat in de wet.
That means education is compulsory. It's in the law.

Bram: Ah, oké. Dus alle kinderen moeten naar school.
Ah, okay. So all children have to go to school.

Mieke: Ja, precies. Vanaf een bepaalde leeftijd.
Yes, exactly. From a certain age.

Bram: En welke leeftijd is dat? Vanaf vier jaar?
And what age is that? From four years old?

Mieke: Nee, dat denken veel mensen. Kinderen mogen naar school vanaf vier jaar.
No, many people think that. Children are allowed to go to school from four years old.

Mieke: Maar de leerplicht start later. School is verplicht vanaf vijf jaar.
But compulsory education starts later. School is compulsory from five years old.

Bram: Oh, vanaf vijf jaar! Dat wist ik niet meer. En tot wanneer duurt dat?
Oh, from five years old! I didn't remember that. And until when does that last?

Compulsory education is until the age of sixteen.

Okay, so from five to sixteen years old. That's quite long.

Mieke: Klopt.
That's right. Sometimes young people continue with school after that. But it's no longer compulsory.

And what happens if a child doesn't go to school?

Mieke: Dan is er een probleem. De school praat dan met de ouders.
Then there's a problem. The school then talks to the parents.

Mieke: Helpt dat niet? Dan komt er een speciaal persoon.
If that doesn't help? Then a special person comes.

Bram: Wie dan?
Who then?

Mieke: De leerplichtambtenaar. Die werkt voor de gemeente.
The truancy officer. They work for the municipality.

Bram: Een leerplichtambtenaar... Dat klinkt streng.
A truancy officer... That sounds strict.

Mieke: Dat kan het zijn. Soms krijgen de ouders een waarschuwing. Of zelfs een boete.
It can be. Sometimes the parents get a warning. Or even a fine.

Bram: Wow, een boete. Dat is serieus.
Wow, a fine. That's serious.

Mieke: Ja.
Yes. The government considers school very important for every child.

I understand that. So those words are important: 'compulsory education' and 'obligatory'.

Mieke: Ja. 'Leerplicht' is de regel, de wet. En 'verplicht' betekent dat je iets moet doen.
Yes. 'Compulsory education' is the rule, the law. And 'obligatory' means that you have to do something.

Bram: En de 'leerplichtambtenaar' controleert die wet.
And the 'truancy officer' checks that law.

Mieke: Precies. Die drie woorden moet je onthouden.
Exactly. You have to remember those three words.

Mieke: Let op voor je examen. Ze vragen vaak naar de leeftijd.
Pay attention for your exam. They often ask about the age.

Mieke: Onthoud goed: de leerplicht in Nederland is vanaf vijf jaar. Niet vier en niet zes.
Remember well: compulsory education in the Netherlands is from five years old. Not four and not six.

Okay, so if I see a question on the exam...

Then the answer is: children must go to school from the age of five.

Mieke: Helemaal juist.
Absolutely correct. That is the most important thing to know about compulsory education.

Bram: Top, die zit in mijn hoofd. Bedankt!
Great, I've got that. Thanks!

Mieke: Graag gedaan. Succes met leren en tot morgen!
You're welcome. Good luck with studying and see you tomorrow!
