Bram: Goedemiddag, Mieke.
Good afternoon, Mieke.
Mieke: Dag Bram. Wil je koffie? De koffie is nog warm.
Hello Bram. Do you want coffee? The coffee is still warm.
Bram: Ja, lekker.
Yes, lovely.
Mieke: Mijn vriend Yusuf was hier vanochtend. We gingen samen koffie drinken.
My friend Yusuf was here this morning. We went to drink coffee together.
Bram: Oh, gezellig.
Oh, nice.
Mieke: Ja. We hadden een afspraak om tien uur. Hij was er precies om tien uur.
Yes. We had an appointment at ten o'clock. He was there exactly at ten o'clock.
Bram: Precies op tijd. Dat is wel heel Nederlands, haha. Ik vind dat soms best lastig.
Exactly on time. That's very Dutch, haha. I sometimes find that quite difficult.
Mieke: Ja, dat klopt. Op tijd komen is heel belangrijk in Nederland. Voor werk, maar ook voor privé-afspraken.
Yes, that's right. Being on time is very important in the Netherlands. For work, but also for private appointments.
Why is that so important? In some countries, it's more normal to arrive later.
Mieke: Nederlanders plannen heel veel. Iedereen heeft een drukke agenda.
Dutch people plan a lot. Everyone has a busy schedule.
Bram: Ja, mijn agenda staat ook altijd vol. Maandag werk, dinsdag sporten, woensdag een afspraak...
Yes, my schedule is always full too. Monday work, Tuesday exercise, Wednesday an appointment...
Mieke: Precies. We maken een afspraak voor werk. Of voor de tandarts. Of gewoon voor koffie.
Exactly. We make an appointment for work. Or for the dentist. Or just for coffee.
And you then write that appointment in your schedule.
Mieke: Juist.
Exactly. And if you then arrive late, that's not very polite.
Bram: Waarom niet?
Why not?
The other person then has to wait for you. That's a waste of time.
Bram: Ah ja. Wachten is niet leuk. Ik vind wachten zelf ook vreselijk.
Ah yes. Waiting isn't fun. I find waiting terrible myself too.
Mieke: Niemand vindt wachten leuk.
Nobody likes waiting. So we always try to be on time. It's a form of respect.
Bram: En voor een officiële afspraak? Bij de gemeente of het UWV?
And for an official appointment? At the municipality or the UWV?
Mieke: Dan is het extra belangrijk. Kom absoluut niet te laat. Dan mis je misschien je afspraak.
Then it's extra important. Absolutely do not be late. Then you might miss your appointment.
Bram: Oh, echt? Moet je dan een nieuwe afspraak plannen?
Oh, really? Do you have to schedule a new appointment then?
Mieke: Ja, vaak wel. Dat is heel onhandig.
Yes, often. That's very inconvenient.
Bram: En te vroeg komen? Is een kwartier van tevoren goed?
And arriving too early? Is fifteen minutes in advance good?
Mieke: Een kwartier is wel erg vroeg. Vijf minuten van tevoren is perfect. Of precies op tijd.
Fifteen minutes is very early. Five minutes in advance is perfect. Or exactly on time.
Okay. So not too late and not too early. Just... on time.
Mieke: Haha, ja. Gewoon op tijd.
Haha, yes. Just on time.
So the words 'on time' and 'too late' are very important for this topic.
Mieke: Ja. En ook 'de afspraak' en 'de agenda'. Die horen er echt bij.
Yes. And also 'the appointment' and 'the calendar'. They really go with it.
And the difference between 'exactly' and 'approximately'? I sometimes still find that difficult.
Mieke: 'Precies tien uur' is exact 10:00 uur. 'Ongeveer tien uur' is een beetje ervoor of erna. Bijvoorbeeld 09:55 of 10:05.
'Exactly ten o'clock' is exactly 10:00. 'Approximately ten o'clock' is a little before or after. For example, 09:55 or 10:05.
Bram: Duidelijk.
Clear. But an official appointment in your calendar is therefore always 'exactly'.
Mieke: Ja, altijd.
Yes, always.
A tip for your KNM exam. You often get a question about an appointment.
Bram: Oké, en dan?
Okay, and then?
For example, it says: 'You have an appointment with the doctor at 2:00 PM. What is correct?' The correct answer is always: 'You are there at 2:00 PM'.
Okay, so to summarize. If I see a question on the exam about an appointment...
Mieke: Ja?
Yes?
...then the answer is: arrive at the agreed time. Not fifteen minutes later. And not much earlier either.
Mieke: Helemaal goed. Dat is het belangrijkste om te onthouden.
Absolutely correct. That is the most important thing to remember.
Bram: Top. Dankjewel weer!
Great. Thanks again! Now I'm going to plan my calendar for tomorrow.
Mieke: Haha, goed zo. Tot morgen!
Haha, alright then. See you tomorrow!
