So Mieke, it's nice and quiet here in the library.

Mieke: Ja, ideaal om even te studeren. Heb je het boek?
Yes, ideal for studying for a bit. Do you have the book?

Bram: Jazeker, kijk. 'De Grondwet'. Ik heb dit boek lang niet gezien.
Certainly, look. 'The Constitution'. I haven't seen this book in a long time.

Mieke: Haha, dat geloof ik. Het is ook geen spannend boek.
Haha, I believe it. It's not an exciting book either.

It is a very thick book though. What exactly is the Constitution?

The Constitution is the most important law in the Netherlands. All other laws must conform to it.

Bram: Oké. En we kijken naar Artikel 1?
Okay. And we're looking at Article 1?

Mieke: Ja, we beginnen bij het begin. Artikel 1 is de basis van alles.
Yes, we'll start at the beginning. Article 1 is the basis of everything.

Mieke: Pak het boek maar. Zoek Artikel 1 even op.
Go ahead and take the book. Look up Article 1 for a moment.

Bram: Moment... hier. 'Allen die zich in Nederland bevinden, worden in gelijke gevallen gelijk behandeld'.
Moment... here. 'All persons who are in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal circumstances'.

Mieke: Heel goed. En wat staat er daarna?
Very good. And what does it say next?

Bram: Eh... 'Discriminatie wegens godsdienst, levensovertuiging, politieke gezindheid, ras, geslacht of op welke grond dan ook, is niet toegestaan'.
Uh... 'Discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief, political opinion, race, sex or on any other ground whatsoever shall not be permitted'.

Mieke: Precies. Dat is een hele belangrijke zin. Wat betekent het voor jou?
Exactly. That's a very important sentence. What does it mean to you?

Well, that you have to treat everyone the same. No discrimination.

Mieke: Ja, dat is de kern. De wet is voor iedereen gelijk. Kun je een voorbeeld geven?
Yes, that's the core. The law is the same for everyone. Can you give an example?

A man and a woman apply for a job. They are both good. You can't choose the man just because he is a man.

Mieke: Perfect voorbeeld. Dat is discriminatie op basis van geslacht. En dat is verboden.
Perfect example. That is discrimination based on sex. And that is forbidden.

And it applies to everyone in the Netherlands? Even tourists?

Iedereen.
Yes, the text says: 'All persons who are in the Netherlands'. So not just Dutch people. Everyone.

Bram: Wauw, dat is wel goed eigenlijk. Dat wist ik niet zo precies meer.
Wow, that's actually good. I didn't remember that exactly.

Gelijkheid.
It is the basis of our society. Equality.

So it doesn't matter what your faith is. Or which political party you vote for.

No, that doesn't matter to the law. You have the same rights and obligations.

Bram: Dus er is geen 'baas' geloof? Of een 'beste' politieke overtuiging?
So there is no 'dominant' faith? Or a 'best' political conviction?

Mieke: Nee, absoluut niet. De overheid is neutraal. Alle geloven en overtuigingen zijn gelijkwaardig.
No, absolutely not. The government is neutral. All faiths and convictions are equal.

The article states 'religion' and 'philosophy of life'. Is that the same?

No, not exactly. A religion is a faith. Think of Christianity, Islam, Judaism.

Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En een levensovertuiging?
Okay, clear. And a philosophy of life?

That is how you think about life. Without a god. For example, humanism.

Bram: Ah!
Ah! So you are also protected if you don't have a faith.

Mieke: Precies. De wet beschermt iedereen. Met of zonder geloof.
Exactly. The law protects everyone. With or without faith.

For the KNM exam, this is very important. Remember this well.

You often get a question with the text of Article 1. The question is then: 'What is the most important value in this article?'

Mieke: Het antwoord is dan altijd 'gelijkheid'. Of 'discriminatie is verboden'.
The answer is always 'equality'. Or 'discrimination is forbidden'.

Bram: Oké, even samenvatten.
Okay, let's summarize. Article 1 of the Constitution is the most important law.

Bram: Het betekent: iedereen in Nederland wordt gelijk behandeld.
It means: everyone in the Netherlands is treated equally.

Mieke: En wat mag absoluut niet?
And what is absolutely not allowed?

Bram: Discriminatie. Dat is verboden.
Discrimination. That is forbidden.

Mieke: Helemaal goed. Dat moet je onthouden voor je examen.
Exactly right. You must remember that for your exam.

Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt Mieke.
Clear. Thanks Mieke. I already feel like a better citizen, haha.

Mieke: Graag gedaan. En nu... koffie?
You're welcome. And now... coffee?

Bram: Zeker! Tot de volgende les.
Sure! See you next lesson.

Mieke: Tot morgen!
See you tomorrow!
