Bram: Pff, Mieke. Ik heb een beetje hoofdpijn vandaag.
Pff, Mieke. I have a bit of a headache today.

Mieke: Oh nee, Bram. Misschien moet je de huisarts bellen.
Oh no, Bram. Maybe you should call the GP.

Bram: Ja, misschien wel. Hoe doe je dat ook alweer? Haha.
Yes, maybe. How do you do that again? Haha.

Mieke: Kom op. We oefenen even.
Come on. Let's practice for a bit. That's an important topic for KNM: making an appointment.

Mieke: Oké, ik ben de assistent. Jij belt de praktijk. De telefoon gaat... tring tring.
Okay, I'm the assistant. You call the practice. The phone rings... tring tring.

Bram: Haha, oké. Ik begin.
Haha, okay. I'll start.

Good morning, this is Doctor De Wit's practice. You're speaking with the assistant. How can I help you?

Bram: Goedemorgen. Ik wil graag een afspraak maken.
Good morning. I'd like to make an appointment.

Mieke: Natuurlijk. Wat is uw naam?
Of course. What is your name?

Bram: Mijn naam is Bram de Vries.
My name is Bram de Vries.

Mieke: En wat is uw geboortedatum?
And what is your date of birth?

Bram: Tien mei, negentien-zesentachtig.
May tenth, nineteen eighty-six.

Mieke: Dank u. Ik zie u in ons systeem. Wat is de reden voor de afspraak? Wat is uw klacht?
Thank you. I see you in our system. What is the reason for the appointment? What is your complaint?

I've had a headache for two days and I don't feel well. I also have a bit of a fever.

Mieke: Oké. Ik begrijp het. Ik kijk even in de agenda. Wanneer kunt u komen?
Okay. I understand. I'll check the schedule. When can you come?

Bram: Ik kan morgen. Is dat mogelijk?
I can come tomorrow. Is that possible?

Mieke: Ja, morgen kan. Wilt u in de ochtend of in de middag komen?
Yes, tomorrow is possible. Would you like to come in the morning or in the afternoon?

The morning is best for me.

Mieke: Even kijken... Ik heb een tijdstip om tien uur. Schikt dat voor u?
Let me see... I have an appointment time at ten o'clock. Does that suit you?

Bram: Ja, tien uur is perfect.
Yes, ten o'clock is perfect.

Mieke: Mooi.
Good. Then the appointment is in the diary. Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock with doctor De Wit.

Bram: Super, hartelijk dank.
Great, thank you very much.

Mieke: Graag gedaan. Beterschap en tot morgen.
You're welcome. Get well soon and see you tomorrow.

Well, that went well. That word, 'schikt'. So that means: is it a good time for me?

Mieke: Ja, precies. 'Schikt het u?' of 'Past het in uw agenda?'. De assistent vraagt naar een goed tijdstip.
Yes, exactly. 'Does it suit you?' or 'Does it fit into your schedule?'. The assistant asks for a suitable time.

And so I make the appointment with the assistant, not directly with the doctor.

Mieke: Klopt.
That's right. The assistant manages the diary and helps you. That is important to know.

This is important for your exam. You often get a role-play. The examiner is then the assistant. Listen carefully to the questions. Clearly state your name and what your complaint is.

Okay, so if I need to make an appointment... I say: 'I want to make an appointment'. Then I give my name. And I say why I'm calling.

Mieke: Helemaal goed.
Absolutely right. And then you choose a time that suits. For example, in the morning or afternoon.

Bram: Duidelijk. Nu ga ik een echte paracetamol nemen. Tot morgen!
Understood. Now I'm going to take a real paracetamol. See you tomorrow!

Mieke: Haha, goed idee. Tot morgen, Bram!
Haha, good idea. See you tomorrow, Bram!
