Look, there she is. The mayor. She's leading the meeting quite strictly, don't you think?
Mieke: Zeker. Dat is ook haar taak. Zij is de voorzitter van de gemeenteraad.

Bram: De openbare orde... dus dat de stad rustig en veilig is?

Mieke: Precies. Als er bijvoorbeeld een grote demonstratie is, of een festival, dan is de burgemeester verantwoordelijk voor de veiligheid. Hij of zij is het hoofd van de politie en de brandweer in de gemeente.

Bram: Oké, dat is een serieuze baan. Ik zie de burgemeester ook wel eens bij officiële dingen, met zo'n grote zilveren ketting om.

Bram: Wacht, dus 'benoemen' en 'kiezen' zijn echt twee verschillende dingen. Wat is het precieze verschil voor het examen?
Wait, so 'appoint' and 'elect' are really two different things. What is the precise difference for the exam?
Mieke: Goed dat je dat vraagt. 'Kiezen' doe je zelf, als burger, met een stembiljet. 'Benoemen' betekent dat een hogere autoriteit, zoals de regering of de Koning, iemand een functie geeft. En die ketting heet dus de 'ambtsketen'. Die drie woorden moet je kennen.
Good that you ask that. 'Electing' you do yourself, as a citizen, with a ballot paper. 'Appointing' means that a higher authority, such as the government or the King, gives someone a position. And that chain is called the 'chain of office'. You need to know those three words.

Pay attention, for the KNM exam this is a classic question. They ask: 'How does a mayor get his or her position?' Then there are options like 'elected by the residents' or 'appointed by the King'.
Mieke: Het juiste antwoord is dus altijd iets met benoemen. Onthoud dat goed.
