Look, there she is. The mayor. She's leading the meeting quite strictly, don't you think? Mieke: Zeker. Dat is ook haar taak. Zij is de voorzitter van de gemeenteraad. Certainly. That's also her job. She is the chair of the municipal council. Yes, I understand that. But I was wondering, when are the next elections for the mayor actually? I can't remember ever voting for her. Haha, that's right. You can't actually vote for a mayor in the Netherlands. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? Isn't the mayor elected? I thought we elected everything in a democracy. Mieke: Bijna alles. We kiezen de gemeenteraad, de Provinciale Staten, de Tweede Kamer... Maar de burgemeester wordt benoemd. Almost everything. We elect the municipal council, the Provincial States, the House of Representatives... But the mayor is appointed. Bram: Benoemd? Door wie dan? Appointed? By whom then? Officially by the King, for a period of six years. The municipal council can say what type of mayor they want and they participate in the discussion, but the final decision lies higher up. Oh, I really didn't remember that. How strange, actually. What exactly does a mayor do, besides being chair? A very important task of the mayor is the responsibility for public order and safety in the municipality. Public order... so that the city is calm and safe? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. For example, if there's a large demonstration or a festival, the mayor is responsible for safety. He or she is the head of the police and fire department in the municipality. Okay, that's a serious job. I also sometimes see the mayor at official events, wearing such a large silver chain. Yes, that's the ceremonial chain of office. The mayor wears that on special occasions. For example, when she gives an important speech, or at the reception of the King. Bram: Aha. Aha. And so she is also the chair of the municipal executive (college of mayor and aldermen), right? I did remember that. Mieke: Heel goed! Very good! Yes, she is chair of the municipal council and of the municipal executive (college of B and W). So she is a very important person in the municipality. Bram: Maar dus niet gekozen. Dat vind ik toch wel apart. But not elected. I still find that quite peculiar. The idea behind it is that the mayor should stand above political parties. Neutral, for all residents of the municipality. Wait, so 'appoint' and 'elect' are really two different things. What is the precise difference for the exam? Good that you ask that. 'Electing' you do yourself, as a citizen, with a ballot paper. 'Appointing' means that a higher authority, such as the government or the King, gives someone a position. And that chain is called the 'chain of office'. You need to know those three words. Bram: Oké, duidelijk. Benoemen, niet kiezen. En de ambtsketen. Okay, clear. Appointed, not elected. And the ceremonial chain. Pay attention, for the KNM exam this is a classic question. They ask: 'How does a mayor get his or her position?' Then there are options like 'elected by the residents' or 'appointed by the King'. Mieke: Het juiste antwoord is dus altijd iets met benoemen. Onthoud dat goed. So the correct answer is always something with appointment. Remember that well. Okay, so if I get the question, I need to remember: a mayor is not elected, but appointed. And the most important task is to ensure public order and safety. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. If you know that, you're all set for this topic on the exam. Bram: Nou, weer wat geleerd over mijn eigen land, haha. Zullen we gaan? Well, learned something new about my own country again, haha. Shall we go? Mieke: Ja, is goed. Tot de volgende keer! Yes, okay. Until next time!

Zeg, ik moest net even boodschappen doen voor mijn buurvrouw, mevrouw De Wit. Ze is al wat ouder, weet je wel. Hi Mieke. Listen, I just had to do some groceries for my neighbor, Mrs. De Wit. She's a bit older, you know. Mieke: Oh, wat goed van je, Bram. Is alles in orde met haar? Oh, that's good of you, Bram. Is everything alright with her? She's doing okay, but I saw a brochure on her table about a 'hospice'. I don't know exactly what that is. Is that a kind of hospital? No, that's a good question. A hospice is not a hospital. In a hospital, they try to make you better. In a hospice, that is no longer the goal. Bram: Huh? Wat is het doel dan wel? Huh? What is the goal then? A hospice is a place for people who are in the final phase of their life, the terminal phase. The care they receive there is called palliative care. Bram: Palliatieve zorg... Dat klinkt ingewikkeld. Wat betekent dat? Palliative care... That sounds complicated. What does that mean? That means the care is focused on comfort. So: no pain, feeling as comfortable as possible, and receiving good guidance. It's no longer about healing, but about the quality of life in the final period. Okay, I get it. So if you know you're going to die. But why wouldn't you just want to be at home then? Many people want that too. But sometimes it's not possible. The care is too heavy for the family, or special medical help is needed that is difficult to provide at home. Yes, that's true. A colleague's husband really wanted to stay at home, but in the end, it really wasn't possible anymore. He then had to go to a nursing home. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. A hospice is an alternative then. It's often more homely than a nursing home or hospital. There is a lot of peace and personal attention. Bram: En wie werken daar dan? Alleen maar artsen en verpleegkundigen? And who works there then? Only doctors and nurses? They work there too, but what makes a hospice very special is that a tremendous number of volunteers work there. They help with cooking, talk with the residents, or just 'be there'. Wow, that's quite special. So it's really focused on a good farewell, for the person themselves and for the family? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. The family also receives guidance and can visit as often as they want. It's a place to say goodbye in a peaceful way. Okay, so those two words you mentioned: 'palliative care' and 'terminal phase'. So those are important? Yes, very important to understand the concept. The terminal phase is the final phase of life. And palliative care is the care you receive then, focused on comfort. And also remember the word 'volunteer', they are crucial in a hospice. Bram: Duidelijk. Vrijwilligers zijn dus echt de kern. Understood. So volunteers are really the core. Pay attention for your exam: they often ask what the function of a hospice is. The correct answer is always something about care in the final phase of life, when dying at home is not possible. It is not a hospital. Okay, so if I get a question, I need to remember: a hospice is a home-like place for terminally ill people. The goal is peace and a dignified farewell, with the help of many volunteers. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That's the core you need to know for KNM. Bram: Bedankt voor de uitleg. Weer wat geleerd over mijn eigen land, haha. Thanks for the explanation. Learned something new about my own country again, haha. Mieke: Graag gedaan, Bram. Tot de volgende keer! You're welcome, Bram. Until next time!

Phew, it's so busy here at the municipality. This reminds me of when I moved house. I had to wait here too. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. And it's super important that you register that move. Do you actually still know exactly how that works, such a registration? Uh, I know I had to register my new address. But the details... they've slipped my mind a bit, haha. Haha, I thought so. Look, if you move, you are legally obliged to register your new address with the municipality. The municipality where you're going to live, right. Not your old one. Oh yes, that makes sense. And why is that so important? Because then they know where my mail should go? Mieke: Dat is één reden, ja. That's one reason, yes. But it's broader. The government needs to know where you live. Your address is in the BRP, the Personal Records Database. All important mail, for example from the Tax Authorities or for elections, goes to that address. The BRP... that sounds very official. Is that just a big database with everyone in it? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It is the central administration with the data of all residents of the Netherlands. If your address there is incorrect, that can cause serious problems. Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En wanneer moet je dat doen? Meteen op de dag van de verhuizing? Okay, understood. And when do you have to do that? Immediately on the day of the move? You have a bit of time. You can register it up to four weeks before your move, and up to five days after. Bram: Vijf dagen erna. Five days after. That's not very long. What happens if you are late with registering it? Then the municipality can give you a fine. And that can be quite high, sometimes more than 300 euros. Wow, that's serious. That's an expensive mistake. So, register your move on time. And what do you need for such a registration? Mieke: Wat denk je? Iets wat bewijst wie je bent. What do you think? Something that proves who you are. Bram: Een identiteitsbewijs? Mijn paspoort of ID-kaart? An identity document? My passport or ID card? Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. You need a valid identity document. And often also proof that you are allowed to live at the new address, such as a rental contract. And do you always have to come here to the city hall, stand in line? No, fortunately not always. Nowadays, you can often also register the move online with your DigiD. That is much easier and faster. Bram: Ah, dat is handig. Dat scheelt weer een tripje hiernaartoe. Ah, that's convenient. That saves another trip here. We just talked about the BRP. That's an important abbreviation to know. It stands for Basisregistratie Personen. That is the official name for the municipality's administration. Bram: Basisregistratie Personen. Personal Records Database. Okay. And the word 'doorgeven', does that just mean 'to report' or 'to inform'? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. You pass on the information to an official body, the municipality in this case. You report your new address. Just a tip for your exam: remember that deadline well. They often ask a question like: 'When do you have to report your relocation?' The correct answer is then something like 'within five days after the relocation'. Okay, so no later than five days after. I'll remember that. So, just to recap for the exam... If I move, I have to report my new address to the new municipality. That can be done online or at the counter. I'll bring my ID and do it within five days after the move. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. And don't forget that you can get a fine if you're late. If you know that, you can answer the questions about it. Alright, we're done here. Good luck with studying! Bram: Ja, tot de volgende keer. Doei! Yes, until next time. Bye!

Zo gefocust. Look at that woman there, on her laptop. So focused. A friend of mine also just started his own business. He now calls himself a 'ZZP'er'. I wonder how that actually works. Mieke: Ah, leuk! Ah, nice! The first official step is always the same: you have to register your business. Bram: Inschrijven? Waar dan? Bij de gemeente of zo? Register? Where then? With the municipality or something? No, with the Chamber of Commerce. We call that the KvK. You've probably seen that abbreviation before. Bram: Oh ja, de KvK. Natuurlijk. Maar waarom moet dat eigenlijk? Is het verplicht? Oh yes, the KvK. Of course. But why is that necessary? Is it mandatory? Yes, it's mandatory for almost every entrepreneur. The KvK maintains a register of all businesses in the Netherlands. This way, the government, but also other companies, know that your business officially exists. That inspires confidence. Okay, that sounds logical. So you've made an appointment, and then what? What do you bring? You make an appointment online, yes. You then have to come in person. The most important thing you need to bring is a valid proof of identity. So a passport or a Dutch ID card. And then you sit there and say: 'Hello, I want to start a business'? Haha, pretty much. That person asks you a few questions. For example, what kind of work you're going to do, what the name of your company will be, and you choose a legal structure. Bram: Een rechts... wat? A legal... what? Mieke: Een rechtsvorm. A legal structure. That is the legal form of your company. Most people who start alone become a ZZP'er. And they almost always choose the legal structure 'sole proprietorship'. ZZP'er, I know that one: Self-employed Without Personnel. And sole proprietorship also sounds logical if you're alone. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. I've helped many former students who started their own business after their integration course. One as a hairdresser, another as a programmer. They all registered with the KvK. Bram: En als je bent ingeschreven? Wat is de volgende stap? And once you're registered? What's the next step? Then you immediately receive your KvK number. That's a unique number for your business. The KvK also immediately passes your details on to the Tax Authorities. Bram: Ah, de Belastingdienst. Die weten je altijd te vinden, haha. Ah, the Tax Authorities. They always know how to find you, haha. Haha, yes. From them, you then receive a VAT number. With your KvK number and VAT number, you can officially start working for a client and send a correct invoice. Bram: Is het veel werk, zo'n inschrijving? Is it a lot of work, such a registration? No, it's not too bad. The appointment itself often doesn't take that long. But it is a very important moment. You have then officially established your own business! That's pretty cool actually. And what's the advantage for the client, that you have a KvK number? A client can then see that you are an official, registered business. It's professional and reliable. They know they're working with a real entrepreneur. Wait a minute, you just said 'ondernemer' and 'ZZP'er'. Is that exactly the same? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. A ZZP'er is an entrepreneur. 'Ondernemer' is the general word. A 'ZZP'er' is a special kind of entrepreneur: one without staff. And the legal form usually associated with that is the 'sole proprietorship'. Okay, clear. Entrepreneur is the large group, ZZP'er is the specialist who works alone. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. What's important to remember for your exam: if you get a question about the first step to starting a business, the answer is always: registering with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK). Okay, so I need to remember: if I get a question about starting as a ZZP'er, the very first and most important step is registration with the KvK. Only then can you work for a client and send an invoice. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Dat is de correcte en officiële volgorde. Absolutely correct. That is the correct and official order. Bram: Super interessant. Super interesting. I've learned something new about my own country. Thank you, Mieke. Mieke: Graag gedaan. You're welcome. And to everyone listening: good luck with your studies and see you tomorrow!

Phew, Mieke. When you see these photos… what an impressive exhibition. It's really intense to see. Yes, it certainly is. And that's why it's so important that we're here. This is a very important part of Dutch history. I get it. But why is the Holocaust specifically such a big topic for the KNM exam? I mean, it's terrible, but more things happened, didn't they? That's a good question. That's because the lessons we learn from this are the basis for many of our current values. Okay, explain. Because I must have learned that in school once, but it's faded a bit, haha. Mieke: Nou, kijk. Well, look. The Holocaust took place during the Second World War. In that period, Jewish people, but also other groups, were systematically persecuted and murdered. And that also happened here, in the Netherlands. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. More than 100,000 Jewish Dutch people were murdered. The freedom we now take for granted simply didn't exist then. People who were different were segregated and their rights were taken away. Bram: Zoals Anne Frank. Like Anne Frank. Everyone knows her story from history class, of course. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. She is the most famous victim from the Netherlands. Her story shows what happens when discrimination and hatred prevail. And the memory of that is a warning, then? Mieke: Precies. Precisely. The memory of the Holocaust teaches us how important freedom and equality are. It's the reason we have laws against discrimination. It's a promise: never again. Wait, so the laws we now have against discrimination are a direct result of the Second World War? Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. Article 1 of the Constitution, about equal treatment, is the most important example of that. We commemorate the victims every year on May 4th to keep that lesson alive. So it's not just about history, but also about how we interact with each other now. That's quite interesting, actually. Yes, that's the core. For your exam, you need to know that understanding the Holocaust is essential to comprehend current Dutch values. Okay, clear. You just used the words 'memory' and 'commemorate'. Are they the same? Mieke: Niet helemaal. Not entirely. A memory is something you have in your mind. But when we 'commemorate', we do it actively and often together. For example, at a monument, with a ceremony. We then pause to remember the victims of the persecution. Logisch. Ah, so commemorating is an official action. And a victim is the person who experienced something terrible. Logical. Mieke: Precies. Die woorden komen vaak terug in vragen hierover. Exactly. Those words often come up in questions about this. A tip for your exam: if you get a question about why we should know about the Holocaust, look for the answer that has to do with 'learning from the past' or 'preventing discrimination'. That's almost always the correct core idea. So the connection to current values is the most important. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about why the Holocaust is important for the Netherlands, then I need to remember: it's a lesson from history about the danger of discrimination and the importance of freedom and equality for everyone. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That's the essence you need to know. Bram: Duidelijk. Kom, we kijken verder. Clear. Come on, let's move on. Mieke: Goed idee. Good idea. Until next time and good luck with learning!

Yes, it's so vast. You'd almost forget that the Netherlands also has land on the other side of the ocean. Mieke: Haha, je bedoelt de Caribische eilanden? Haha, you mean the Caribbean islands? Bram: Precies! Exactly! I know they exist, but how it exactly works with the Kingdom... that has really faded from my memory since school. Then we have a perfect KNM topic for today: The islands in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Look, what's important to remember is that the Kingdom of the Netherlands consists of four countries. Bram: Vier? Four? I always thought the Netherlands was just one country. Mieke: Nederland is één land. Maar het Koninkrijk is groter. Het zijn Nederland, Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten. The Netherlands is one country. But the Kingdom is larger. They are the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. Bram: Wacht even, dus Aruba is een land? En Curaçao ook? Huh, echt? Wait a minute, so Aruba is a country? And Curaçao too? Huh, really? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. They are autonomous countries within the Kingdom. That means they have their own government and their own laws. Bram: Dus ze beslissen bijna alles zelf? Ze hebben een eigen premier? So they decide almost everything themselves? They have their own prime minister? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. But for a few important things, like defense and foreign affairs, the four countries must cooperate. Bram: Oké, dat is wel interessant eigenlijk. En hoe was dat vroeger dan? Waren het altijd al aparte landen? Okay, that's quite interesting actually. And how was that in the past then? Were they always separate countries? Mensen leefden daar lang in slavernij. No, in the past the situation was very different. The islands in the Caribbean were colonies of the Netherlands. People lived there in slavery for a long time. Only much later did the islands gain more self-governance. Oh right, I didn't remember that. When did that change then? Well, Aruba received a 'status aparte' in 1986. And in 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten also received that autonomous status. Bram: Oké, dus dat zijn drie eilanden. Maar er zijn er toch meer? Bonaire bijvoorbeeld? Okay, so those are three islands. But there are more, aren't there? Bonaire, for example? Mieke: Klopt! That's right! Good that you remembered that one. Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius have a different status. They are not a separate country. Bram: Oh? Wat zijn ze dan wel? Oh? What are they then? Those are 'special municipalities' of the Netherlands. They therefore belong directly to the country the Netherlands, a bit like Texel, but with special rules because they are so far away. Wow, that's quite complicated. And the most important question: do all those people there also have a Dutch passport? Yes, that's a very important point. Everyone who lives in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, whether that's in Utrecht, on Aruba or on Saba, has Dutch nationality. And therefore a Dutch passport. I should have known that, haha. So we share the king and the passport. Mieke: Precies. Dat is de kern van de samenwerking. Exactly. That is the core of the cooperation. Okay, so those terms are important. What exactly is the difference between 'autonomous' and 'special municipality'? Mieke: Goed dat je dat vraagt. 'Autonoom' betekent zelfstandig, met een eigen regering. Dat zijn de landen Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten. Ze hebben een status aparte. Good that you ask that. 'Autonomous' means independent, with its own government. Those are the countries Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. They have a status aparte. Bram: Oké, autonoom is dus zelfstandig. Okay, so autonomous means independent. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. And a 'special municipality' belongs directly to the Netherlands. Those are Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius. So their status is not separate, but rather specially connected to the Netherlands. Bram: Duidelijk. En het hele bouwwerk heet ‘het Koninkrijk’. Clear. And the entire structure is called 'the Kingdom'. For the KNM exam, this is a typical question: "How many countries does the Kingdom of the Netherlands consist of?" Many people think one, or they count all six islands. Bram: Maar het antwoord is dus vier. Die moet ik onthouden. But the answer is four. I need to remember that. Mieke: Precies. Vier landen. Dat komt vaak terug op het examen. Exactly. Four countries. That often comes up on the exam. So, if I get a question on the exam, I need to know: the Kingdom has four countries. The Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. They are largely autonomous, but we cooperate. Mieke: Helemaal goed samengevat. Perfectly summarized. And everyone within that kingdom has the same Dutch passport. Bram: Top, die zit. Great, got it. Mieke: Mooi. Zullen we weer een stukje verder wandelen? Nice. Shall we walk a bit further? Bram: Ja, goed idee. Tot de volgende keer! Yes, good idea. Until next time!

Phew, this meeting is taking a long time, isn't it? And it's all quite serious. I don't understand half of what they're saying. Haha, I get that. But what's happening here is important. This is the Utrecht municipal council. Decisions for our city are made here. The municipal council... oh right, that sounds familiar from primary school. But who exactly are those people? Those are the council members. And they are elected by the citizens of the municipality. By you and me, in other words, when we vote. Echt? Wait a minute, so we choose those people who are sitting there talking so seriously now? Really? Yes, every four years there are municipal council elections. Then the members of the municipal council are elected. It is the most important government at the local level. Okay, local. So they don't deal with the whole country, only with Utrecht. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. They decide on things in our own municipality. Think of public spaces: will there be a new park? Or where can a new house be built? Bram: Aha. Aha. And also about things like waste collection and the amount of municipal taxes? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. The municipal council also supervises the municipal executive. That is the daily administration of the municipality. So the municipal council is actually the mayor's boss? Well, 'the boss' is a strong word, but they do supervise him. The council sets the major plans and the executive carries them out. Look, now they're going to vote on a decision. Bram: Interessant. Interesting. So any citizen can, in principle, become a council member? In principle, yes, if you are 18 years or older, live in the municipality, and stand for election through a political party. That's actually well organized. That you, as a citizen, have influence over your own city. I really didn't remember how that worked. Mieke: Kijk, daarom zitten we hier. See, that's why we're here. Good for your knowledge, and essential for the KNM exam. Bram: Oké, dus even checken. Okay, so just to check. The 'municipality' is the city or the village. And the 'municipal council' is the group of people who make decisions for that municipality? Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. And such a person in the council is called a 'council member'. And the gathering, like where we are now, is 'the meeting'. Bram: En zij beslissen dus over de 'openbare ruimte'. Dat is een belangrijk woord, denk ik? And so they decide on 'public space'. That's an important word, I think? Yes, remember that one. Public space means the streets, parks, squares... all places in the municipality that are accessible to everyone. For your exam, pay attention: you sometimes get a short audio fragment of such a meeting. Try to hear what the topic is. Is it about money, about construction, or about safety? That is often the question. Bram: Ah, een luistervraag dus. Goeie tip. Ah, a listening question then. Good tip. So if I get a question about the municipal council on the exam, then I need to know that the members, the council members that is, are chosen by the citizens of the municipality. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And that they make decisions about local matters, so about their own city or their own village. Bram: Helder. Clear. I think I'll go vote next time after all. Mieke: Haha, goed zo. Kom, we gaan. Tot morgen! Haha, good. Come on, let's go. See you tomorrow!

Wow, it's so big and busy here. I didn't know you could find so many different courses/programs in one place. Haha, yes, welcome to the open day of an ROC. A good place to see everything you can learn here. And a perfect topic for today. Bram: Een ROC... An ROC... That's for MBO courses/programs, right? I did learn about that in school, but it's faded a bit, I must admit. Mieke: Klopt helemaal. Heel praktisch dus. That's absolutely right. MBO stands for 'middelbaar beroepsonderwijs' (senior secondary vocational education). It's education that prepares you for a specific profession. So, very practical. So if someone wants to become a car mechanic, for example, they come to school here? Mieke: Precies. Of kapper, kok, beveiliger, verpleegkundige... Exactly. Or hairdresser, chef, security guard, nurse... Look, on this board you can see the different sectors. Technology, Care and Welfare, Economy... And those students will actually pursue that profession later? That is the goal, yes. The programs often have good collaborations with companies in the region. Students then do internships and learn the profession in practice. So the education aligns well with the job market. That's important. Mieke: Zeker. Definitely. Many companies are looking for people with an MBO diploma. After completing their studies, most students go straight to work. Bram: Oh, interessant. Oh, interesting. And it's for young people after high school, but also for adults? Yes, also for adults who want to learn a new trade or retrain themselves. You can follow a full MBO program, or sometimes a shorter course. Bram: Wacht even, ROC... Wat betekent die afkorting ook alweer precies? Die had ik moeten weten, haha. Wait a minute, ROC... What does that abbreviation stand for again exactly? I should have known that, haha. Haha, no problem. ROC stands for 'Regionaal Opleidingencentrum' (Regional Training Centre). 'Regional', because you find them in every region of the Netherlands. This ROC, for example, has multiple locations in and around Utrecht. Ah, a regional training centre. And you just mentioned an MBO program and a course. What's the difference between them? An MBO program usually lasts between one and four years and leads to an official diploma. A course is often much shorter and is intended to teach a specific skill, without obtaining a full diploma. Bram: Helder. Clear. So you really learn here for a job in a specific sector. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And pay attention, because this is very important for your exam. On the KNM exam, you often get a question about professions. Mieke: Bijvoorbeeld: ‘Fatima wil kapster worden. Welke opleiding gaat zij doen?’ For example: 'Fatima wants to become a hairdresser. Which program will she follow?' Then you need to know that the answer is 'an MBO program' or 'go to an ROC'. They never ask about HBO or university for these kinds of practical professions. Okay, so if I see a question on the exam about a practical profession like electrician, chef, or care worker, I need to directly link that to MBO and the ROC. Mieke: Ja, precies. Mbo is beroepsonderwijs. Yes, exactly. That's the core of what you need to remember. MBO is vocational education. Bram: Goed, die ga ik onthouden. Zullen we nu even bij de sector techniek gaan kijken? Als ingenieur ben ik toch wel nieuwsgierig. Okay, I'll remember that. Shall we now take a look at the technology sector? As an engineer, I am quite curious. Mieke: Haha, ja, leuk. Doen we. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, yeah, great. We'll do that. Until next time! Bram: Tot morgen! See you tomorrow!

I've been seeing that more often lately, a few times a week. Mieke: Ah, dat zal de thuiszorg zijn. Voor meneer De Wit waarschijnlijk. Ah, that will be home care. Probably for Mr. De Wit. Bram: Thuiszorg? Isn't that just when you care for your sick mother? His daughter comes there every day, doesn't she? No, that's a very good point. Those two things are often confused. Let's clarify that, because this is an important KNM topic. Okay, please. Because I see two types of help, but I don't know the difference. What exactly is home care then? Look, home care is professional help you receive at home. That can be medical care, for example help with medication or wound care. But also help with household tasks. So that woman in the uniform is a professional? A nurse or a caregiver? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's her job. She works for an organization and is paid to help people at home who need it. For example, the elderly, or people who have just been discharged from the hospital. And you don't just get that, I assume? No, usually you need an indication for that. That means a doctor or the municipality officially determines that someone is entitled to support at home. Okay, clear. But what about his daughter then? Who does his groceries and cooks? What is that? Mieke: Dat is mantelzorg. That is informal care. An informal caregiver is usually family, a good friend, or one of the neighbours. That person provides long-term and unpaid help to someone who needs care. Ah, so my aunt who used to cook for grandpa every day, she was actually an informal caregiver. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. She was his informal caregiver. That is incredibly important in the Netherlands. Many people can continue to live at home longer thanks to that help from family or friends. Yes, my grandpa absolutely did not want to go to a nursing home. So my aunt had to help him with groceries and food. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And my grandma, for example, couldn't put on her compression stockings herself after an operation. So someone from home care came every morning specifically for that. So it can also be at the same time? That you have both home care and an informal caregiver? Yes, certainly, that happens very often. The home care professional then provides the medical care, and the informal caregiver does the groceries or provides companionship. Okay, just for clarity. The two words I really need to know are 'home care' and 'informal caregiver'? Yes, that's the core. Home care is professional care, organized and paid. An informal caregiver is a person from one's own environment, such as family or neighbours, who provides unpaid support. Bram: Helder. Een professional tegenover een bekende, eigenlijk. Clear. A professional versus an acquaintance, actually. What's important to remember for your exam: they often give an example situation. For example: 'An old woman has fallen and needs help with showering.' Bram: Oké... Okay... Then you need to know that this is typically something for home care. That is specialized, physical care. That is usually the work of a professional. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about the difference, then I need to remember: home care is paid, professional help. And informal care is unpaid help, often by family or friends. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. If you know that difference, you can answer the questions about this topic. Bram: Top, die zit. Dank je, Mieke. Great, I've got that. Thank you, Mieke. Mieke: Graag gedaan. You're welcome. Good luck with studying and until next time!

Mijn nieuwe paleisje. So, Mieke, what do you think of it? My new little palace. Mieke: Het is prachtig, Bram! Heel ruim. It's beautiful, Bram! Very spacious. But I almost don't dare to ask what you're paying... Haha, no, let's not talk about that. One of your students, Yusuf, recently told me that he lives 'anti-squat' for almost nothing. What exactly is that? Mieke: Ah, anti-kraak. Ah, anti-squat. Yes, that's a special way of living. It was devised to combat vacancy. Bram: Leegstand? Je bedoelt lege gebouwen? Vacancy? You mean empty buildings? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. If a building is vacant, for example an old office or a school, the owner doesn't want squatters to move in. That's illegal. Bram: Logisch. Makes sense. And so he lets people live there for a while to 'guard' it? Yes, but it's very temporary. The owner often doesn't yet know what he's going to do with the building. Maybe it will be sold, or demolished. And that's why you can live there, because you can also move out very quickly. Hoe snel is 'snel'? Okay, there's the catch. How fast is 'fast'? Mieke: Heel snel. Very fast. The notice period is often only 14 or 28 days. That's the biggest disadvantage: the enormous uncertainty. Bram: Wauw, twee weken maar? Dat is echt niks. Dan moet je dus heel flexibel zijn. Wow, only two weeks? That's really nothing. Then you have to be very flexible. Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. You always have to take into account that you'll have to find something else quickly. That's why it's mainly for students or artists. Often young people who don't have many belongings. And you pay less then, I assume? Mieke: Veel minder. Much less. You don't pay rent, but a small fee. Usually between 150 and 300 euros per month. That's because you're not a tenant, but a kind of 'caretaker' for the property. A fee, not rent. That's certainly a very important legal difference. Mieke: Enorm belangrijk. Enormously important. Because if you're not a tenant, you also don't have tenant protection. So they can really evict you after that short notice period. Bram: Wacht even. Wait a minute. The contract you sign... is that a rental agreement then? No, and you should remember that word: it's a loan agreement for use. 'Loan for use' means you can use something, you borrow it. So you only pay a fee for the costs, such as energy. Okay, a loan agreement for use. I get it. You temporarily borrow the living space to prevent vacancy, but in return you have a lot of uncertainty. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's a solution, but not for everyone. Phew, I don't want to think about it. It took me three days to assemble this wardrobe. If I then hear that I might have to move again in two weeks... Haha, no, it's definitely not for you. But for someone who is very flexible, it can be a godsend. For your KNM exam, it's important that you know the disadvantages. You often get a situation presented. For example: 'A family with two young children is looking for a home. Is anti-squat living a good option?' And the answer is 'no', of course. Mieke: Precies. Omdat het te veel onzekerheid geeft. Onthoud dus: korte opzegtermijn en geen huurbescherming. Exactly. Because it gives too much uncertainty. So remember: short notice period and no tenant protection. Okay, so if I see this on the exam, I need to know that anti-squat living is cheap and temporary, but the notice period is very short. The contract is called a loan agreement and it's only suitable if you are very flexible. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Dat is de kern. Exactly right. That's the core. Well, then I'm really happy with my expensive, but secure rental home, haha. Mieke: Dat snap ik! Geniet ervan. En we spreken elkaar morgen weer. I understand that! Enjoy it. And we'll talk again tomorrow. Bram: Is goed, tot morgen! Okay, see you tomorrow!

Hey Mieke, look. I'm looking at my payslip... quite a lot of money is going to my pension. That's different from the AOW, right? Mieke: Ja, zeker. Yes, definitely. That's a good question, because many people confuse the two. Shall we clarify that? Bram: Graag! Please! Because I did learn what AOW is in school, but I don't remember exactly anymore. Okay, look. The AOW is the basic state pension. AOW stands for Algemene Ouderdomswet (General Old Age Pensions Act). It's a basic benefit for everyone who has lived or worked in the Netherlands. Bram: Wacht even, voor iedereen? Dus ook als je nooit hebt gewerkt? Wait a minute, for everyone? So even if you've never worked? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. That's why it's called a national insurance scheme. It's for the whole population. You automatically accrue it for every year you live in the Netherlands, from age 15 until your retirement age. Ah, so the pension I'm building up here through my work is extra? On top of the AOW? Mieke: Helemaal juist. Exactly right. The pension through your employer is a supplement. The AOW is the basic provision. Many people have such an extra pension, but not everyone. The AOW is there for all of us. Okay, clear. And when do you get that AOW? It used to always be when you turned 65, right? That's right, that used to be the case. But that age has been increased. We now call it the AOW age or the state pension age. That depends on your date of birth. Oh really? And what is that age now, approximately? Currently, the state pension age is 67 years. The government sometimes adjusts that age because we are, on average, getting older and older. Bram: Logisch eigenlijk. En wie betaalt dat dan? Gewoon, de overheid? Logical, actually. And who pays for that then? Just, the government? Yes, it comes from the government, but a specific organization arranges the payment. That is the Sociale Verzekeringsbank, the SVB. When you've almost reached the AOW age, you'll automatically receive a letter from the SVB. The SVB, I've heard that name before. And do you also know what amount you get then? The exact amount depends on your situation. Whether you live alone or with a partner, for example. But it is a basic amount to live on. Okay, so you're talking about 'national insurance scheme' and 'basic benefit'. Those are important words, I think. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. Remember that 'national insurance scheme' means it's for everyone who lives in the Netherlands. And 'basic benefit' means it's a foundation. It's the minimum you're entitled to. And then you also have 'the state pension age'. So that's the new name for 'turning 65'. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You really need to know those words for your exam. Well, a tip for your exam: they often ask a question about age. For example: 'From what age do you receive AOW in the Netherlands?' The wrong answer is then '65 years'. The correct answer is the current retirement age, so around 67 years. Okay, so if I get a question about AOW on the exam, I need to know: it's a basic government pension, for everyone, from the retirement age. And that the Sociale Verzekeringsbank, the SVB, pays it. Then you've got the main points covered. Bram: Top, bedankt! Nu snap ik het verschil. Zo, nu weer even werken. Great, thanks! Now I understand the difference. Right, back to work now. Mieke: Succes! En tot morgen! Good luck! And see you tomorrow!

Deze foto's zijn echt heftig. Wow, what an impressive exhibition, Mieke. These photos are really intense. Mieke: Ja, zeker. Yes, definitely. It's a very important, but also a very dark part of our history. Look, next to this photo there's a sign with the word 'antisemitism'. I roughly know what it is, but what exactly does it mean again? That's a very important concept, also for your KNM exam. Antisemitism is a specific form of hatred. It is hatred against Jews. Ah, so it's specifically aimed at people who have the Jewish religion, or a Jewish background? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's a form of discrimination that has existed for a very long time. And in the Netherlands, that is strictly forbidden. Okay, I knew that discrimination is forbidden. But is antisemitism specifically mentioned in the law? Antisemitisme is dus strafbaar. It falls under the general prohibition of discrimination. The constitution states that everyone is equal. You may not discriminate against anyone based on religion, race, or anything else. Antisemitism is therefore punishable. And that, of course, has everything to do with this exhibition, with the Second World War. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. The Holocaust, the murder of six million Jews, was the most extreme and terrible form of antisemitism. The history we see here is the reason the Netherlands takes this so seriously. Bram: Ja, logisch. Een geschiedenis die we nooit mogen vergeten. Gebeurt het nu nog steeds veel, antisemitisme? Yes, that makes sense. A history we must never forget. Is antisemitism still common now? Unfortunately, yes. It's not just something from the past. That's why it's so important that the law forbids this. People who, for example, attack a synagogue, or insult Jewish people, are committing a crime. Wow, it's actually bizarre that that's still necessary. So that law isn't there for nothing. No, certainly not. Freedom of religion is a right everyone has in the Netherlands. And the law protects that right. For everyone. Okay, so just to recap for myself. So the word antisemitism specifically means hatred against Jews? Yes, that's right. And it is a form of discrimination. Those four words are the most important here: antisemitism, Jews, hatred, and discrimination. Bram: En het is dus verboden. And it is therefore forbidden. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. What's important to remember: on the exam you might get a question like: 'What is antisemitism?'. The correct answer is always the option that says something about 'hatred against Jews'. Bram: Duidelijk. Understood. So if I see this on the exam, I need to know that antisemitism is hatred against Jews, that it's a form of discrimination, and that it's forbidden by law in the Netherlands. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely correct. That's the core you need to know. Mieke: Nou, zullen we verder lopen? Er is nog meer te zien. Well, shall we walk on? There's still more to see. Bram: Ja, is goed. Dank voor de uitleg. En tot de volgende keer! Okay. Thanks for the explanation. And until next time!

Phew, what a crowd here at the Anne Frank House, huh? When I walk here, I always think about history. And about how the Netherlands has changed. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. Society is always in motion. New people arrive, people leave. That's timeless. Bram: Zeker. Certainly. For example, I recently heard that the Surinamese community is one of the larger population groups. How was that again? Why did they come here? Ah, that's a very important piece of KNM history. That's about Suriname and its independence. Bram: Onafhankelijkheid? Was Suriname van Nederland dan? Independence? Was Suriname part of the Netherlands then? Mieke: Jazeker. Yes, indeed. For a very long time, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands. It belonged to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The people who lived there also had a Dutch passport. Bram: Oh, echt waar? Oh, really? I didn't know that. I thought that only applied to the Antilles. So they were simply Dutch citizens? Mieke: Inderdaad. Maar in 1975 veranderde dat. Toen werd Suriname een onafhankelijk land. Een eigen staat, met een eigen regering. Indeed. But in 1975, that changed. Then Suriname became an independent country. Its own state, with its own government. Okay, and then came the big migration? Why? It had become their own country, isn't that a good thing? That's a logical question. Look, the people in Suriname then got a choice. They could become Surinamese, or they could keep their Dutch nationality. Wait a minute, so you had to choose between your country and your passport? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. If you wanted to remain Dutch, you had to move to the Netherlands. Many people found the future in the new, independent Suriname uncertain. They didn't know how things would go with the economy or politics. Bram: Ah, dus uit voorzorg, eigenlijk. Ze kozen voor de zekerheid van Nederland. Ah, so as a precaution, actually. They chose the certainty of the Netherlands. Tienduizenden mensen kwamen in korte tijd hierheen. Yes, that was the reason for many. That's why around 1975 there was a very large migration of Surinamese people to the Netherlands. Tens of thousands of people came here in a short time. Wow, I can imagine that. That must have been an enormous change, for them and for the Netherlands. Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. And that migration really changed Dutch society. It is an important population group with a deep, sometimes painful, history with our country. And that relationship still exists, I assume? Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. Even though the political situation is different, there is still a strong bond between the countries. Many families live partly here and partly there. That historical bond and the relationship we have, that remains. Duidelijk. Okay, so 'the bond' and 'the relationship' refer to the connection throughout history. Clear. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And pay attention, this is a typical exam question. For the KNM exam, you need to know why that large group of Surinamese people came to the Netherlands. Okay, so the question is: why was there a large migration from Suriname around 1975? Yes, and the correct answer is: because Suriname became independent and people had to choose. They chose the security of the Dutch passport. Okay, so if I summarize correctly: Suriname was a colony, became an independent country in 1975, and then people were given the choice. Many people chose to move to the Netherlands. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That migration was a direct consequence of that independence. That's the core you need to remember. Bram: Helder. Zullen we? Understood. Well, after all that history, I'm in the mood for coffee. Shall we? Mieke: Goed idee. Good idea. And for everyone listening: until next time!

Wow, Mieke, look at this ballot paper. It's almost a meter long! I didn't know we had so many political parties in the Netherlands. Haha, yes, that's typically Dutch. We call that a multi-party system. And that's exactly an important topic for the KNM exam. A multi-party system... oh yes, that sounds familiar from high school. But why are there so many? In some countries, you only have two. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. In the Netherlands, it's quite easy to establish a new political party. If a group of people has a strong idea, they can participate in the elections. Okay, and how do you know who to vote for then? I see names here I've never heard before. Every party has a party program. It contains all their viewpoints. So, what they consider important for the country, for example, for the climate, the economy, or healthcare. Right, the party program. And the person at the top of this long list, that's the lead candidate, right? Mieke: Precies! Exactly! The lead candidate is the face of the party. You often see that person on television in debates to explain the party's viewpoints. And then you still have the division between left and right. I remember that. The SP, for example, is a left-wing party, and the VVD is a right-wing party. Mieke: Heel goed. Very good. Generally, left-wing parties want the government to regulate a lot and care for people. Think of a good social safety net. The power of the government is used to promote equality. And right is the opposite then? More freedom for people and businesses themselves? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. Right-wing parties find personal responsibility and economic freedom very important. They often want fewer regulations and lower taxes. That's quite interesting actually. So it's really a choice between different visions on how society should be organized. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And because no one completely agrees with each other, we have so many options to choose from. After the elections, it's determined how many votes each party received. That's how the number of seats in the House of Representatives is determined. And you also often hear the words 'progressive' and 'conservative'. What exactly is the difference there? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. A progressive party wants to renew and change society. A conservative party, on the other hand, wants to keep many things as they are now. Often, left is more progressive and right is more conservative, but that's not always the case. Bram: Ah, duidelijk. Ah, clear. So progressive is looking forward and conservative is more about preserving what exists. Pay attention for the exam: you sometimes get an image of a ballot paper or a candidate list. You don't need to know all the parties, but you do need to recognize that it's about political parties and perhaps be able to point out the name of a well-known party. Okay, so when I see such a long list, I need to remember: the Netherlands has many political parties, with their own party program and a lead candidate. And there's a difference between left and right. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. If you know that, you can certainly answer the questions about this topic. Bram: Top. Great. Well, I'm going to cast my vote in that booth now. Mieke: Heel goed! Tot de volgende keer. Very good! Until next time.

Yes, an open day like this is always popular. People want to know what they can study next. Bram: Kijk, die stand daar. VAVO. Look, that stand over there. VAVO. I've heard that name before, but what exactly is it again? Mieke: Ah, VAVO. Ah, VAVO. That's an important topic for the KNM exam. It's a form of adult education. Bram: Volwasseneneducatie? Adult education? So really for people who are already a bit older? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. VAVO stands for Continued General Adult Education. It's for adults, usually from 18 years old, who want to get their high school diploma. Oh right, so if you, for example, failed your final exams, or stopped school? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. That's why it's often called 'a second chance'. It gives you the opportunity to still get that diploma. A second chance, that sounds good. Do you have to go to school full-time again, just like before? Mieke: Dat kan, maar het hoeft niet. Vaak kun je kiezen. Er zijn voltijdopleidingen, maar ook veel deeltijdopleidingen. Die kun je dan 's avonds volgen. You can, but you don't have to. Often you can choose. There are full-time courses, but also many part-time courses. You can follow those in the evenings. Ah, so it's a kind of evening school? So you can do it alongside your work? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Flexibility is very important. And you don't always have to retake all subjects. Bram: Hoe bedoel je dat? What do you mean by that? Well, imagine: someone wants to pursue a healthcare education, but that person hasn't had the subject biology. The prior education is then not sufficient. Through VAVO, that person can then only obtain a certificate for the subject biology. That's quite handy. So you can get a complete diploma, or just a certificate for one or two subjects. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. That's very useful. Especially for people who want to continue learning after their eighteenth birthday. Compulsory education is then over, but the opportunity to learn is not. Bram: En is zoiets duur? Wie gaat dat betalen? And is something like that expensive? Who's going to pay for that? That depends. Sometimes the municipality contributes, especially for young people. Otherwise, you pay tuition yourself. But it's an investment in your future. Bram: Logisch. Makes sense. Especially if you're going to look for a better job afterwards. Bram: Oké, wacht even. Okay, wait a minute. You just said 'certificate'. What exactly is the difference between a diploma and a certificate? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. You get a diploma when you pass an entire course of study, for example, havo. A certificate is proof that you have passed one specific subject, such as mathematics or English. Duidelijk. Ah, so a certificate is a 'piece' of a diploma. Clear. What's important to remember for your exam: they often ask 'Who is VAVO intended for?'. The correct answer is always an option that's about 'adults who want to obtain a high school diploma'. So pay attention to the word 'adults'. Okay, so if I see a question about VAVO, I need to remember that it's adult education. A second chance for people aged 18 and over to obtain a diploma or certificate. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You've understood it completely. That way you can continue learning if you are no longer subject to compulsory education. Bram: Top. Nou, ik ben weer een stuk wijzer. Zullen we nu even een kopje koffie gaan halen? Great. Well, I'm a lot wiser again. Shall we go get a cup of coffee now? Mieke: Lijkt me een uitstekend plan. Tot de volgende keer! Sounds like an excellent plan. Until next time!

Look Mieke, a poster about organ donation here in the waiting room. A new law for that came out a few years ago, didn't it? Mieke: Ja, dat klopt. In 2020. Yes, that's right. In 2020. The new organ donation law. That's a very important topic for the KNM exam. Bram: Oh, echt? Oh, really? Well, explain it then, because I don't really know much about it, haha. Okay, here it comes. It used to be different. Back then, you had to actively register if you wanted to be a donor. If you did nothing, you weren't one. Okay, that was the 'no yes, unless' system, I believe. And now? Now it's a 'yes, unless' system. Everyone in the Netherlands aged 18 and older is automatically entered into the donor register. Bram: Wacht even, iedereen? Zonder dat je iets doet? Dat is een grote verandering. Wait a minute, everyone? Without doing anything? That's a big change. Mieke: Ja. Yes. You receive a letter from the government when you turn 18, or when you come to live here with a residence permit. That letter states that you must make a choice. Bram: En wat zijn de keuzes dan? And what are the choices then? Mieke: Je hebt vier opties. Eén: ja, ik geef toestemming voor orgaandonatie. Je kunt zelfs specificeren welke organen je wilt doneren. You have four options. One: yes, I give permission for organ donation. You can even specify which organs you want to donate. Oh, that's good to know. Two: no, I do not give permission. Three: my family, the next of kin, may decide after my death. And four: a specific person you choose may decide. Those are clear choices. But what if you lose that letter, or just forget to reply? That happens very often, doesn't it? Exactly, and that is the most important point of the new law. If you don't respond, you'll receive a reminder. If you still don't respond, you will be registered with the text 'No objection to organ donation'. No objection... that sounds a bit vague, but it just means 'yes', then? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. In practice, it means you are a donor. Doctors may then use your organs and tissue for transplantation after your death. Phew, that's something to think about carefully. So if you absolutely don't want it, you really had to actively object. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. You have to register your choice yourself. With this law, the government wanted to increase the number of donors. There was a great shortage, and many people couldn't get a transplant because too few organs were available. Ah, that way. So it's really meant to save lives. And... can you change your choice later? Suppose you didn't fill anything in, but you change your mind later. Heel eenvoudig. Yes, you can adjust your choice at any time. You can do that online, with your DigiD, on the donor register website. Very simple. Bram: Oké, dat is wel een geruststelling. Het is dus niet definitief. Okay, that's a relief. So it's not definitive. You just mentioned organs and tissue. What exactly is the difference? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. Organs are, for example, your heart, lungs, or kidneys. Tissue is, for example, skin, bone tissue, or the cornea of your eye. For your exam, the words donor register, consent, and next of kin are very important to know. Bram: Oké, donorregister, toestemming, nabestaanden. Die onthoud ik. Okay, donor register, consent, next of kin. I'll remember those. Pay close attention, because a typical exam question is: 'You do not respond to the letters from the donor register. What happens then?' Bram: En het antwoord is dus...? And the answer is...? The correct answer is that you are registered with 'no objection to organ donation'. That means you give consent. Okay, so to summarize for the exam. Since the 2020 law, if you are 18 years or older and do not respond, you are automatically registered as a donor. So you must actively say 'no' if you don't want that. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That's the core of what you need to know. Bram: Duidelijk. Weer wat geleerd over mijn eigen land, haha. Clear. Learned something new about my own country, haha. Mieke: Zie je wel! Tot de volgende keer. See! Until next time. Bram: Tot morgen! See you tomorrow!

Haha, yes, that's a classic sign. Welcome to a typical Dutch student house. How exactly does that work? For the KNM exam, how do students usually live in the Netherlands? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. Let's list that out. Well, most students in the Netherlands go 'op kamers' when they start studying. That means they leave their parents' home. Bram: Op kamers? Dus ze huren een eigen kamer? 'Op kamers'? So they rent their own room? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. They rent a student room. Usually, that's in a house where other students also live. That's what we call a student house. Okay, so everyone has their own room, but you share the rest of the house? Mieke: Ja, klopt. Yes, that's right. You have your own bedroom and study room. But you almost always have a shared kitchen and a shared bathroom. The people you live with are your housemates. Sounds fun, but also... messy, haha. That can certainly be the case. But it's especially very difficult to find a room. Student housing is really a problem in the Netherlands. Bram: Huh, echt? Waarom dan? Huh, really? Why is that? Because there are many more students than rooms. There's an enormous waiting list. Sometimes you have to register while you're still in high school to even have a chance. Wow, that's intense. What do you do if you can't find a room in a student house? There are a few other options. Some universities have a campus. Those are special buildings with rooms, close to the university. Bram: Ah, een campus. Zoals in Amerikaanse films. Ah, a campus. Like in American movies. A bit like that. Another option is to rent a room from a landlady (hospita). That's usually an older woman who rents out one or two rooms in her own house. Oh, so you really live in someone's home. That's different. Yes, then you often have more rules. But it can also be quieter. What's important to remember is that students who rent a room also have tenant rights. Okay, so a 'hospita' is a specific term? And a 'huisgenoot' is just someone who lives in the same house? Mieke: Precies. Precisely. A housemate is the person with whom you, for example, use the shared kitchen and bathroom. It doesn't have to be a friend. Duidelijk. And a landlady is therefore specifically someone who rents out a room in her own house. Clear. Pay attention, here's a tip for your exam. Sometimes you'll see a photo of a messy kitchen or a hallway with lots of coats and shoes. Bram: Oké... Okay... The question then is: 'What living situation is this likely?' The correct answer is then almost always 'a student house'. Bram: Handig! Handy! So if I get a question about how students usually live, I should answer that they rent a student room in a house with other students? Mieke: Exact. Exactly. That is the most common form of living for students in the Netherlands. Remember that well. Alright, come on. We need to continue with our own viewing, before we're too late. Bram: Haha, ja, inderdaad. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, yes, indeed. Until next time!

Mieke, nice of you to drop by for coffee. Look, I've received mail from my pension fund. I really don't understand half of this. All those numbers... Haha, yes, those letters always look complicated. But it is important. This is about your pension, the money for when you stop working later. Bram: Precies! Exactly! But how does building up a pension in the Netherlands actually work? I have a feeling you know more about that than I do. Mieke: Dat is een goede KNM-vraag. Het Nederlandse pensioenstelsel heeft eigenlijk drie onderdelen. We noemen dat de drie 'pijlers'. That's a good KNM question. The Dutch pension system actually has three parts. We call those the three 'pillars'. Bram: Drie pijlers? Three pillars? Okay, like a house standing on three posts? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. Pillar one is the AOW. That is the General Old Age Pensions Act. That is a basic pension from the government. Everyone who has lived or worked in the Netherlands builds this up. Oh yes, the AOW. So everyone gets that, even if you've never had a job? In principle, yes, if you have lived here. You receive it from the AOW age. That age is not the same for everyone; it is slowly rising. Bram: Oké, dat is pijler één. De basis. En die brief die ik hier heb? Okay, that's pillar one. The foundation. And that letter I have here? Mieke: Dat is pijler twee. That is pillar two. That is the pension you build up through your employer. Most people in paid employment build up an extra pension this way. Ah, that's why the letter from the pension fund. I pay for that every month, right? Mieke: Klopt. That's right. You pay a part, and your employer often pays a part too. That is called the contribution. All those contributions go to a pension fund, and they invest the money for you. Wait, so my employer also contributes to my pension? I wasn't even sure about that anymore. I started here eight years ago and just signed that contract. Haha, yes, most people do that. But it is an important part of your income for later. This is often a significant supplement to the AOW. Bram: Oké, dus AOW en werkgever. Wat is dan de derde pijler? Okay, so AOW and employer. What is the third pillar then? The third pillar is what you arrange yourself. That is a supplement you can build up yourself. For example, you can save extra money in a special bank account or invest. Bram: Zelf sparen... Oei. Daar ben ik niet zo goed in. Dat is dus niet verplicht? Saving yourself... Oh dear. I'm not very good at that. So that's not mandatory? No, that is entirely your own choice. It is for people who think that pillars one and two are not enough for them, or who want to stop working earlier. Okay, so those three together form your total pension. That's clear now. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. What's important to remember for your exam are the words we just used. Words like 'the employer', 'the contribution' and 'the pension fund'. Okay, so 'the employer' pays a part of 'the premium' to 'the pension fund'. And that fund manages the money for my pension. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. Those three words often come up when discussing work and income. Just a tip for the KNM exam. Sometimes you'll see an image with three pillars, numbered 1, 2 and 3. You then have to choose what each pillar means. Ah, that's a good one. So then I need to know: 1 is AOW, 2 is via the employer, and 3 is self-saving. Mieke: Ja, precies. Onthoud die volgorde goed. Dat is een typische KNM-vraag. Yes, exactly. Remember that order well. That's a typical KNM question. Okay, understood. So if I get a question about how you build up your pension, I need to think of the three pillars: the AOW from the government, the pension through your work, and your own supplementary savings. Mieke: Perfect samengevat. Perfectly summarized. If you know that, you can definitely answer the questions about the pension system. Bram: Top! Bedankt. Great! Thanks. The coffee's gone, so I have to get back to work. To pay premiums, haha. Mieke: Haha, inderdaad. Zet 'm op! Tot de volgende keer. Haha, indeed. Go for it! Until next time.

Yes, it was about the transgender law, right? That's an important topic, also for the KNM exam. Bram: Echt? Really? I must honestly say that I didn't know exactly how all that works in the Netherlands. Well, look, I'll explain it simply. In the Netherlands, you have the right to make your own choices. That's an important value that we have. Yes, I understand that. But imagine you are a transgender person and you want to officially change your gender. What is the procedure then? The first step you take is to go to the municipality. There you apply for the change. Bram: En kan dat zomaar? Of heb je documenten nodig? And can you just do that? Or do you need documents? You need a special declaration. You get that declaration from an expert, for example, a doctor or a psychologist. Ah, so an expert who confirms that this is your wish. That it truly suits you. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. What's important to know: you don't need to have had surgery. The legislation that previously made that mandatory has fortunately changed. Oh, I didn't know that! That seems like a big change to me. And what happens at the municipality then? The municipality then adjusts the official registration of your gender in the Personal Records Database, the BRP. That's the system where all citizens are registered. And then it's also different in your passport? That is an important document. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. The letter 'V' for female or 'M' for male in your passport is then adjusted to your new registration. Then the change is completely official. Bram: En is er een minimumleeftijd voor? And is there a minimum age for it? Yes, you must be 16 years or older to be able to start this procedure independently. Okay, understood. So it's really about your gender identity, the feeling you have inside, and that you can make that official. Yes, it's part of the right to self-determination. The freedom to decide for yourself who you are. Bram: Je gebruikte net het woord 'geslachtsidentiteit'. Is dat iets anders dan gewoon 'geslacht'? You just used the word 'gender identity'. Is that different from just 'gender'? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. 'Gender' is the registration at your birth, which is stated in your passport. Your 'gender identity' is how you feel deep inside. For most people, that's the same, but not for a transgender person. Bram: Aha, dat is een helder verschil. Aha, that is a clear difference. The words you need to remember for the exam are: the procedure, the change, the registration, and official. These really belong to this theme. A tip for your exam: they often ask what you need for the official change. There is often a wrong answer that says: 'a medical operation'. Ah, and that is therefore no longer required. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The correct answer is 'a statement from an expert'. That is an important detail that distinguishes the old legislation from the new. Okay, so if I get a question, I need to remember: a transgender person can officially change their gender in the Netherlands from the age of 16. Yes, and what do you need for that? No operation, but a statement from an expert. And the change happens at the municipality. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Dat is de kern. Absolutely correct. That is the core. Bram: Oh, de volgende spreker wordt aangekondigd. We moeten stil zijn. Oh, the next speaker is being announced. We need to be quiet. Mieke: Ja, precies. We praten morgen verder. Yes, exactly. We'll continue talking tomorrow. Bram: Top, tot morgen! Great, see you tomorrow!

Zoveel kransen. How impressive it always is, isn't it, such a commemoration. So many wreaths. Mieke: Ja, heel bijzonder. Yes, very special. Look, that wreath there, from the veterans from former Dutch East Indies. Oh yes... That's Indonesia now, isn't it? I know it was a colony, but how that exactly ended... that's honestly a bit vague to me. That's an important piece of history. And also an important topic for the KNM exam. Shall we talk about that for a moment? Bram: Graag. Vertel. Gladly. Tell me. Okay. Well, after the Second World War, in 1945, the Indonesian leaders declared independence. They wanted to be their own country, separate from the Netherlands. Bram: Dus toen was het klaar? In 1945? So then it was over? In 1945? No, unfortunately not. The Dutch government didn't agree with it at all. The Netherlands wanted to keep the colony, because it was economically very important. Ah, so that's when the struggle really began. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. A difficult four-year period followed. An independence struggle, or a revolution, you could also call it. The Netherlands sent soldiers to the former colony. Bram: Wacht, militairen? Was dat een oorlog? Wait, soldiers? Was that a war? Yes, it was a war. But the Dutch government called it something else. They called the military operations 'police actions'. As if they were small police actions. Police actions... that sounds a lot less severe than 'war'. A bit of a strange name. It certainly was. There was a lot of violence and many casualties on both sides. It is a dark page in Dutch history. Bram: Oké, en hoe eindigde het toen? Okay, and how did it end then? Eventually, after a lot of international pressure, especially from the United States, the Netherlands had to accept independence. That happened at the end of 1949. Bram: 1949 dus. Vier jaar later pas. 1949 then. Only four years later. Mieke: Ja. Yes. Then the official 'transfer of sovereignty' took place. The Netherlands handed over power to the new Republic of Indonesia. That word, 'transfer of sovereignty', what exactly does that mean? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. 'Sovereignty' means the highest power, that as a country you are your own boss. And a 'transfer' is giving something to another. So the Netherlands handed over power over Indonesia to the Indonesians themselves. And that was therefore the 'recognition' of their independence. Mieke: Precies. De officiële erkenning. Exactly. The official recognition. What's important to remember for your KNM exam: the year 1949. They often ask in which year the Netherlands officially recognized Indonesia's independence. That is therefore 1949. Okay, 1949. I'll remember that. Not 1945, when they declared it themselves, but 1949, when the Netherlands agreed. So, to recap: after the war, the colony Indonesia wanted to be independent. A struggle followed, which the Netherlands called 'police actions'. And in 1949 was the official transfer of sovereignty. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That is the core you need to know for the exam. Phew, quite an intense story. Let's be silent for a moment now, for the commemoration. Mieke: Goed idee. Tot morgen. Good idea. See you tomorrow.
