Phew, that was a tough debate, wasn't it? All those politicians arguing with each other. Haha, yes, that's part of it. They all want to show why people should vote for them. But then I wonder... after the elections, they suddenly have to start working together. How is that arranged? Mieke: Dat is een perfecte KNM-vraag. Dat hele proces heet de formatie. That's a perfect KNM question. That whole process is called the formation. The formation... oh yes, you hear that word very often on the news. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Look, in the Netherlands, you vote for a political party. But almost never does one party get the absolute majority of the votes. A majority, that's more than half, right? So more than 75 seats in the House of Representatives? Mieke: Helemaal goed. Minimaal 76 zetels. Exactly right. At least 76 seats. Because one party almost never achieves that, different parties have to start working together to get that majority together. Ah, and that group of parties that will work together, that's the coalition? Mieke: Juist! Exactly! Those parties will negotiate with each other. That's a long and sometimes difficult period. An 'informateur' is then appointed to lead the discussions. Bram: Een informateur? Wat doet die dan precies? An informateur? What exactly does that person do? They investigate which parties can best work together. It's a kind of mediator. It's all very carefully arranged. I believe that. Because in such a debate, they seem to agree on almost nothing. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. During negotiations, every party has to make some concessions. They have to find a compromise. Bram: Een compromis... een soort middenweg waar iedereen een beetje tevreden mee is? A compromise... a kind of middle ground where everyone is somewhat satisfied? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. They can't all implement their own plan 100%. The agreements they make are written down in a special document. Bram: En dat is... wacht, laat me raden... het regeerakkoord? And that is... wait, let me guess... the coalition agreement? Yes, you should have known that, haha! The coalition agreement states what the coalition intends to do for the next four years. Bram: En de partijen die niet meedoen? De minderheid? And the parties that don't participate? The minority? They form the opposition. They scrutinize the government and often disagree with the coalition's plans. That is also very important in a democracy. Okay, so those words are important, I think. 'The formation', that is the whole process of forming a government. Yes, and 'the coalition' is the group of parties that together form the government. To achieve that, they must 'negotiate' and reach a 'compromise'. And the result is the 'coalition agreement'. Bram: Duidelijk. Formatje, coalitie, onderhandelen, regeerakkoord. Ik schrijf ze op. Clear. Formation, coalition, negotiate, coalition agreement. I'll write them down. Just a tip for your exam. You often get a question like: 'Why do parties in the Netherlands form a coalition?' The correct answer always has to do with the fact that one party usually does not have 'the majority' of seats. Bram: Ah, oké. Dus het sleutelwoord in het antwoord is 'meerderheid'. Handig! Ah, okay. So the keyword in the answer is 'majority'. Handy! So if I get the question on the exam why parties have to cooperate, then the answer is: because together they need a majority to be able to govern. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Without a majority, no stable government can be formed. You need to remember that. Mieke: Goed, kom, we gaan een kopje koffie halen. Genoeg politiek voor nu. Alright, come on, let's get a cup of coffee. Enough politics for now. Bram: Haha, goed plan. Tot de volgende! Haha, good plan. Until next time!

Hij heeft een enorme map met documenten. Ziet er belangrijk uit. Look Mieke, that man over there at the counter. He has an enormous folder with documents. Looks important. Yes, I think he's here for a diploma evaluation. Many people who come to live and work in the Netherlands have to do that. Bram: Een diploma-waardering? A diploma evaluation? Oh, because his diploma is from another country? That you can't just use here? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's an important topic for the KNM exam. Let's talk about it for a bit. Okay, good idea. Suppose a friend of mine, Yusuf, was an engineer in his home country. He has a university degree. What will he do if he wants to work here? Then he has to have his foreign diploma evaluated. He will submit an application to an organization called IDW. That stands for International Diploma Evaluation. Bram: IDW, oké. En wat doen die precies? IDW, okay. And what exactly do they do? They will make a comparison. They look at Yusuf's diploma and compare it with the Dutch education system. They look at the level, the duration of the study, and the content. So they would say, for example: 'Your diploma is comparable to a Dutch HBO (higher professional education) degree in Technology'? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Then he receives an official document stating that. That's very important, because employers will ask for it when he applies for jobs. Bram: Logisch. En is die procedure ingewikkeld? Logical. And is that procedure complicated? Mieke: Het is vooral veel papierwerk. It's mainly a lot of paperwork. You have to provide proof. So you have to send copies of your diplomas and grade lists. Sometimes these also need to be officially translated into Dutch or English. Ah, that explains that man's big folder. And once your diploma has been evaluated, is it also immediately recognized? That depends. The evaluation says something about the level. But for some professions, like doctor, lawyer, or teacher, you need more. Then you have to have your profession recognized. Wait, so those are two different things? Diploma evaluation and professional recognition? Yes, that's an important difference. Diploma evaluation is the first step. Professional recognition is a separate, additional procedure for regulated professions. For an engineer, that's usually not necessary, but for a doctor, it is. Okay, so the words I need to remember are: the foreign diploma, the application to IDW, and the comparison they make. And sometimes also professional recognition. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And remember the word 'recognize'. That means the government or an employer says: yes, your diploma or profession is valid here. Just a tip for your exam. You sometimes get to see a short, simple letter from IDW. You don't have to understand everything, but you need to be able to find the conclusion. Look for the sentence: 'Your diploma is comparable to...' Ah, so focusing on the result of the comparison. That's a good tip. Okay, so if I get a question about what to do with a foreign diploma, the answer is: submit an application to IDW for a diploma evaluation. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Exactly right. They will then start the procedure to compare your diploma with a Dutch level. You should remember that. Great, learned something new again. I almost feel like a KNM expert already, haha. Mieke: Bijna, Bram. We gaan nog even door. Tot morgen! Almost, Bram. We'll continue for a bit. See you tomorrow! Bram: Doei! Bye!

Hij is al in de tachtig en zo ziek. Phew, I just came from my neighbor's place. He's already in his eighties and so sick. Mieke: Ach, wat vervelend. Hoe gaat het met hem? Oh, how awful. How is he doing? Bram: Niet goed. Not well. He can barely do anything anymore. We were talking a bit about the end of life. And then I wondered: how exactly does euthanasia work in the Netherlands? I know it's allowed, but beyond that... That's a heavy, but important topic. And also a typical KNM theme. Euthanasia is indeed permitted in the Netherlands, but there are very strict rules for it. That's called the Euthanasia Act. Yes, I thought so. A doctor can't just decide, right? It's not like the doctor says: "Well, it's better this way." Certainly not. Haha, no, that's absolutely not how it works. The most important thing is the patient's own wish. The patient must ask for it voluntarily and very clearly. No one else is allowed to do that for him or her. Okay, so the initiative must always lie with the patient. Even if someone is, for example, very confused? That's a good question. The patient must be mentally competent at the time of the request. That means he or she can consciously make the decision themselves. Bram: Helder. En dan die andere voorwaarden. Je zei iets over lijden? Clear. And then those other conditions. You said something about suffering? Mieke: Klopt. That's right. The doctor must determine that there is 'unbearable and hopeless suffering'. Unbearable and hopeless... what exactly does that mean in practice? Unbearable suffering means that the pain or sorrow is no longer tolerable for the patient. And hopeless means that there is no reasonable chance of improvement anymore. The patient will not get better. Bram: Dat is heftig. That's intense. And what if the doctor thinks that is indeed the case? What happens then? Then the doctor isn't done yet. He first had to investigate the situation very thoroughly. He couldn't just rely on his own judgment. There's a whole process. Huh, what else did he have to do then? He must always consult a second, independent doctor. Such a doctor is called a SCEN physician. That doctor also talks to the patient and reviews all medical information. Bram: Een SCEN-arts? A SCEN physician? Never heard of that. And that person has to agree with it then? Yes, that second doctor must also find that all conditions have been met. Only then may the euthanasia be performed. It's an extra check. Wow, that's much stricter than I thought. I always thought the Netherlands was very lenient about this. No, not at all. The law is precisely very specific to prevent abuse. It concerns a well-considered decision about the end of life. And you just mentioned those rules… the 'due care requirements'? Is that the official term? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. The due care requirements. Those are the conditions: the patient's wish, the unbearable and hopeless suffering, and the opinion of the second physician. Sometimes someone has also written an advance directive for the future. An advance directive, oh yes. That's a document stating your wishes, for when you can no longer express them yourself later? Mieke: Klopt. Dat kan ook heel belangrijk zijn. That's right. That can also be very important. Pay attention, for your KNM exam, the role of that second physician is really a key point. They often ask what a doctor must do. The answer is then almost always something like: consulting a second, independent physician. Remember the name SCEN physician. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about the conditions for euthanasia, then I need to remember: the patient wanted it themselves, the suffering was unbearable and hopeless, and a SCEN physician agreed. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. If you know those three things, you'll be fine. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt voor de uitleg, Miek. Understood. Thanks for the explanation, Miek. Mieke: Graag gedaan, Bram. Tot morgen! You're welcome, Bram. See you tomorrow!

Well, Yusuf has it all sorted out here. What peace and quiet in this new apartment, Mieke. Yes, right? A big difference from his previous place in the middle of the city. He hesitated for a long time, you know. To keep living in the city or to move to a village after all. Bram: Dat snap ik. Wat zijn nou eigenlijk de belangrijkste verschillen? Voor het KNM-examen dan, hè? I understand that. What are the main differences, actually? For the KNM exam, that is, right? Winkels, restaurants, bioscopen... alles is dichtbij. Haha, always with your exam on your mind. Well, look, the main difference is often the hustle and bustle versus the peace and quiet. In a big city like Amsterdam or Utrecht, there's always something to do. Shops, restaurants, cinemas... everything is close by. Yes, that's convenient. You grab your bike and you're there in no time. You don't have to get in the car for everything. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The downside is that it's always busy. Lots of traffic, lots of people on the street. And houses are often smaller and more expensive. You pay a lot for a small apartment without a balcony. And in a village, is that different? I grew up in Eindhoven, which is a city, of course. I don't know village life very well. Yes, in a village you often have more space and peace. People more often have a house with a garden. It's quieter there. Ideal if you have children, for example, because they can play safely outside. But then the distance to your work is often greater, isn't it? I can imagine that travel time increases significantly if you live in a village but work in the city. Mieke: Dat klopt. That's right. That's a significant disadvantage. You are more dependent on the car or public transport. There are also fewer amenities. For a large hospital or a university, you almost always have to go to the city. And what about the people? I sometimes hear that you're more anonymous in the city. That actually sounds nice sometimes. Yes, that's a good point. In the city, there's more anonymity. You often don't know your neighbors very well. Some people like that, that freedom. You can do what you want. Haha. And in a village? Does everyone watch what you do then? Haha. Well, it can sometimes feel that way. In a village, there's often a stronger community. People know each other, greet each other on the street, and there are many associations, like a football club. That can feel nice and safe, but some people find that social control stifling. So it really depends on what you personally find important. I understand now why Yusuf moved, because he was looking for more peace and quiet. I know he was really fed up with the hustle and bustle in the city center. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And that's something you need to understand for your exam: the trade-off between those pros and cons. Dat lijken me belangrijke woorden. Okay, so you're talking about 'anonymity' and 'community'. What exactly is the difference? Those seem like important words. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. Anonymity means that you don't know everyone and not everyone knows you. A community is precisely the opposite: a group of people who belong together and know each other. Also think of the words hustle and bustle and peace and quiet. Those are important contrasts to remember. For the KNM exam, you really need to remember this. They often give you a situation, for example: 'Fatima is looking for a house with a garden for her children. Where can she live better?' Then the answer is often 'in a village'. Ah, so you need to be able to apply the characteristics of the city and the village to a situation. Okay, so to summarize. If I get a question about living, I should think: a city is busy, has many amenities, but is also more expensive and more anonymous. A village offers more peace and space, but the distance to work is often greater. Mieke: Helemaal goed samengevat. Perfectly summarized. If you know that, you can answer most questions about it. Mieke: Goed, zullen we Yusuf even helpen met die laatste doos uitpakken? Alright, shall we help Yusuf unpack that last box? Bram: Ja, goed idee. Yes, good idea. Until next time and good luck with your studies!

Phew, what a building. So here at the UWV you apply for social assistance if you've lost your job? Haha, no Bram, that's a common mistake. We're here for something else. You apply for social assistance somewhere else. Bram: Oh? Oh? Where then? I thought all matters concerning work went through the UWV. No, you apply for social assistance at the municipality. It's really a last resort, a social safety net, if you no longer have any other income. At the municipality? Okay. And what exactly do you mean by 'last resort'? Well, it's the last option. You only get it if you have no other income. And therefore also no longer have the right to unemployment benefits (WW benefits) from the UWV. Ah, so if you've had a job before, you might get WW. And if those benefits have stopped, and you still haven't found anything... Exactly then. The government wants you to first try to find work yourself. Social assistance is for people who don't have enough money to live on. It supplements your income up to the social minimum. The social minimum... that's the smallest amount you need for rent and food and so on? Yes, that's right. The government has calculated what you minimally need. But there's another important condition: you also can't have too many assets. Bram: Vermogen? Assets? Wait a minute, what's the difference with income? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. For your exam, you need to know this well. Income is the money you receive periodically, such as salary. Assets are what you own. Think of savings, a car, or your own house. Okay, so if I have twenty thousand euros in my savings account, I won't get social assistance? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. Then the municipality says: first use your own savings. There's a limit, but it's not that high. Bram: Duidelijk. Dus geen inkomen, en bijna geen vermogen. Krijg je dat geld dan zomaar? Clear. So no income, and almost no assets. Do you just get that money? No, something is expected of you. That's called the reciprocal obligation. You must, for example, actively apply for jobs. The rules for this are in the Participation Act. Bram: De Participatiewet. Klinkt serieus. Dus je moet meedoen, participeren. The Participation Act. Sounds serious. So you have to participate, take part. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. The municipality can also ask you to do volunteer work. You have to show that you're doing your best to get back to work or to contribute something. And how long can you have such benefits? Is there an end date? No, in principle not. As long as you meet the conditions and adhere to the rules, you can keep the benefits. But the goal, of course, is for you to find a job again as soon as possible. Bram: Ja, logisch. Yes, that makes sense. Because it's not a lot of money, I assume? No, it's really the minimum. It's called the social minimum for a reason. It's a safety net, not a gravy train. Pay attention, here's a tip for the exam. You often get a short case study about a person. For example: 'Ali has lost his job. He is not entitled to unemployment benefits. He has 8000 euros in savings.' And then the question is: is he entitled to social assistance? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You then have to look at his income and his assets. Many people forget about the assets. Okay, so I need to remember: you apply for social assistance benefits at the municipality, not at the UWV. And it's the last option if you have no income and little assets. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. And don't forget the quid pro quo. That is also an important part of the Participation Act. Bram: Helder. Dankjewel. Nu snap ik het verschil. Kom, wij zijn hier klaar. Clear. Thank you. Now I understand the difference. Come on, we're done here. Mieke: Ja, laten we gaan. Yes, let's go. Until next time and good luck with your studies!

Wow, hier staat iets over 2001... Look Mieke, here in the library they have a kind of timeline about Dutch history. Wow, there's something here about 2001... Mieke: Oh, laat eens zien. Oh, let me see. Ah, that's about gay marriage. That's a very important moment. And also an important topic for the KNM exam. Echt? Waren wij de allereersten? Yes, it says 'The Netherlands, the first country in the world where gay marriage was introduced'. Really? Were we the very first? Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. On April 1, 2001, the law became official. From that day on, two men or two women were allowed to marry each other. Wait a minute, so before that, it wasn't possible at all? How did people of the same sex who wanted to be together manage then? Well, marriage wasn't possible then. There was something like a registered partnership, which had already existed for a few years. But a marriage, with exactly the same rights and obligations, that was new. The law that made that possible was really a big step for equality. Okay. And the ceremony, is that different from a marriage between a man and a woman? No, not at all. The ceremony is exactly the same. Usually in the city hall, with an official, witnesses, and of course the vows. So a man then has a husband, and a woman a wife. Or a woman also has a wife. Haha, the words are the same. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The law states that a marriage is between two persons, regardless of gender. The rights and obligations that come with it are equal for everyone. That is the core of the law. That's actually quite special that the Netherlands was the first country in that. I vaguely knew that, but didn't remember it was already in 2001. That was a long time ago already. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. And it shows how important equality is in the Netherlands. The idea that everyone can choose who they love. That right to self-determination is a core value you need to know for your exam. Bram: En was iedereen het daar toen meteen mee eens, in 2001? And did everyone agree with that right away, in 2001? No, certainly not. There was a lot of discussion about it. Some political parties and religious groups were against it. But the majority of the politicians who make the laws voted for it. Ah, so it was a political debate. And how is that now? Is it completely normal now? Yes, now it's very normal. Acceptance has grown enormously. If you go to a city hall for a ceremony now, you see all sorts of different couples. It's a part of society that we take for granted. Bram: Interessant. Interesting. So the law has also helped to change people's opinions, do you think? I think so. A law that says 'this is equal' helps people to see it that way too. It's a strong signal that the government sends. Okay, just for clarity. You're talking about a husband and a wife. Is there a difference in how you use those words? Mieke: Nee, niet echt. 'Echtgenoot' is mannelijk, 'echtgenote' is vrouwelijk. No, not really. 'Echtgenoot' is masculine, 'echtgenote' is feminine. But in practice, many people just use 'partner'. And also remember same-sex marriage itself, that's the term you'll see on the exam. An important tip for your exam: they often ask for the year. So remember well: 2001. They might give you options like 1995, 2001, or 2010. The question you get is often very direct. Okay, so if I get a question about same-sex marriage, I need to remember: the Netherlands was the first country in the world, and the law is from the year 2001. And the rights are exactly the same. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Absolutely correct. That's the core you need to know. Bram: Goed, die staat genoteerd. Zullen we nu een kopje koffie halen? Good, that's noted. Shall we get a cup of coffee now? Mieke: Goed idee. Tot de volgende keer! Good idea. Until next time!

Phew, it's intense here in the Resistance Museum. All those stories about the occupation and the Second World War... It really makes you quiet. Mieke: Zeker. Definitely. It shows how important freedom is, and what it's like when another country is in charge of you. Bram: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. And that reminds me of another period in our past where the Netherlands had that very role. Colonialism. That's a good point. That's also an important KNM topic: the other side of the coin of our history. In primary school, I mainly learned about the VOC, the ships, and the spice trade. The Golden Age. But that's not the whole story, is it? No, absolutely not. The Netherlands had colonies for a long time, such as Indonesia, Suriname, and the Antillean islands. And that Dutch rule was often very negative for the people who already lived there. Bram: Huh, 'heerschappij'? Huh, 'rule'? You just mean that the Netherlands was in charge? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And under that rule, there was a lot of exploitation. The Netherlands extracted a lot of valuable raw materials from those countries. Think of coffee, sugar, tobacco, and rubber. Okay, but the local people worked for it, didn't they? Did they get paid? Often they were forced to work, for very little or even no money. And if there was protest against Dutch power, violence was often used. Oh yes, that's quite different from the romantic stories about ships and trade. And then, of course, there was also slavery. Mieke: Jazeker. Indeed. Slavery is truly a dark chapter in the Dutch past. Hundreds of thousands of people were taken from Africa and had to work under terrible conditions on the plantations in Suriname and on the islands. They were treated as property. Bram: Dat is echt verschrikkelijk. That's truly terrible. I understand why there's increasingly more attention for it now. The influence of that time is still there, of course. Yes, that's why there's now a lot of criticism of how we used to look at that period. It's important that we know the whole story, not just the positive aspects for the Netherlands. Okay, so those words you used are important, I think. 'Colonialism', 'rule', and 'exploitation'. Mieke: Klopt. Correct. 'Colonialism' is the system where a country governs other territories. 'Rule' means having the power or control. And 'exploitation' means you take advantage of people or a country for your own profit. Bram: Helder. Die moet ik even opschrijven. Vooral 'uitbuiting' klinkt heel negatief. Clear. I should write that down. Especially 'exploitation' sounds very negative. It is indeed. Just a tip for your exam: remember that there is criticism of the colonial past. If you get a question about this topic, it often concerns the negative aspects. Bram: Welke woorden moet ik dan herkennen? Which words should I recognize then? Think of the words we just mentioned, and especially 'slavery' and 'violence'. Those are often the key points in the exam questions about this. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about the Dutch colonial past, I need to know that it wasn't just about trade and wealth, but also, specifically, about exploitation, violence, and slavery. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You need to know that there is criticism and why that criticism exists. That's what they're testing. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt weer, Mieke. Laten we nog even verder kijken hier. Understood. Thanks again, Mieke. Let's take another look here. Mieke: Goed plan. En jij succes met studeren. Tot de volgende keer! Good plan. And good luck with your studying. Until next time!

Wow, look at that enormous list of parties. There are so many this year. I always wonder how they can ever fairly distribute those seats in the House of Representatives. Haha, yes, that's a question I often get from my students. That has everything to do with our electoral system. One of the most important topics for the KNM exam. Oh really? A friend of mine, Yusuf, recently asked: why do those very small parties in the Netherlands also get a seat in parliament? He didn't understand it at all. That's a very good question. In many countries, you have to get a high percentage of the votes, for example 5 percent. Not in the Netherlands. We have 'proportional representation'. Bram: Evenredige vertegenwoordiging. Dat is een lang woord, haha. Proportional representation. That's a long word, haha. Indeed, but the idea is quite simple. 'Proportional' means that it's in proportion. The system works like this: if a party gets 10 percent of all votes, then they also get approximately 10 percent of the seats. Ah, so if there are 150 seats in the House of Representatives, then that party gets 15 seats. That sounds logical. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's how it's arranged. It's seen as a very fair system, because every vote counts. Even the vote for a small, new party. But is there no minimum at all? A kind of threshold you have to reach? Yes, there is one, but it's very low in the Netherlands. We call that the 'electoral threshold'. That is the minimum percentage of votes a party must get to obtain a seat. Bram: De kiesdrempel. Oké, die had ik moeten weten. En hoe hoog is die dan? The electoral threshold. Okay, I should have known that. And how high is it then? The electoral threshold is the number of votes needed for one seat. That is 1/150th of all votes. That is approximately 0.67 percent. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? Only that low? So a party with less than that percentage just gets zero seats, even if they have tens of thousands of votes? Mieke: Klopt. That's right. Then they haven't met the electoral threshold. But if they are just above it, they get their first seat. Sometimes after the distribution, there are still votes and seats left over. Those are then also distributed. We call that a 'residual seat'. Phew, a residual seat. That's interesting. So the basic idea is: your vote isn't easily lost, even if you vote for a small party. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's the big advantage. A disadvantage can be that many small parties enter the House. Then it's sometimes difficult to form a government. Yes, then you have to cooperate with many different parties. You often see that happening indeed. Look, for your exam, a few words here are really important. Firstly, 'proportional representation'. That's the name of the entire system. Bram: Oké, die noteer ik. Evenredige vertegenwoordiging. En die drempel, de 'kiesdrempel'. Okay, I'll note that down. Proportional representation. And that threshold, the 'electoral threshold'. Yes, the electoral threshold. And it's important to know that it's very low in the Netherlands. And the verb 'to distribute': the seats are fairly distributed based on the percentage of votes. Bram: En die overgebleven zetel was een... 'restzetel'? And that remaining seat was a... 'residual seat'? Mieke: Precies! Heel goed. Exactly! You might not need to actively use that term, but it's good if you recognize it. Very good. A tip for the exam: you often get a question like: 'A political party gets 2% of the votes. Approximately how many seats does this party get in the House of Representatives?' Ah, and then you need to know that 2% of 150 seats... is 3 seats. You don't need to do complex calculations, but you need to understand the principle of the percentage. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's about showing that you understand the system. Okay, so if I see this on the exam, I need to remember: in the Netherlands, the seats are fairly distributed. The percentage of votes is approximately equal to the percentage of seats. That is called proportional representation. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely right. That is the core you need to remember for your KNM exam. Bram: Top, weer wat geleerd vandaag. Ik snap het nu een stuk beter. Great, learned something new today. I understand it a lot better now. Mieke: Goed zo! Succes met verder leren en tot morgen. Good job! Good luck with further studying and see you tomorrow.

Say Mieke, I spoke to my friend Jeroen yesterday. Since his divorce, things have been quite difficult at home with the children. He mentioned a 'family coach'. I just nodded, but I actually have no idea what that exactly is. Ah, a family coach. Yes, that's a good topic for KNM. Many people don't know exactly what they do. It's actually professional help for a family when there are problems. Bram: Wat voor problemen dan? Gewoon ruzie over wie de afwas doet? What kind of problems then? Just arguments about who does the dishes? Haha, no, usually it goes a bit deeper. Think of a child with very difficult behavior, or parents who, after a divorce, no longer know how to co-parent effectively. Or if there's constant arguing and stress in the house. Bram: Oké, dus serieuze zaken. En wat doet zo'n coach dan? Komt die dan thuis en zegt: 'Luister! Stop met ruzie maken!'? Okay, so serious matters. And what does such a coach do then? Do they come home and say: 'Listen! Stop arguing!'? No, quite the opposite. A family coach doesn't give commands, like 'Eat your plate clean!' or 'Put on your coat!'. That's the old way of parenting. A coach usually comes to the family's home to see what exactly is happening. Bram: Die kijkt gewoon mee? Dat lijkt me een beetje ongemakkelijk. They just observe? That seems a bit uncomfortable to me. Perhaps at first. But it helps to see the real problem. Afterwards, the coach has a conversation with the parents, and often with the children too. Together they look for a solution. So the coach doesn't come up with the solution, but helps the family find a solution themselves? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The goal is for the family to learn new skills. For example: how do you talk to each other without shouting? How do you make clear rules? The coach helps the family become stronger, so they can manage it themselves in the future. Bram: En waar vind je zo'n coach? Bel je dan gewoon een nummer? And where do you find such a coach? Do you just call a number? Usually, that goes through the municipality, or through the district team or the Centre for Youth and Family. You can state your request for help there. They then look at which help fits best. Often, that is a family coach. That's actually well-arranged. That you don't have to figure everything out by yourself when things are difficult. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. It's important to know that such help is available in the Netherlands. Okay, so let me just check if I understand the words. The 'request for help' is thus the request for help from the 'family'. The 'family coach' then searches with them for a 'solution' to the 'problem' with, for example, a child's 'behavior'. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. You often see those words when this topic comes up. Especially 'family coach', 'problem', 'solution', and 'request for help' are important to know for your exam. Pay attention for your exam. You often get a short situation described. For example: 'A family argues a lot. The parents are tired and the children don't listen.' The question then is: 'What is a good first step?'. And then the answer is something like 'talking to a family coach' or 'contacting the district team'? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. Calling the government directly or involving the police is almost never the right answer for parenting problems. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about a family with serious, structural problems, then a family coach is an appropriate form of help. They help the family to learn skills themselves. Mieke: Dat is de kern. Je hebt het perfect samengevat. Dat is wat je moet onthouden. That's the core. You've summarized it perfectly. That's what you need to remember. Bram: Top, weer wat geleerd. Ik ga het aan Jeroen vertellen. Tot morgen! Great, learned something again. I'll tell Jeroen. See you tomorrow! Mieke: Goed zo. Succes met studeren en tot morgen! Good job. Good luck with your studies and see you tomorrow!

Phew, it's so busy here. And Mieke, do you hear that too? I hear almost more English than Dutch around me. Haha, yes, that's right. We're in the university library, right? Many courses nowadays are entirely in English. Bram: Echt waar? Waarom is dat eigenlijk? Vroeger was alles toch gewoon Nederlands? Really? Why is that, actually? In the past, everything was just Dutch, wasn't it? Certainly, but the world has become more international. And Dutch universities are very popular with international students. Bram: Ah, logisch. Ah, that makes sense. So then they offer an English-taught program, so that students from all over the world can come and study here. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. For many programs, the language of instruction is now English. That means all classes, books, and exams are in English. Okay. And can anyone just enroll for that? No, it's not that easy. There are always admission requirements. For example, you need a diploma of the right level. An admission requirement... so those are the rules to be allowed to participate? Mieke: Juist. Right. And for an English-taught program, the most important requirement, of course, is that your English is good enough. Bram: En hoe controleert de universiteit dat? Gaan ze je dan bellen? And how does the university check that? Are they going to call you then? Mieke: Haha, nee. Haha, no. Usually you have to take an official language test. For example, the IELTS test or the TOEFL test. That's an exam with which you prove your English level. Oh yes, I've heard of that. So almost every international student who wants to study here first takes such a language test. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. If you pass the test and your diploma is good, then you can apply. And if you are admitted, you will pay tuition fees. The tuition fees, yes. That's the amount you pay for your studies. Is that the same for everyone? No, and that's an important point to know. For students from the European Union, the tuition fees are much lower than for students from outside the EU. Wow, I didn't know that. That's a big difference. So if you follow an English program here, you don't need to know Dutch? For the study itself, no. But for daily life here, it's certainly very useful. You go grocery shopping, you look for a room... Then knowing Dutch is helpful. Bram: Ja, dat snap ik wel. Anders is het ook zo ongezellig. Yes, I understand that. Otherwise, it's also so unsociable. What's important to remember for your exam are the words 'the admission requirement' and 'the language of instruction'. Okay, so 'the admission requirement' is the condition, like a diploma or a language test. And 'the language of instruction'? That is the language of the lessons. If the language of instruction is English, the entire study program is in English. Just a tip for your exam. You often get a question about an international student. Remember well that an official language test is almost always a mandatory admission requirement for an English-taught study program. That's a good one. So not just a diploma, but also that test. So, to recap: if I get a question, I need to know that for an English-taught study program, you often have to take a special language test. That is an important admission requirement. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And don't forget the difference in tuition fees between EU and non-EU students. They often ask about that too. Bram: Duidelijk! Bedankt weer, Mieke. Clear! Thanks again, Mieke. Mieke: Graag gedaan. Tot de volgende keer! You're welcome. Until next time!

Say Mieke, I was just reading the news. There was something about a legal amendment... it was about abortion. I always thought I knew how it worked, but apparently not anymore. Ah, I understand that. The rules changed a few years ago. That's an important topic, also for the KNM exam. Shall we go over it? Bram: Ja, graag. Yes, please. Because I thought there was always a kind of mandatory waiting period. That's right, that was the case. Look, in the Netherlands, a woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy. We call that an abortion. If a woman has an unwanted pregnancy, the first step is usually a consultation with the GP. They can provide information about all options. Okay, so you go to the doctor first. And then? If the woman decides to have an abortion, she is referred to a special abortion clinic. And then you get to the point you mentioned: the reflection period. Bram: Ja, precies! Die bedenktijd. Je moest toch vijf dagen wachten? Yes, exactly! That reflection period. You had to wait five days, right? Indeed, the old law stated that you had to have a mandatory five-day reflection period between the first consultation and the abortion itself. That was to make sure it was the right choice. Bram: Aha. En dat is dus veranderd? Aha. And that has changed? Yes, since 2023, that mandatory reflection period has been abolished. The law has been amended. Now the woman decides together with the doctor whether a reflection period is needed, and for how long. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? So it's no longer mandatory? I didn't know that at all. That's quite a big change. So if a woman had already made her decision, she couldn't be helped immediately before? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. She had to wait, even if she was sure what she wanted. Now the idea is: the choice lies with the woman herself. She can best assess whether she needs more time for her decision. That actually sounds logical. And until when is an abortion allowed in the Netherlands? An abortion is allowed up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. And the costs are reimbursed by health insurance, if you live in the Netherlands and are insured. Okay, that's clear information. That change in the law is an important detail. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. What's important is to know the words well: you have 'pregnancy'. If it's 'unwanted', you can make the 'choice' for an 'abortion'. And that 'reflection period' is therefore the time to think about your 'decision'. I knew that word, but not in this context. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The abortion itself takes place in a special 'clinic'. You often encounter these words when discussing this topic. A tip for your exam: pay close attention to questions about that reflection period. A question could be: 'Is there a mandatory reflection period for an abortion in the Netherlands?'. The correct answer is now 'no'. Ah, that's a good tip. So they test if you know the new law, not the old one. Okay, so just to summarize: if I get a question about the rules for abortion, I need to remember that the woman herself has the choice and that a mandatory waiting period is no longer in the law. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. The doctor and the woman decide together if time is needed for reflection. That's the key. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt weer, Mieke. Understood. Thanks again, Mieke. I've learned something new about my own country again, haha. Mieke: Graag gedaan, Bram. Tot de volgende keer! You're welcome, Bram. Until next time!

Deze straat is zó anders dan vroeger. Ik herken het bijna niet meer. Wow, Mieke, look. This street is so different from how it used to be. I barely recognize it anymore. Yes, that's right. A lot has happened here in recent years. All new coffee shops and expensive stores. Bram: Precies. Exactly. What's actually going on here? This is a classic example of something, isn't it? Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. For your KNM exam, this is a good example of gentrification. Bram: Gentrificatie? Gentrification? I've heard that word before, but what exactly does it mean? Mieke: Nou, kijk. Well, look. This used to be a fairly cheap neighborhood. The houses were old and not that expensive. Bram: Ja, dat weet ik nog. Een vriend van mij woonde hier. Hij betaalde heel weinig huur. Yes, I remember that. A friend of mine lived here. He paid very little rent. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. But the neighborhood is close to the city center. That's attractive. So new people came to live there, the newcomers. Often people with a higher income. Okay, and they buy a house and completely renovate it? Yes, that's the next step. That upgrading of the houses makes the whole neighborhood look better. And that's positive in itself. Bram: Maar er is een 'maar', hè? Ik voel het al. But there's a 'but', right? I can feel it already. Haha, yes. Because the neighborhood becomes more popular, house prices rise enormously. And also the rent for the homes that are still there. Ah, and then... then the people who already lived there can no longer afford it. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. The original residents often have to move, because the rent becomes too high or because their house is sold. So the whole atmosphere of the neighborhood changes. And other shops and facilities also appear. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The old local supermarket disappears and an organic store takes its place. That's a typical change. Bram: Dat is best heftig eigenlijk. That's quite intense, actually. If you've lived here your whole life and suddenly you have to leave. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. It's a process with two sides. The neighborhood becomes nicer and safer, but not everyone can benefit from it. Okay, so the most important words to remember are 'gentrification', that's the whole process... Yes, and also 'upgrading', which means that the quality and value of the houses increase. And the difference between the 'original inhabitants' and the 'newcomers'. That's quite clear. Pay close attention during the exam. You often get a short text about a neighborhood. If you read that house prices are rising, new, more expensive amenities are coming, and old residents have to leave, then the question is often: 'What is this process called?'. Okay, so if I get a question like that, I need to know that the combination of rising prices and the departure of the original residents points to gentrification. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. That's the core you need to remember. The change in the neighborhood is not positive for everyone. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt voor de les, haha. Zullen we nu zelf zo'n dure koffie gaan drinken? Clear. Thanks for the lesson, haha. Shall we go get one of those expensive coffees ourselves now? Mieke: Vooruit dan maar. Tot de volgende keer! Alright then. Until next time!

Hey Mieke, everything good? Say, I saw that Yusuf's spot is empty. Is he not here today? Mieke: Nee, klopt. No, that's right. He got sick last week. He reported himself sick, but luckily he'll be back on Monday. Oh, good to hear. I suddenly wondered, how does that actually work in the Netherlands? Do you just keep getting paid if you haven't worked for a week? Mieke: Jazeker. Yes, indeed. That's an important topic for the KNM exam. Shall we list that out? Bram: Graag! Ik ben het helemaal kwijt. Gladly! I've completely forgotten it. Look, if you have a job and you get sick, you naturally first have to report yourself sick to your employer. Yusuf did that too. Bram: Oké, logisch. En dan? Je salaris stopt dan niet, toch? Okay, logical. And then? Your salary doesn't stop then, right? No, absolutely not. In the Netherlands, we have the 'continued payment of wages during illness' law. That means your employer is obliged to continue paying your wages if you are sick. Bram: Ah, loondoorbetaling. En hoe lang is dat dan? Een paar weken? Ah, continued payment of wages. And how long is that then? A few weeks? No, much longer. Your employer must continue to pay your wages for a maximum of two years. In the first year, you often get 100% of your wages, and in the second year, at least 70%. That percentage can vary per company. Bram: Twee jaar? Wauw, echt? Two years? Wow, really? I thought the government took over after a while. That's a common mistake. Only if you are still long-term sick after two years might you be eligible for benefits from the UWV. But the first two years are the responsibility of your employer. And what if your boss doesn't believe you? Can he just say: 'just come to work'? No, he can't. If you are sick for longer, the employer involves an occupational physician. That is an independent doctor who assesses your situation. An occupational physician, oh yes. And do they also help with returning to work? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The occupational physician, together with you and your employer, makes a plan for your recovery and re-integration. The goal is always to get you back to work in a good way. Bram: Dat is wel goed geregeld eigenlijk. Ik heb dat nooit zo beseft. That's actually well-arranged. I never really realized that. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. The entire system is based on the Sickness Benefits Act, which ensures that people don't end up without income if they get sick. For your exam, pay attention to a few words. You often hear 'continued payment of wages', 'occupational physician', and 're-integration'. Okay, so continued payment of wages is the salary you get when you're sick. The occupational physician is the work doctor. And re-integration is the plan to start working again? Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely right. Those three words often appear in questions about work and illness. An important tip for the KNM exam: remember who pays your salary. They often ask: 'You've been sick for a year. Who pays your wages?'. The correct answer is always 'your employer'. Not the UWV and not the municipality. That's a good point. So for the first two years, it's always the employer. Bram: Dus, even samenvatten voor mezelf. So, just to summarize for myself. If I get a question on the exam about being sick and salary, I need to remember: the employer continues to pay your wages for a maximum of two years. That's called continued payment of wages. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. If you remember that, you can definitely answer that question correctly. Your employer and the company doctor also help you with your recovery. Bram: Top, dankjewel. Weer wat geleerd over mijn eigen land, haha. Great, thank you. Learned something new about my own country again, haha. Mieke: Graag gedaan! You're welcome! Good luck with studying and until next time.

En al die vlaggen! Wat is er aan de hand? Het is zo kleurrijk. Wow, what a crowd here. And all those flags! What's going on? It's so colorful. Mieke: Haha, kijk om je heen! Dit is een Pride-evenement. Een feest voor de LHBTIQ+-gemeenschap. Haha, look around you! This is a Pride event. A celebration for the LHBTIQ+ community. Oh yes, of course! I should have known with all those rainbow flags. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's a celebration of diversity and acceptance. Everyone here celebrates that you can be who you are and love whoever you want. It's a celebration, but I also sometimes hear that it's a protest. How does that work? Mieke: Dat klopt. That's right. The laws in the Netherlands are good, but it's also about social acceptance. That everyone feels safe and accepted everywhere. Unfortunately, that's not always and everywhere the case yet. Hm, okay. And LHBTIQ+... those letters, I always mix them up. Can you explain that again? Certainly, no problem. It stands for Lesbian, Homosexual, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer. The plus stands for all other identities and orientations that exist. Phew, that's quite a list. But it's good that there's a name for it. And that rainbow flag you see everywhere, does that belong to this whole community? Mieke: Ja, klopt. Yes, that's right. The rainbow flag is the international symbol for the LHBTIQ+ community. Together, the colors symbolize the great diversity within the community. That's actually quite interesting. And what about rights in the Netherlands? Is that something that's asked on the KNM exam? Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. Rights are a very important part of Dutch values. The most important value is equality. The law prohibiting discrimination is very clear. That's Article 1 of the Constitution. So you shouldn't be treated differently because of your sexual orientation. Mieke: Precies. Of je genderidentiteit. En dat brengt ons bij het huwelijk. Weet je hoe dat hier geregeld is? Exactly. Or your gender identity. And that brings us to marriage. Do you know how that's arranged here? Uh... I think it's allowed? Can people who love someone of the same sex just get married here? Mieke: Ja, absoluut. Yes, absolutely. And this is a very important fact for your KNM exam: in 2001, the Netherlands was the very first country in the world where marriage was opened up to people of the same sex. Bram: 2001, echt waar? 2001, really? Wow, that was more than twenty years ago. I should have known that. So people can openly express their relationships here. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The right to openly be yourself is very important. That doesn't mean there are never problems, but the law protects you. Okay, you just used the words 'orientation' and 'identity'. Are they the same? I sometimes find those words a bit confusing. Bijvoorbeeld man, vrouw, of non-binair. Good question, because they are often confused. No, they are not the same. Your orientation is about who you fall in love with. Your identity is about who you are, how you feel about yourself. For example, man, woman, or non-binary. Ah, okay. And the acceptance we're talking about, does that apply to both? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. Acceptance of who you are and of who you love. And a tip for your exam: you often see a picture of the rainbow flag. The question then is: 'What does this flag mean in the Netherlands?' The correct answer always has to do with the rights and acceptance of the LHBTIQ+ community. Okay, just to recap. If I see a rainbow flag on the exam, I need to remember that it stands for diversity and the LHBTIQ+ community. And that Dutch law protects their rights, such as the right to marry since 2001. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely correct. That's the core you need to know. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt weer, Mieke. Zullen we verder lopen? Understood. Thanks again, Mieke. Shall we walk on? Mieke: Ja, doen we. Tot de volgende keer! Yes, let's. Until next time!

Mieke, look at that painting. What an enormous ship! You don't see those sailing anymore nowadays, haha. No, certainly not. This is a ship of the VOC. A very important topic for Dutch history and for your KNM exam. Bram: Oh ja, de VOC. Dat heb ik wel eens gehoord. Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. Maar wat was dat ook alweer precies? Oh yes, the VOC. I've heard of that. United East India Company. But what exactly was that again? The VOC was a very large and powerful trading company in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was founded in 1602. Bram: Oké, een handelscompagnie. Dus ze kochten en verkochten spullen? Okay, a trading company. So they bought and sold goods? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The VOC ships sailed on a special route all the way to Asia. That was a very long and dangerous journey, which sometimes lasted as long as eight months. Bram: Acht maanden? Wauw. Eight months? Wow. And what did they go there to get in Asia? Mieke: Vooral specerijen. Mainly spices. Think of pepper, nutmeg, and cloves. These were very rare in Europe and therefore very expensive. The VOC made enormous profits from them. Aha, so it was all about the money. And you also had the WIC, right? What was the difference with that? Very good that you mention that. That's an important difference. The VOC sailed to the east, to Asia. The WIC, the West India Company, sailed to the west: to Africa and America. Okay, so different directions. And the WIC traded in other things then? Mieke: Ja. Yes. Unfortunately, the WIC was mainly known for the slave trade. They brought people from Africa to America to work on plantations there. That is a very dark page in our history. Bram: Dat is het zeker. En de VOC, was die wel... 'netjes'? It certainly is. And the VOC, was it... 'decent'? Mieke: Niet altijd. Not always. They also used a lot of violence to protect their trade and to take over territories. This is how the first Dutch colonies in Asia were formed, such as Dutch East Indies, present-day Indonesia. So they were not only traders, but also a kind of army. Yes, you could say that. The VOC had a monopoly on trade in Asia. That's an important word to know. Bram: Een monopolie? Wat betekent dat precies? Dat ze de enigen waren? A monopoly? What exactly does that mean? That they were the only ones? Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. The VOC was the only Dutch trading company allowed to trade in Asia. This way they could determine the price of the spices themselves and make a lot of profit. No one else was allowed to use that route. Clever, but also a bit unfair. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. For your exam, it's important to remember the difference between the VOC and the WIC well. They often ask where the VOC traded. The answer is always: Asia. Okay, so that's a typical exam question. So, just to recap for myself: if I get a question about the VOC, I need to remember: seventeenth century, ships to Asia, and trade in spices. And the WIC was America and Africa. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. If you know that, you're good for this topic. Mieke: Goed, zullen we verder lopen? Alright, shall we walk on? There's still much more to see here. Bram: Ja, leuk! Tot de volgende. Yeah, great! See you next time.

Wow, Mieke, look. What enormous paper! I didn't remember the ballot paper was so big. I feel like a child with a coloring page. Mieke: Haha, ja, het is altijd even indrukwekkend. Haha, yes, it's always quite impressive. But it's a good sign, it means we have a lot to choose from. These are the elections for the House of Representatives. Bram: Ja, dat is waar. Maar hoe werkt het ook alweer? Er staan zó veel namen op. Moet ik alles lezen? Yes, that's true. But how does it work again? There are so many names on it. Do I have to read everything? No, luckily not. Look, it's organized in columns. Each column is a political party. Usually, a voter already knows which party he or she wants to vote for. Okay, so I first look for the party of my choice. And then? There are all names underneath. Those are the candidates of that party. The person at the top is the party leader. Many people vote for that person. But you can vote for anyone on the list. Ah, so if I prefer another candidate, I can also vote for number 5 or number 10? Mieke: Precies. Dat is je stemrecht. Jij beslist. Exactly. That is your right to vote. You decide. Once you've made your choice, you go to one of those polling booths over there. There you color the box next to your candidate's name red. And then what? Then I fold up this enormous thing and it goes into that big box over there? Stemmen is geheim in Nederland. Niemand mag jouw keuze beïnvloeden. Yes, that's the ballot box. You fold your ballot paper so that no one can see what you voted for. Voting is secret in the Netherlands. No one may influence your choice. That's well organized. And this happens once every four years? For the House of Representatives, yes. There are also other elections, for example for the municipality or for Europe, but the national elections are the biggest. And when do we know who won? Late tonight there will be a preliminary result. The votes are counted after the polling stations close at nine in the evening. The official result takes a few days. Logisch eigenlijk. Okay, so just for clarity: this big paper is the ballot paper. And that box it goes into is the ballot box. Logical, actually. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And you are the voter, and the person you vote for is the candidate. You really need to know those words for the exam. Bram: Helder. Kiezer, kandidaat, stembiljet, stembus. Ik schrijf ze op. Clear. Voter, candidate, ballot paper, ballot box. I'll write them down. What's important for your KNM exam: you sometimes see a picture of a ballot paper. The question is often: what is correct? Remember: you may only color one box red. Not two, and don't put a cross either. Only make one circle completely red. Ah, that's a good tip. So if I see a question about voting, I need to look for the answer with only one colored red circle. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That is the only correct way to vote. That's how your vote is declared valid. Bram: Oké, ik ga het stemhokje in. Ik voel me nu een expert. Okay, I'm going into the voting booth. I feel like an expert now. Mieke: Haha, succes! En tot morgen! Haha, good luck! And see you tomorrow!

I see all sorts of posters hanging. Mieke: Ja, klopt. Yes, that's right. Many municipalities have such a centre. It's an important place for parents and children. That's why it's also an important topic for the KNM exam. Okay, so what exactly happens here? I see a waiting room and some toys in the corner. Well, the CJG, as the abbreviation goes, helps parents with questions about their children's upbringing and health. From birth until they are eighteen years old. Bram: Achttien jaar? Eighteen years? That long? I thought this was only for babies. The well-baby clinic, right? That's a good point. The well-baby clinic is indeed part of this. That's for children from zero to four years old. That falls under youth healthcare. Ah, I used to go there too. For the shots and to measure and weigh. I remember that. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. But even if your child is older, you can come here. For example, if your child doesn't sleep well, or if your teenager argues with you a lot. Haha, that poster I just saw was for a course 'Dealing with teenagers'. So that's seriously a thing here. Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. You can take a course here, but you can also just walk in for a quick parenting question. They have a walk-in consultation hour for that. Bram: En met wie praat je dan? Met een dokter? And who do you talk to then? A doctor? Not necessarily. Often you talk to a youth nurse or a pedagogist. That's an expert in the field of upbringing. Bram: Een pedagoog. Klinkt duur. Wat kost dat dan, zo'n gesprek? A pedagogist. Sounds expensive. What does a conversation like that cost? Mieke: Niks! Nothing! That's the beauty of it. The help from the CJG is free for all parents in the municipality. The municipality pays for this. Wow, that's well organized. So if I'm worried because my child won't listen... For example, I say 'Eat your plate empty!' and he doesn't do it. Then I can come here? Yes, exactly for those kinds of questions. 'Put on your coat!' and nothing happens. A pedagogist can then give you tips on how to deal with that better. Bram: Interessant. Interesting. So it's not just medical, like at the well-baby clinic, but really for everyday problems. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. It's about a child's entire development: health, behavior, upbringing. Everything in one place. Okay, just checking if I understand the words correctly. So you have a parenting question, which is a question about upbringing. And for that, you go to a pedagogist, a parenting expert. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. And if you don't want an immediate appointment, you can go to the walk-in consultation hour. That's a time when you can just walk in without an appointment. Remember those words, you'll definitely encounter them. Bram: Opvoedvraag, pedagoog, inloopspreekuur. Genoteerd. Parenting question, pedagogue, walk-in consultation hour. Noted. Just a tip for your exam. Often you'll hear a short audio fragment. For example, a mother who says: 'My eight-year-old daughter has been so angry lately and doesn't listen.' The question then is: 'Where can this mother ask for advice?' And the answer is then of course the Centre for Youth and Family. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Or sometimes it says 'the CJG'. It's important that you recognize that abbreviation. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about a parent with a problem or a question about his or her child – whether it's a baby or a teenager – then the CJG is the place for free help and advice. That's the core. That's what you need to remember. The municipality provides support for parenting through the CJG. Bram: Helder. Goed, zullen we weer gaan? Ik voel me hier een beetje bekeken zonder kind, haha. Clear. Okay, shall we continue? I feel a bit watched here without a child, haha. Mieke: Haha, is goed. Haha, okay. Until next time and good luck with studying!

KNM Exam #168: "Hoe kun je vrijwillig Nederlands leren?" (How can you learn Dutch voluntarily?) — KNM exam preparation at A2 level. Al deze mensen gaan Nederlands leren. Hebben die allemaal inburgeringsplicht dan? Look, it's quite busy here in the language school canteen. All these people are going to learn Dutch. Do they all have an integration obligation then? No, certainly not everyone. Many people learn Dutch voluntarily here. They live and work here and simply find it important to speak the language. Ah, okay. I have a new colleague, from Spain. He doesn't have to integrate, but he would like to learn Dutch better. But such a course is quite expensive, right? That's possible, but there are many options. For example, he can ask for information at the municipality. The municipality often has funds, a kind of subsidy, for people who want to learn the language. Bram: Oh echt? Oh really? So the municipality also helps if it's not mandatory? I didn't know that at all. That's actually well-arranged. Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. And what's even more accessible: almost every municipality has a 'Taalhuis' (Language House). That's usually in the library. Bram: Een Taalhuis? Wat is dat precies? Een huis vol met boeken? A Taalhuis? What exactly is that? A house full of books? Mieke: Haha, nee. Haha, no. In a Taalhuis, you can get free help with the Dutch language. For example, you can practice on the computer, or read books in easy Dutch. Bram: En krijg je dan ook les? And do you get lessons there too? Not really a formal language lesson like here. But you can find a language coach there. That's a volunteer who helps you with speaking. For example, you'll go for a coffee together once a week and practice Dutch. Bram: Wacht even, een taalcoach? Wait a minute, a language coach? So a Dutch person who voluntarily helps you with the language? That's a super good idea! Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's very good to practice in real life in addition to your language lessons. That language coach will help you with that. It's informal and very effective. So my colleague just goes to the library and asks about the Taalhuis. And then he can get a language coach? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. The most important thing is motivation. If you really want to learn, there are many ways in the Netherlands to get help, even if it's not mandatory. Okay, so just for clarity: what's the difference between a 'language school' and a 'Taalhuis'? A language school, like where we are now, gives formal lessons that you usually pay for. A Taalhuis is often free, in the library, and is more for informal practice, for example with a language coach. Bram: Helder. Clear. So Taalhuis is an important word to remember. Yes, and for your exam you need to know: you often get a question with an email or a letter from the municipality. If you read the word 'Taalhuis' or 'library' in it, it's almost always about free help with learning Dutch. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about someone who wants to learn Dutch voluntarily... Then I need to know that they can go to the municipality or the Taalhuis in the library for help. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The municipality and the Taalhuis are the most important places for voluntary language support. You need to remember that. Bedankt Mieke! Great, I'll pass it on to my colleague right away. Thanks Mieke! Mieke: Graag gedaan. Succes ermee en tot morgen! You're welcome. Good luck with it and see you tomorrow!

Hey Mieke, you're already here. I thought I'd wait inside. I just saw this brochure about contraception. I must admit I wasn't exactly sure anymore how that works with the costs in the Netherlands. Ah, what a coincidence. A perfect topic for KNM. Contraception reimbursement is a classic exam question. Bram: Oh, echt? Nou, verfris mijn geheugen maar even. Oh, really? Well, refresh my memory then. I thought the pill for women was just free? That's a common mistake. It completely depends on age. That's the most important thing to remember for your exam. Bram: Oké, ik pak mijn denkbeeldige notitieblok erbij. Ik ben er klaar voor. Okay, I'll grab my imaginary notepad. I'm ready. Mieke: Haha. Nou, kijk. Haha. Well, look. For girls and women up to 18 years old, most contraception, like the pill, is fully reimbursed. That comes from the basic health insurance. So they don't have to pay anything, not even the deductible. Okay, that's clear and sounds fair too. And after that, does it get more expensive? Mieke: Niet meteen. Not immediately. From your 18th to your 21st birthday, it's also reimbursed by the basic health insurance. But... there's a 'but'. Bram: Natuurlijk. Er is altijd een 'maar' in Nederland. Laat me raden: het eigen risico? Of course. There's always a 'but' in the Netherlands. Let me guess: the deductible? Mieke: Precies! Exactly! You remembered from our previous conversations. The costs are first deducted from your deductible. Once that's used up, the insurer pays the rest. So if you have no other healthcare costs that year, you effectively pay for the pill yourself until your deductible is used up. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. And then the most important threshold: from 21 years old, you pay for everything yourself. Then it's no longer included in the basic health insurance package. Bram: Huh? Huh? So a 25-year-old woman has to pay for the pill entirely herself? That's quite expensive, isn't it? That can add up, yes. Unless she has taken out supplementary insurance that includes reimbursement for contraception. But of course, that costs an extra monthly premium. Phew, that's quite a system. A friend of mine once wanted an IUD, but she couldn't afford it then. I never understood that. So that was probably because she was already over 21. That's very possible. For an IUD or the pill, you always need a prescription from your GP. You can't just pick it up at the pharmacy. But the GP itself, that's free, isn't it? The consultation doesn't cost anything, does it? The GP consultation is indeed free; that doesn't fall under your deductible. But the medication or the IUD itself does, depending on your age. And a condom, of course not. You just buy those at the drugstore, without a prescription. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And there's never reimbursement for condoms. You always pay for those yourself, regardless of your age. Okay, so let's list the important words. 'The pill' and 'the IUD' are forms of 'contraception'. For 'reimbursement', your 'age' is crucial. Mieke: Heel goed. Very good. And don't forget 'the prescription'. That's the doctor's note you need to get the pill at the 'pharmacy'. A typical exam question is: 'A 19-year-old woman uses the pill. Is this reimbursed?' Many people choose 'yes', but the precise answer involves the deductible. So pay close attention to the details in the question. Okay, so for the exam I need to remember: up to 21 years old there is reimbursement from the basic insurance, but from 18 onwards the deductible applies. From 21 onwards you pay yourself, unless you have supplementary insurance. Mieke: Precies. Als je dat weet, zit je goed. Exactly. If you know that, you're all set. Mieke: Kom, we hebben hier lang genoeg gezeten. Zullen we naar buiten gaan? Come on, we've been sitting here long enough. Shall we go outside? Bram: Ja, laten we gaan. Tot morgen en succes met studeren allemaal! Yes, let's go. See you tomorrow and good luck with your studies everyone!

What a view you have here, Mieke! And what is that building over there across the square? The one with the big windows. Oh, that's the community center. I'm glad it's so close. That's nice for the neighborhood. Bram: Een buurthuis? A community center? Oh right. What exactly do people do there? That's a good question for your KNM class, haha. Haha, yes, definitely. Well, a community center is a place for all residents from the neighborhood. Everyone can go there. Okay, and what kind of things happen there? What kind of activities are there to do? Mieke: Van alles. All sorts of things. There's often a coffee morning for seniors, or a craft afternoon for children. Sometimes there are also language classes, or yoga classes. It really depends on the neighborhood. Zoiets? So it's a bit like a clubhouse for the neighborhood? Something like that? Mieke: Ja, zo kun je het zien. Veel activiteiten worden georganiseerd door een vrijwilliger. Yes, you could see it that way. Many activities are organized by a volunteer. A volunteer, what was that again? That's someone who does the work without getting paid for it, simply because he or she enjoys helping the neighborhood. Bram: Ah, juist. Ah, right. I remember from back then that there was a big playground next to our community center. I was always there as a child. Mieke: Precies! Exactly! A playground often belongs with it. The idea is that people meet each other. When parents are at the playground, they talk to each other. That's good for social cohesion. Bram: Sociale cohesie... wacht even, dat klinkt wel heel officieel. Social cohesion... wait a minute, that sounds very official. It's not that bad. It just means that people in a neighborhood feel connected to each other. That they know each other and help each other a bit if needed. Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En wie betaalt dat allemaal? Is zo'n buurthuis van de gemeente? Okay, clear. And who pays for all of that? Is such a community center owned by the municipality? Often the community center receives money from the municipality, that's called a subsidy. But the organization is usually a foundation. And so they are very dependent on the residents who help out. So if I have a good idea for an activity, can I organize it there? Yes, often! For example, if you want to start a cooking club for the neighborhood, you can often use a space in the community center. You just have to ask. So those words you just mentioned, I think they are important. A 'resident' is simply someone who lives in the neighborhood. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. And a 'volunteer' is a resident who helps without a salary. And all those things together, the people and the 'activities', ensure 'social cohesion'. Bram: Oké, sociale cohesie. Verbondenheid in de buurt. Die ga ik onthouden. Okay, social cohesion. Community spirit. I'll remember that. Just a quick tip for your exam. You often get a question about the function of a community center. Remember that it's a meeting place. The correct answer often has to do with 'social contacts' or 'organizing activities'. Okay, so not 'because you have to live there' or something like that. It's not mandatory. Mieke: Nee, precies. Het gaat om ontmoeten en vrijwillig meedoen. No, exactly. It's about meeting people and participating voluntarily. So, if I get the question on the exam 'What is the purpose of a community center?', then I should answer that it is to strengthen social cohesion. By bringing residents together for activities. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Exactly right. You summarize it perfectly. It's a place for and by the neighborhood. Speaking of which... do they also have coffee there? Mieke: Haha, vast wel. Zullen we zo even gaan kijken? Ik trakteer. Haha, I'm sure. Shall we go check it out in a bit? My treat. Bram: Goed plan! Tot morgen! Good plan! See you tomorrow!
