Applying for unemployment benefits (WW) at the UWV — KNM exam preparation with today's A2 episode on WW-uitkering aanvragen bij UWV. Phew, it's quite big here, isn't it? An office of the UWV. I've never been here before, I think. Haha, that's a good sign, Bram. That means you've always had work. But for the KNM exam, it's important to know what the UWV does. Bram: Oké, leg maar uit. UWV staat voor... Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen. Die wist ik nog! Maar wat doen ze precies? Okay, explain. UWV stands for... Employee Insurance Agency. I remembered that one! But what exactly do they do? Look, if you lose your job and you've worked enough in the recent period, then you can apply for unemployment benefits here. Bram: WW... Werkloosheidswet. WW... Unemployment Insurance Act. Oh right. So if you get fired and temporarily don't have work. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Or if your temporary contract isn't extended. You then temporarily receive money from the UWV, so you can pay your bills while you look for new work. Bram: Ah, logisch. Ah, that makes sense. And how does that work, applying? Do you have to stand in line here? No, luckily not anymore. That almost always happens online, with your DigiD. You have to do that within one week after becoming unemployed. That's an important deadline. Bram: Oké, en dan? Krijgt iedereen zomaar geld? Okay, and then? Does everyone just get money? No, there are a few important conditions. The most important is that you must have worked at least 26 weeks in the last 36 weeks. That's called the 'week requirement'. Wait a minute, 26 out of 36 weeks. So that's about half a year of work in the period before that. That's quite a clear condition. And what else? You must also be insured for unemployment. You almost always are if you've worked as an employee. And, also important: you must not have resigned yourself. Bram: Ah! Ah! So if I say 'I'm quitting', then I get nothing. That's actually logical, yes. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. And if you receive benefits, you also have obligations. The most important is the obligation to apply for jobs. So you must actively look for a new job and be able to prove that. Yes, you must be able to show that you have applied for jobs. It's usually expected that you apply four times every four weeks. And what if you find a small job while receiving benefits? Suppose you can work somewhere for ten hours a week. Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. All income you earn, you must report to the UWV. That will then be offset against your benefits. Your benefits will then be lower, but your total income is often higher. Okay, that's fair. So it always pays to work, even if it's just a little. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The goal is always to get out of unemployment as quickly as possible. Okay, and you're talking about 'the amount' and 'the duration' of the benefit. Just for clarity: 'the amount' is how many euros you get per month, and 'the duration' is how many months you get it for? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The amount depends on your last income. The duration depends on your employment history, so how long you've worked in total. And remember the word 'job application requirement' well, that comes up often. A tip for your exam: sometimes you'll get an image of an online application form. Then they'll ask, for example: 'What should you fill in for 'Last employer'?' The answer is then, of course, the name of the company where you worked. Goeie tip. Ah, so you need to be able to understand the fields of such a form. Good tip. Okay, so if I get a question about unemployment, I need to remember: if you lose your job, you can apply for a WW benefit at the UWV. There are conditions and you have a job application requirement. Mieke: Helemaal goed samengevat. Perfectly summarized. That's the core you need to know for the exam. So, now you know how it works again. Come on, let's go outside again. Bram: Haha, prima. Haha, great. I'm glad I was only here for the theory today. See you tomorrow!

'De rechten van het kind'. Heftig beeld wel, met dat meisje. Look Mieke, this information board here. 'The rights of the child'. Quite an intense image, with that girl. Yes, this is about protecting children worldwide. And that touches upon an important KNM topic: why FGM is strictly forbidden in the Netherlands. Bram: VGV? FGM? Oh yes, I've seen that abbreviation before. What exactly does it mean again? It stands for female genital mutilation. That is a procedure that intentionally and severely harms the body of a girl or woman. Bram: Verminking... dat klinkt afschuwelijk. Waarom zou iemand dat doen? Mutilation... that sounds awful. Why would someone do that? Sometimes it's part of a certain tradition from another country. But a tradition that is harmful to health is absolutely forbidden in the Netherlands. Bram: Logisch. Logical. It's that girl's own body, isn't it? No one should just do anything to it. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's a core value in the Netherlands: self-determination. Everyone, including a girl, has the right to decide over their own body. A child cannot give consent for that. And the government therefore has the duty to protect that child, I assume. Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. Dutch law is very clear about that. The law protecting a child's health is very strict. FGM is considered a serious crime. Okay, so there's also a serious penalty for it? Yes indeed, a very severe penalty. People who do this, or participate in it, can receive a long prison sentence. It falls under grievous assault. Wait a minute, and what if it happens abroad? With a girl who lives here in the Netherlands? Mieke: Heel goede vraag. Very good question. Even then it's punishable. If a girl living in the Netherlands is taken abroad for FGM, the parents or the perpetrator can be punished here in the Netherlands. Okay, so the law is really designed to protect the girl, wherever she is. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. The protection and health of the child always come first. You used that word, `mutilation`, a few times. Does that really mean 'to break something'? Yes, `mutilation` means permanently damaging someone's `body`. It is extremely `harmful` to physical and mental `health`. And no `tradition` is an excuse for something like that. Bram: Helder. Clear. That's why the government must `protect` every `girl` from these practices. The `punishment` must deter. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Pay attention, this is important for your KNM exam. You might get a question like: 'A family wants to have FGM performed on their daughter due to their tradition. Is that allowed in the Netherlands?'. Mieke: Het antwoord is altijd 'nee'. The answer is always 'no'. Dutch law, which protects the child, always takes precedence over a harmful cultural tradition. Okay, so to summarize for the exam: FGM is strictly forbidden to protect a girl's health. It is a crime with a severe penalty, because the right to your own body and health is paramount. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Exactly right. That's the core you need to remember for your exam. Phew, quite a serious topic. But good to know how the law works here. Mieke: Zeker. Kom, we lopen even verder. Tot morgen! Absolutely. Come on, let's walk a bit further. See you tomorrow! Bram: Doei! Bye!

Ongelofelijk, hè? Wow, look at how busy it is here at The Night Watch. Unbelievable, right? Yes, this is truly the heart of the museum. And actually, also the heart of the Golden Age. The Golden Age... I know it was important, of course, but why exactly again? My history lesson was a bit long ago, haha. Haha, no problem. It's a very important topic for the KNM exam, so let's go over it. Bram: Graag! Wanneer was het ook alweer? Please! When was it again? Mieke: De Gouden Eeuw was in de 17e eeuw. Dus, de jaren tussen 1600 en 1700. Dat is heel belangrijk om te onthouden. The Golden Age was in the 17th century. So, the years between 1600 and 1700. That's very important to remember. Bram: De 17e eeuw. Check. Maar waarom noemden ze het 'gouden'? The 17th century. Check. But why did they call it 'golden'? Well, because the Netherlands became extremely rich during that time. There was enormous prosperity. And how did we get all that money? Mainly through sea trade. Dutch ships sailed all over the world. They bought spices in Asia and sold them in Europe for a lot of money. You probably know the VOC. Yes, the Dutch East India Company. Certainly, I still know that name from school. Through that worldwide trade, the Netherlands not only had a lot of money, but also a lot of power. And what was also special: the Netherlands was a republic then. Bram: Oh ja! We hadden geen koning, toch? Dat was best uniek in Europa. Oh yes! We didn't have a king, right? That was quite unique in Europe. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Power lay with a small group of wealthy citizens and merchants, not with a king or emperor. Okay, so a lot of money through trade. And we see that reflected here in the museum. Mieke: Exact. Exactly. Because there was so much prosperity, rich people had money to commission paintings. Of themselves, of their family, of the landscape. So painting was a huge business then. Mieke: Ja, absoluut. Yes, absolutely. Painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer became world-famous. But it wasn't just art that flourished. Bram: Wat nog meer dan? What else then? Science too. Because the Netherlands was relatively tolerant, many thinkers and scientists came here. There was more freedom to publish and conduct research. Bram: Wauw. Dus in één eeuw gebeurde er ontzettend veel. Handel, rijkdom, kunst en wetenschap. Wow. So an awful lot happened in one century. Trade, wealth, art and science. Mieke: Klopt. Het was een heel dynamische periode. That's right. It was a very dynamic period. So if I understand correctly, 'trade' led to enormous 'prosperity'. And are those two words really the key to that whole period? Yes, that's the basis. And that prosperity, in turn, created space for culture, such as 'painting'. Those three really belong together when you talk about the Golden Age. Bram: Duidelijk. Handel, welvaart, schilderkunst. Ik schrijf ze op. Clear. Trade, prosperity, painting. I'll write them down. Pay attention for the exam. They often ask about a characteristic of the Golden Age. The answers are often something with 'trade', 'painting' or 'prosperity'. If you see those words, there's a very high chance that's the correct answer. Okay, so to summarize it for myself: The Golden Age is the 17th century. The Netherlands was then a rich republic with a lot of power. And the important themes are trade, prosperity, and art. Did I get that right? Mieke: Perfect samengevat. Perfectly summarized. That's exactly the core you need to know for KNM. Bram: Top. Great. Now I understand much better what I'm actually looking at. Thank you! Mieke: Graag gedaan. You're welcome. Good luck with studying and see you next time!

Ik herken haar gezicht van het nieuws. Look Mieke, that woman on stage, is that a minister? I recognize her face from the news. No, that's a State Secretary. They are similar in their work, but there's an important difference. A good topic for today. Bram: Oh? Oh? I always thought they were roughly the same. What exactly is the difference then? Mieke: Nou, kijk. Well, look. Every ministry, officially called a department, has one boss. And that is the minister. Okay, that's clear. The Minister of Education is the boss of the Department of Education. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. But such a department is very large and has a lot of work. Sometimes a minister can't do everything alone. Bram: Logisch. En dan komt de staatssecretaris helpen? Logical. And then the State Secretary comes to help? Mieke: Ja. Yes. A State Secretary is appointed to support the minister. He or she works in the same department. Bram: Dus eigenlijk een soort 'onderminister' of een belangrijke assistent? So basically a kind of 'under-minister' or an important assistant? You could see it that way. A State Secretary often gets their own policy area. Their own, specific topic for which he or she is responsible. Bram: Een eigen beleidsterrein... Their own policy area... So for example, the Minister of Health handles the big issues and the State Secretary only handles sports? That's a perfect example, yes. The State Secretary is then a kind of specialist for that one topic. That specific topic is called the portfolio. Ah, the portfolio. And does every department then automatically have a State Secretary? No, not necessarily. That is decided per cabinet. Large, heavy departments like Finance or Social Affairs often have one, sometimes even two. Other, smaller departments don't have any. Okay, so it's not mandatory. I didn't know that. And if there are two, do they both have their own portfolio? Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. Then the work is divided even further. The goal is always to support the minister and make governance more efficient. And who is the ultimate boss then? If that State Secretary makes a mistake, who is responsible for it? Mieke: Goede vraag! Good question! The minister always remains ultimately responsible for the entire department. So also for the work of the State Secretary. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? So the minister can get into trouble because of a mistake by the State Secretary? Mieke: Ja, dat kan gebeuren. De minister is politiek verantwoordelijk. Dat is in de wet zo bepaald. Yes, that can happen. The minister is politically responsible. That is stipulated in the law. Okay, and what about the budget? The money? The minister presents the budget for the entire department. The State Secretary is responsible for the budget of his or her own policy area. Okay, just to recap for myself. So the important words are: the department, which is the ministry. The State Secretary, who helps the minister. And the portfolio, which is their own work package. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Exactly right. And especially remember the verb: a State Secretary supports the minister. That word is important for the exam. Pay attention, for the KNM exam the most important question is: who is the boss? The answer is always: the minister. The minister is ultimately responsible, also for the work of the State Secretary. Ah, that's a good one. So the State Secretary is never the boss of the minister. I'll remember that. So, if I get a question, I need to know: a State Secretary works for a minister in the same department and is a specialist, but the minister is the ultimate boss. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's the core of what you need to know. Mieke: Sst, het debat gaat nu echt beginnen. Laten we luisteren. Shh, the debate is really about to start now. Let's listen. Bram: Oké. Tot de volgende keer! Okay. Until next time!

'Jong en zwanger? Je staat er niet alleen voor.' Best een serieuze boodschap. Say Mieke, we're standing here now in front of the Centre for Youth and Family... and I see a poster hanging there. 'Young and pregnant? You're not alone.' Quite a serious message. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. And it's an important topic, also for the KNM exam. What do you think, what help is available in the Netherlands for a teenage mother? Bram: Poeh... de gemeente, denk ik? Of haar ouders misschien? Ik weet het eigenlijk niet zo goed. Phew... the municipality, I guess? Or her parents maybe? I don't really know. That's a start, but there's much more specific help. If a young woman is unexpectedly pregnant, she can turn to special organizations for professional assistance. Bram: Speciale organisaties? Zoals? Special organizations? Like? Mieke: Nou, bijvoorbeeld Siriz of FIOM. Well, for example, Siriz or FIOM. These are national organizations specialized in help with an unintended pregnancy. They provide information and support. Okay, and what kind of support do they provide exactly? Do they help with money or a house? Yes, they can. The guidance is very broad. They help with practical matters, such as finding housing or applying for benefits. But also with emotional support. And what about school or work? That also seems like a big problem to me. Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. It's very important that a young mother has a good future. That's why they also help to see how she can finish her education or find work. They make a plan together. So such a helper doesn't just say: 'Put on your coat!' and 'Go to school!'? Haha, no, that's not how it works. They don't use commands, like the imperative. They give advice and look for solutions together. For example, they say: 'It's a good idea to talk to your school' or 'Maybe we can look into special provisions'. That is a big difference. So they help you to make the right choices yourself for your perspective. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's about the teenage mother keeping control herself, but with the right help. And organizations like the Centre for Youth and Family, where we are now, help later with questions about parenting. Bram: Interessant. Interesting. So there's actually a whole network of help. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. From the first questions during pregnancy to help with parenting later. You use a few words that are similar: 'hulpverlening', 'ondersteuning', and 'begeleiding'. What exactly is the difference? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. Look, 'hulpverlening' is the general word for all professional assistance. 'Ondersteuning' is often practical: help with money, belongings, or a house. And 'begeleiding' is more personal, a kind of coaching to help you with plans for your future. Bram: Ah, oké. Dat is duidelijker. Ah, okay. That's clearer. Pay attention for your exam. You often get a short text about a young woman who is unexpectedly pregnant and doesn't know what to do. The question then is: where can she go for help? Then remember the names Siriz and FIOM. These are often the right answers for specific help with an unintended pregnancy. Okay, so if I see a question about a teenage mother who needs help with her pregnancy and her future, then I should think of organizations like Siriz and FIOM. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You should know that in the Netherlands, special, free help is available to help young mothers get a good start. Bram: Duidelijk. Weer wat geleerd vandaag! Understood. Learned something new today! Mieke: Goed zo. Tot morgen! Good. See you tomorrow!

Oh, this brochure. 'State Exam NT2' and 'Civic Integration Exam'. I always thought they were the same, haha. Mieke: Nee, zeker niet. Dat is een veelvoorkomend misverstand. Kom, dan leg ik het je wel even uit. No, certainly not. That's a common misunderstanding. Come, I'll explain it to you. Bram: Graag! Want wat is nou het grote verschil? Gladly! Because what's the big difference then? Look, the civic integration exam is mainly intended to show that you can manage in daily life in the Netherlands. The language level is A2. A2... that's being able to have a simple conversation, right? About the weather and grocery shopping? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. It's the basic level. Most people who need to integrate will take that exam. It's a mandatory part of civic integration. Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En het Staatsexamen NT2 dan? Dat klinkt veel serieuzer. Okay, clear. And the State Exam NT2 then? That sounds much more serious. It is. The State Exam is at a higher level: B1 or B2. You often need that if you want to study at a university of applied sciences or a university. Ah, so if a newcomer, for example, wants to become a doctor here, then he or she will take the State Exam? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. Then you have to show that you master the language well enough for a complex study or a higher-level job. Good preparation is needed for that. Bram: En wat betekenen B1 en B2 dan? Ik zie hier 'Programma I' en 'Programma II' staan. And what do B1 and B2 mean then? I see 'Program I' and 'Program II' written here. Mieke: Klopt. Programma I is voor niveau B1. That's right. Program I is for level B1. That's often suitable for work or vocational education. Program II is B2, and that's really for universities of applied sciences and universities. Wait a minute, so if you pass the State Exam, you don't have to take the civic integration exam anymore? Mieke: Dat klopt meestal. That's usually correct. If you pass the State Exam, you get an exemption for the language components of the civic integration exam. After all, you demonstrate a higher level. Bram: Handig. Handy. And with such a diploma, or uh, certificate, can you then enroll at a university? Yes, with the certificate from Program II you can register. So the choice of exam depends entirely on what you want to do in the future. Okay, so the main difference is really the level and the goal. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And each exam tests different skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. For the State Exam NT2, you choose a specific program, I or II, depending on your goal. Bram: Helder. Clear. And so it is especially suitable for people who want to pursue further education here. Just a tip for the KNM exam, Bram. They often ask a question about this. Remember well: the integration exam is at language level A2. That's an important fact. Bram: A2, A2, A2. Oké. Dat ga ik onthouden. A2, A2, A2. Okay. I'll remember that. So, if I summarize this for the exam: The integration exam is level A2 for daily life. The state exam is level B1 or B2, for work or study. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. If you remember that, you can certainly answer that question correctly on the exam. Bram: Top, weer wat geleerd. Kom, gaan we nu echt een kopje koffie drinken? Great, learned something new again. Come on, shall we really go for a cup of coffee now? Mieke: Ja, goed plan. Tot morgen! Yes, good plan. See you tomorrow!

Say Mieke, yesterday I was watching a TV program about a family with quite a lot of problems. Then I heard the word 'youth care'. I know roughly what it is, but what exactly do they do? It always sounds so heavy. I understand that, it does sound serious. But youth care is actually a very broad concept. It's all help and support for children and young people up to 18 years old, and for their parents. It's about growing up and parenting. Ah, so it's not just for when really bad things happen? No, certainly not. Look, the help from the well-baby clinic, for example, is also a form of youth care. If you have questions about raising your baby, you can go there. That's very accessible. Oh yes, of course, the well-baby clinic. I didn't even think of that. But who arranges that help then, if it's more than a simple question? Mieke: De gemeente. The municipality. For a few years now, the municipality has been responsible for all youth care. So if a family needs help, they can go there. The municipality then works with the family to find the right solution. Okay. And what if things are really not going well at home? For example, if a child is not safe? Then you're talking about youth protection. That's a very serious part of youth care. That only happens if a child's development or safety is at risk and parents cannot solve the problems themselves. Bram: Poeh, heftig. Worden kinderen dan uit huis geplaatst? Phew, intense. Are children then removed from their homes? That can be the last step, but the goal is always to try and improve the situation at home. I once knew a family where the mother was having a very hard time. She wanted help, but she just couldn't manage it anymore. She really had to ask for support. Bram: En heeft de gemeente toen geholpen? And did the municipality help then? Mieke: Ja. Yes. After a few conversations, they received in-home help. The children were fortunately allowed to stay living at home, but someone did come by to help the mother with parenting and structure. It was the only way to keep the family together. Okay, that's good to know. So it's meant to help, not to punish. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The safety and well-being of the child always come first. Wait a minute, for clarity. What exactly is the difference between the words 'youth care' and 'youth protection'? I'm getting them a bit mixed up. Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. Remember this: 'youth care' is the general term for all help. From parenting advice to therapy. 'Youth protection' is the specific, mandatory part of youth care for when a child is no longer safe in the family. So that's much more serious. Bram: Aha, oké. Jeugdzorg is breed, jeugdbescherming is specifiek en serieus. Helder. Aha, okay. Youth care is broad, youth protection is specific and serious. Clear. Well, a tip for your exam. What's very important to remember: the municipality is responsible for youth care. If you see a question about a family with children that has problems, the correct answer is almost always something about 'asking for help from the municipality'. Okay, so if I get a question on the exam about a family that needs help with parenting, then I need to know that the municipality is the place where they can get that help. Mieke: Ja, precies. De gemeente is het startpunt voor jeugdzorg. Dat is de kern. Yes, exactly. The municipality is the starting point for youth care. That's the core. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt weer, Mieke. Toch weer wat geleerd. Clear. Thanks again, Mieke. Learned something new again. Mieke: Graag gedaan, Bram. Tot morgen! You're welcome, Bram. See you tomorrow!

Hey, what's hanging on the window there? Such a colored arrow with a letter. Mieke: Ah, dat is het energielabel. Dat is een belangrijk onderwerp voor KNM. Zullen we daar even naar kijken? Ah, that's the energy label. That's an important topic for KNM. Shall we take a look at it? Dit huis heeft label B. The energy label... oh yes, I've seen that before. But I don't really know exactly what it means. This house has label B. Mieke: Precies. Label B is best goed. Het label loopt van A tot en met G. A is donkergroen en G is donkerrood. Exactly. Label B is quite good. The label runs from A to G. A is dark green and G is dark red. Just like at school back then? So A is the best score and G is the worst? Mieke: Helemaal juist. Exactly right. A house with label A is very energy-efficient. That means it needs little energy to keep it warm. Bram: En hoe komt dat dan? Omdat de isolatie beter is, of zo? And how does that happen then? Because the insulation is better, or something? Mieke: Ja, bijvoorbeeld. Yes, for example. A house with a good label often has double glazing and good insulation in the walls and roof. Sometimes they also have solar panels. Okay, so if you have a house with a good label, your monthly costs are probably lower. That's interesting. Mieke: Klopt. The energy bill is a large part of your fixed monthly expenses. A house with label G can be hundreds of euros per month more expensive than a house with label A. Bram: Wauw, dat is een enorm verschil. Wow, that's a huge difference. Is such a label actually mandatory when you sell a house? Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. The energy label is mandatory when selling and renting a home. The new resident needs to know how energy-efficient the house is. I didn't remember that. I do find sustainability important, so this is good information. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The label helps people make a conscious choice. What's important to remember are a few words that go with this. Bram: Oké, welke woorden? Okay, which words? Well, 'energy-efficient' means that something uses little energy. And 'the insulation' is the material that ensures the heat stays inside. And 'the monthly costs' are, of course, all fixed expenses per month. Bram: Duidelijk. Energiezuinig, isolatie, en maandlasten. Die schrijf ik op. Clear. Energy-efficient, insulation, and monthly costs. I'll write those down. A. Just a tip for your exam. You often get a question with an image of an energy label. The question is then, for example: 'Which house has the lowest energy bill?' You then have to choose the house with the best letter, so the closest to A. Bram: Oké, dus als ik op het examen een vraag krijg over het energielabel, moet ik onthouden dat A het beste is en G het slechtste. Okay, so if I get a question about the energy label on the exam, I need to remember that A is the best and G is the worst. Mieke: Precies. Een groen label betekent lage energiekosten, een rood label betekent hoge energiekosten. Zo simpel is het eigenlijk. Exactly. A green label means low energy costs, a red label means high energy costs. It's actually that simple. Bram: Top, die ga ik onthouden. Kom, we kijken verder in de keuken. Great, I'll remember that. Come on, let's look further in the kitchen. Mieke: Goed idee. En succes weer met studeren! Good idea. And good luck with your studies again!

Is hij ontslagen? Hey Mieke, I just saw Yusuf walking out with a big box. Has he been fired? No, thankfully not. He resigned himself. He found a new job. But that's a good KNM topic: how does dismissal work in the Netherlands? Oh, okay. I was startled for a moment. I always thought you were very well protected here in the Netherlands. An employer can't just put you out on the street, can they? No, that's absolutely right. An employer always needs a valid reason and must follow an official procedure. You can't be fired overnight. Bram: En wat is die procedure dan? Hoe gaat dat? And what is that procedure then? How does that work? Well, look, there are actually two main routes for dismissal. If it's for business economic reasons, meaning if the company is doing poorly financially, then the employer must apply for a dismissal permit from the UWV. Bram: Het UWV? The UWV? I know them. That's where you go for unemployment benefits, right? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. But they do more. The UWV checks if the employer's reason is truly valid. They only grant a permit if the reason is valid. Bram: Oké, dat is route één. En de tweede? Okay, that's route one. And the second? The second route is via the subdistrict court judge. That happens more often when there's a personal problem. For example, a major conflict at work, or if an employee genuinely isn't doing their job well. Bram: Dat klinkt allebei best heftig en ingewikkeld. That both sounds quite intense and complicated. It is. That's why there's a third way, which is used very often: dismissal by mutual consent. Then you make agreements together. Bram: Hoe dan? How so? Then the employer and employee jointly sign a settlement agreement. That's a contract stating that you stop working and under what conditions. For example, from when, and whether you'll receive compensation. Ah, so then you don't have to go to the UWV or the judge. That's actually quite fair. Yes, that's often the best solution for everyone. And what's also important is the notice period. If you resign, or if your employer terminates your contract, there's always a period before you actually leave. Yes, I know that one. That's usually a month, right? The time between giving notice and your last working day. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. So Yusuf probably already said a month ago that he had found a new job. Okay, let me get this straight for myself. The words are a bit confusing. 'To resign' is something you do yourself, and 'to be fired' happens to you. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And remember the difference between a 'dismissal permit' – which you apply for at the UWV – and a 'settlement agreement', which is a mutual arrangement. Those are important terms. For your KNM exam, this is really important to know: an employer in the Netherlands cannot just fire you. There is always an official procedure through the UWV or the court, unless you both reach an agreement. Okay, so if I get a question about losing your job, I need to remember: it must be through the UWV, the court, or a settlement agreement. And there is always a notice period. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely correct. If you know that, you can definitely answer the questions about this topic. Bram: Fijn. Weer wat geleerd. Zullen we nu echt naar huis gaan? Ik ben klaar met werken voor vandaag. Great. Learned something new again. Shall we really go home now? I'm done working for today. Mieke: Haha, ja, is goed. Tot morgen en succes met studeren! Haha, yes, okay. See you tomorrow and good luck with studying!

Mieke, look here. I see a flyer in this rack with the title 'Stop Forced Marriage'. What exactly is that? Mieke: Ah, huwelijksdwang. Ah, forced marriage. That's an important topic, also for your KNM exam. It's about marrying against your will. Forced marriage means that someone, often the family, forces you to marry a person you haven't chosen yourself. Bram: Dwingt? Dus je hebt echt totaal geen keuze? Je moet gewoon 'ja' zeggen? Forces? So you really have no choice at all? You just have to say 'yes'? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The victim doesn't want to, but is pressured into marrying anyway. And that is strictly forbidden in the Netherlands. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? I thought that might be more of a 'family matter'. Something families arrange among themselves. No, absolutely not. Dutch legislation sees this as a serious crime against the person. Your freedom to choose for yourself is much more important than what a family wants. It is punishable. Punishable, so you can go to prison for it if you force someone? Mieke: Jazeker. Absolutely. The law that regulates this is very clear. The right to self-determination, meaning the right to make your own decisions about your own life, is a core value in the Netherlands. Okay, that's clear. But what if someone is taken abroad on holiday, for example, and has to marry there? Does that count too? That's a very good question. Yes, that is also punishable. We call that 'abandonment with the purpose of forced marriage'. The person who organizes that can be prosecuted in the Netherlands. Wow, so Dutch law protects you even if you're not even in the country at that moment. I didn't know that. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. The point is that the victim is often a resident of the Netherlands. Dutch law is there to protect that person, wherever they are. And the help you can get... Is that only for the victim themselves? Or also for others? No, precisely also for the people around them. Friends, neighbors, teachers. Anyone who is concerned can report it or ask for advice. It's important that people know there is help. Okay, so let's list the important words. `Forced marriage` is when someone `forces` you to marry. There is a `prohibition` on it, and it is therefore `punishable`. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And punishable means that there is a penalty for it under the law, such as a fine or imprisonment. The `legislation` is very serious about this. Pay attention, because this is a typical exam question. You often get a situation: 'Your girlfriend is being forced by her parents to marry. What do you do?' The correct answer always involves seeking professional `help`. And where do you seek that help then? Do you call the police? You can, but an important organization to remember is 'Veilig Thuis' (Safe At Home). You can make a `report` there. They are the experts who can help the victims. Okay, so for the exam I need to remember: forced marriage is a crime in the Netherlands. If I think someone is a victim, I must advise them to seek help, for example from Veilig Thuis. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That is the core you need to know for KNM. Bram: Duidelijk. Bedankt voor de uitleg. Zullen we nu een boek gaan zoeken? Understood. Thanks for the explanation. Shall we go look for a book now? Mieke: Goed plan. Tot de volgende keer! Good plan. Until next time!

Rotterdam, 1946. Alles is kapot. Wow, look at these photos here, Mieke. Rotterdam, 1946. Everything is destroyed. Steden, wegen, bruggen... alles lag in puin. Yes, devastating, isn't it? After the Second World War, a large part of the Netherlands was devastated. Cities, roads, bridges... everything was in ruins. How on earth do you start over again? Well, that's a very important part of our history. We call that period 'the reconstruction'. Bram: De wederopbouw. Dat klinkt logisch. Opnieuw bouwen. The reconstruction. That sounds logical. Rebuilding. Mieke: Precies. Mensen leefden in moeilijke omstandigheden. Exactly. From 1945, the Dutch worked very hard to rebuild the country. The economy had collapsed and there was a lot of poverty. People lived in difficult circumstances. There was a shortage of everything: food, clothing, houses. I can imagine that. And then you have to rebuild an entire country. Did we do all that ourselves? That seems almost impossible if you're so poor. Mieke: Dat is een goede vraag. Nee, we kregen hulp. That's a good question. No, we received help. Financial support, especially from America. Without that help, it would have taken much longer. Bram: Amerika? Waarom zouden die ons geld geven? Dat is toch bijzonder. America? Why would they give us money? That's quite remarkable. That was a special plan, the Marshall Plan. Named after the American minister George Marshall. The idea was simple: if we helped the European countries rebuild their economies, they would become stable, democratic partners. And they were also afraid of the Soviet Union and communism, I believe? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The Americans were afraid that communism would become popular in a poor and broken Europe. So it wasn't just charity, it was also smart politics. Bram: Ah, oké. En wat voor hulp was dat precies? Gaven ze gewoon zakken met geld? Ah, okay. And what kind of help was that exactly? Did they just give bags of money? Haha, not literally. It was an entire program. The aid consisted of money, but also goods, machines for industry, and food. With that money, the Netherlands could, for example, buy raw materials to get the factories running again. Bram: En dat werkte? And that worked? Mieke: Het werkte heel goed. It worked very well. It led to rapid economic growth. New houses, factories, and roads were built. With that support, the port of Rotterdam became one of the largest in the world. The Netherlands modernized at a high pace. Wow, that's impressive. From complete ruin to economic growth. I really didn't know the Marshall Plan was so important. I forgot that from primary school history class. Haha, that's why we're here. It's a period that Dutch people are still proud of. That mentality of 'putting our shoulders to the wheel together'. Bram: Oké, even voor mijn notities. Okay, just for my notes. So the most important word is 'the reconstruction'. And that was the period of recovery after the war. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. And also remember 'the aid' or 'the support' from America. That was the Marshall Plan. The goal of this plan was to restore the economy and industry. Bram: Wederopbouw, hulp, steun, herstellen. En die groei van de economie. Duidelijk. Reconstruction, help, support, recovery. And that economic growth. Understood. For your KNM exam, this is an important topic. You often get a question like: 'Why was reconstruction necessary after 1945?' The answer is, of course, because the country was largely destroyed by the war. Simple, really, when you put it that way. So, if I get a question about the period after the war, I need to know: the Netherlands was devastated, reconstruction was the recovery, and we received financial aid from America via the Marshall Plan for the economy. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's the core you need to remember. That support was crucial for economic growth. Iets vrolijkers. Alright, got it. Shall we look at the Golden Age now? Something more cheerful. Mieke: Haha, goed plan. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, good plan. Until next time!

Look, Mieke, there's the prime minister on TV again. He's really everywhere lately with those debates. Mieke: Ja, logisch. Hij is het gezicht van de regering. Yes, that makes sense. He's the face of the government. Say, is he actually the boss of the Netherlands? Like a president in America? Haha, no, that's a misunderstanding many people have. A good question for the KNM exam. Shall we clarify that? Please, because I always thought: he's the most important, so he's the boss. He is the most important minister, but not the boss of the whole country. The king is our head of state, but he has no political power. The prime minister is the head of government. Bram: Regeringsleider. Oké. Wat betekent dat precies in de praktijk? Head of government. Okay. What exactly does that mean in practice? That means he leads the government. He is the chairman of the Council of Ministers. That's the meeting of all ministers, every Friday. Ah, so he's the chairman of the meeting. But he does have the final say, right? No, not necessarily. He has to make sure the ministers agree. All important decisions are made by the entire group of ministers. He cannot decide something on his own. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? Can he then fire a minister if they do something stupid? He can't do that alone either. He's more the captain of the team than a director of a company. Okay, that's different from what I thought. And how does he become prime minister then? We don't vote directly for him, do we? No, that's right. The prime minister is not directly elected by the people. After the elections for the House of Representatives, a government is formed. Usually, the leader of the largest party in the coalition becomes the prime minister. It's strange, actually, that I didn't know this exactly. It just happens, and you don't think about it. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. He also has his own, very small ministry. The Ministry of General Affairs. Bram: Algemene Zaken. General Affairs. That sounds like they do everything and nothing. Haha, they do a lot. They support the prime minister and coordinate the policy of the entire government. And they prepare, for example, the weekly press conference. Ah yes, the press conference on Friday afternoon. Then he really is the face of the government. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Then he explains what the Council of Ministers has decided. Wait a minute, you keep saying 'minister-president', but sometimes I also hear the word 'premier'. Is there a difference? No, that's exactly the same. 'Premier' is just a shorter word for minister-president. They both mean 'head of government'. On the exam, you might encounter both words. Duidelijk. Okay, so premier and minister-president are synonyms. And he is the chairman who leads the government. Clear. Just a tip for your exam. You often see a photo of the minister-president with the question: What is his most important task? Remember this well: the correct answer is something like 'he leads the meetings of the Council of Ministers' or 'he is the chairman of the ministers'. Okay, so if I get such a question, I need to remember: he is not the boss of the country, but the leader of the cabinet, the chairman of the ministers. Mieke: Helemaal juist. Absolutely correct. He leads the team, but doesn't decide alone. Bram: Helder! Clear! Now I look differently at that man on TV. Mieke: Goed zo. Good. Until next time and good luck with your studies!

Haha, yes, he knows what he wants. Bram: Hij kent z'n rechten, denk ik. He knows his rights, I think. Mieke: Nou, dat je daarover begint... Kinderrechten is een heel belangrijk onderwerp. Ook voor het KNM-examen. Well, now that you mention it... Children's rights is a very important topic. Also for the KNM exam. Bram: Oh, echt? Oh, really? I thought rights were mainly for adults. Mieke: Nee, zeker niet. Kinderen in Nederland hebben speciale rechten. Die zijn vastgelegd in een internationaal verdrag. No, definitely not. Children in the Netherlands have special rights. These are laid down in an international treaty. Bram: Een verdrag? Dat klinkt heel officieel. A treaty? That sounds very official. It is. It's the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. Almost all countries in the world have signed it. It's an agreement of the United Nations, the UN. Okay, the UN. And what does that treaty say then? That they have a right to candy and toys? Haha, no, not exactly. It's about more serious things. The most important right is the right to a safe and healthy development. A healthy development... what does that mean concretely? That means, for example, that children have a right to protection. They must be protected against violence, abuse, and neglect. Bram: Ja, logisch. Dat is heel belangrijk. Yes, that makes sense. That's very important. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And they have a right to education. All children in the Netherlands must go to school. That is even a duty for parents, compulsory education. Ah, so the parents have a duty, and the child has a right. Mieke: Juist. Exactly. And children also have the right to their own opinion. Adults must listen to children's opinions. That doesn't mean children always get their way, of course. Haha, no, I figured as much. Otherwise, that boy over there would go home without a coat in the rain. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. But his mother does have to seriously listen to why he doesn't want to wear that coat. And what if things really go wrong at home? Bram: Ja, wat dan? Yes, what then? Then there are organizations that help. For example, the Children's Ombudsman. They check whether the government and other organizations respect children's rights. The Children's Ombudsman... I've heard of that. So they specifically advocate for children. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. He is there to ensure that children's rights are not forgotten. Okay, let's recap. You mentioned a few important words: right, duty, and protection. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. A right is something you are allowed to have or do, like the right to education. A duty is something you must do, an obligation. And protection is one of the most important children's rights: the care that a child is safe. What's important to remember for your exam: these children's rights apply to all children living in the Netherlands. It doesn't matter what passport they have or where their parents were born. A typical exam question is: 'What is an important right of a child in the Netherlands?'. And then the answer is often something like 'education' or 'protection against violence'? Mieke: Precies. Dat zijn de belangrijkste om te onthouden. Exactly. Those are the most important ones to remember. Okay, so if I see a question about children's rights, I need to think of that international UN convention. And the core is: right to a safe development, so education and protection. And parents have the duty to ensure that. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Dat is precies wat je moet weten. Absolutely right. That's exactly what you need to know. Look, the bell is ringing. The discussion about the jacket is over too, I see. He's wearing it. Mieke: Zie je wel. Goed, succes met leren! See? Good, good luck with studying! Bram: Dank je, tot de volgende keer! Thanks, until next time!

Well, it's quite busy here in this language school. I see posters everywhere: 'Start your integration course now!' What exactly does such a course entail? I always thought it was just about learning Dutch. Haha, many Dutch people think that. But it's much more than just language. The language is, of course, the foundation, but the whole course prepares you for the integration exam. Okay, and what all will you learn then? Mieke: Nou, kijk. Well, look. Most people who come to the Netherlands have an integration obligation. That means they are obliged to integrate. They then go to a language school like this one. Bram: Logisch. En dan beginnen ze met Nederlands. Makes sense. And then they start with Dutch. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The most important thing is learning the Dutch language. Students work towards a certain language level. Usually that's level A2 or B1. So they attend lessons for reading, listening, writing, and speaking. And besides that, KNM, which we are currently 'studying'. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. KNM, Knowledge of Dutch Society, is a very important component. You learn about history, politics, healthcare, education... basically everything you need to know to be able to live here. Bram: En wat nog meer? Ik hoorde laatst ook iets over ONA. And what else? I also recently heard something about ONA. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. That is ONA: Orientation on the Dutch Labor Market. That's a module that prepares you for finding work in the Netherlands. Bram: Huh, echt? Wat leer je daar dan? Hoe je moet solliciteren? Huh, really? What do you learn there then? How to apply for a job? Heel praktisch dus. Yes, among other things. You'll learn how to create a good CV, where you can find job vacancies, and how a job interview works here. Very practical, then. Bram: Dat is wel slim eigenlijk. Dus je hebt taal, maatschappij en werk. Is dat het? That's quite clever, actually. So you have language, society, and work. Is that it? Mieke: Bijna. Almost. There's also the participation declaration trajectory. The PVT. That's a mandatory component about the core values of Dutch society. Think of freedom, equality, and solidarity. Bram: Participatie...verklaring? Wat een woord. Participation...declaration? What a word. Mieke: Ja. Yes. After a number of workshops, you sign a declaration that you respect those values. Only when you have completed all those components will you take the full integration exam. Bram: Wauw. Wow. That's quite a package. I didn't know it was so extensive. Mieke: Zeker. Certainly. The intention is that after the integration course, you can truly participate independently in the Netherlands. Okay, so just for clarity. You have KNM, which is knowledge about society. And you have ONA, and that's specifically about job searching. Are those two separate components? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. KNM is Knowledge of Dutch Society and ONA is Orientation on the Dutch Labor Market. And then you also have the participation declaration. Those are the three components in addition to the language exams. Bram: Helder. Clear. A tip for the exam: they often ask a question about the components of civic integration. Remember the four most important elements: Language, KNM, ONA, and the Participation Statement. Sometimes they give a wrong answer, such as 'driving lessons'. Bram: Haha, rijles. Oké, dat is een goeie. Die ga ik onthouden. Haha, driving lessons. Okay, that's a good one. I'll remember that. So if I get the question on the exam 'What do you learn in the civic integration course?', then I need to think of the four blocks: the Dutch language, KNM about society, ONA about work, and the participation statement about values. Yes, that's the core. If you remember those four, you'll always be fine. Mieke: Goed, zullen we nu zelf even een kopje koffie gaan drinken? Right, shall we go get a cup of coffee ourselves now? Bram: Ja, goed plan. Tot de volgende keer! Yes, good plan. See you next time!

Wow, what a modern building this is. But Mieke, what kind of place is this exactly? It doesn't really feel like a hospital. Mieke: Nee, dat klopt. Dit is een instelling van de GGZ. Weet je wat dat is? No, that's right. This is a GGZ institution. Do you know what that is? Bram: GGZ? GGZ? Those letters sound familiar, but I couldn't explain it exactly, haha. The GGZ stands for Mental Healthcare. It's the place where you get help for mental health issues. Zoals... stress ofzo? Mental health issues... so if you don't feel mentally well? Like... stress or something? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Or if you suffer from depression, for example, or feel a lot of anxiety. Those kinds of things. Okay. And how do you end up here? Can you just walk in and say: 'Hello, I'd like to talk to a psychologist'? No, that's not how it works. In the Netherlands, you always go to your GP first. Even with mental health problems. Oh yes, of course, the GP. They're a bit like the gatekeeper of healthcare, right? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The GP talks to you. Sometimes the practice support worker can already help. That's someone who works in the GP practice and specializes in mental health support. Bram: Een praktijkondersteuner... A practice support worker... that's called POH, right? A colleague of mine had that recently. He wanted quick help and fortunately could go directly to the POH. That's right, the POH-GGZ. But if you need more specialized help, for example therapy, then the GP gives you a referral for the GGZ. And then you end up here, with a psychologist. Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. But unfortunately, there's often a big problem: the waiting list. Sometimes you have to wait months before you can start your therapy. Bram: Wacht even, maanden? Wait a minute, months? That's really long if you're not feeling well. A friend of mine really had to wait half a year. I thought he was exaggerating. No, that's unfortunately the reality. The waiting list is a known problem in the GGZ. In the past, you might not even have been allowed to talk about this, there was a lot of shame. Now we talk about it more, but there's too little capacity. That's a double-edged sword. It's good that it's discussable, but a shame that the help isn't immediately available. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. But the care itself is generally very good once it's your turn. Bram: Oké, dus even checken. Okay, so just to check. The GGZ is the organization. A psychologist is the specialist. And psychological is the type of problem, which has to do with your feelings and thoughts. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely correct. And also remember the practice support worker, the POH. That's often the first step after the GP. Just like with depression or anxiety. For your KNM exam, the route is important. They often ask: 'What is the first step for mental health complaints?' The answer is always: go to the GP. Not directly to mental healthcare or a psychologist. Bram: Helder. Clear. So if I see a question about where you get help for depression, I need to remember: first the GP, and they will refer you to mental healthcare if necessary. Mieke: Precies. De huisarts is de sleutel. Zo simpel is het eigenlijk. Exactly. The GP is the key. It's that simple, really. So, now you know that too. Shall we go for a cup of coffee? Bram: Goed idee. En tot de volgende les! Good idea. And until the next lesson!

Haha, you thought right, but first I have my annual VvE meeting. I thought I'd take you along for once. Good for your KNM knowledge! Bram: Een VvE... A VvE... Association of Owners, right? That's only if you have an apartment, isn't it? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. When you buy an apartment, you automatically become a member of the VvE. That's mandatory. Why is that mandatory then? You're just the owner of your own home, aren't you? Yes, of your own apartment, sure. But the roof, the elevator, the hall... those belong to all owners together. And so we have to maintain them together too. Bram: Ah, oké. En daarom is er zo'n vergadering? Om te praten over het onderhoud? Ah, okay. And that's why there's a meeting like this? To talk about maintenance? Mieke: Inderdaad. Indeed. Look, the maintenance plan is on the agenda. We have to decide whether to have the exterior of the building painted next year. Bram: En wie beslist dat? Is er een soort baas? And who decides that? Is there some kind of boss? Mieke: Nee, dat is het mooie. Alle eigenaren beslissen mee. We gaan erover stemmen. Elk appartement heeft één stem. No, that's the beauty of it. All owners participate in the decision-making. We're going to vote on it. Each apartment has one vote. So if the majority says 'yes', it happens? Even if you don't agree with it? Yes, that's how democracy works, even in a building, haha. We do have a board. Those are a few owners who handle the daily matters. Bram: Oké, een bestuur. En dat onderhoud kost natuurlijk geld. Hoe betalen jullie dat? Okay, a board. And that maintenance costs money, of course. How do you pay for that? Each owner pays a fixed contribution every month. We call that the service costs. With that money, we pay for insurance, cleaning, and we save for major maintenance. Bram: Een maandelijkse bijdrage dus. So, a monthly contribution. That's smart, that you save for when something big breaks down. Mieke: Zeker. Exactly. That's all in the maintenance plan. It precisely outlines when we're going to do what in the coming years. Wait, so VvE, board, owner, contribution... those are a lot of words to remember. Mieke: Klopt. That's right. What's important is: the VvE is the association of all owners together. The board handles the organization. And after the meeting, they prepare the minutes. Bram: Notulen? Wat is dat? Minutes? What's that? That's an official report of the meeting, so everyone can read which decisions we have made. Just a tip for your exam: sometimes you'll get an audio fragment of an Owners' Association meeting. You then need to listen carefully to what people are going to vote on and what the final decision is. Okay, so pay close attention to who is for and against and what the conclusion is. So, if I get a question on the exam, I need to remember: if you buy an apartment, you are a member of the Owners' Association. You pay a contribution and you can vote on the maintenance. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. You have rights, such as voting rights, and obligations, such as paying the monthly contribution. That is the core. Shh, I think they're about to start. I'm curious. Mieke: Haha, stil maar. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, quiet down. Until next time!

Alright Mieke, a quick break. I just looked at my December payslip and I heard a colleague talking about his 'thirteenth month'. Ah, the thirteenth month. A classic at the end of the year. Do you know what that is? Bram: Niet precies. Not exactly. I assume it's something extra, because I've never had it. Does everyone get that? No, certainly not everyone. A thirteenth month is an extra month's salary. As if you get paid for thirteen months in a year of twelve months. But it is absolutely not mandatory. Oh, so it's not a law or something? I thought, maybe I'm entitled to it and I don't know. I worked quite hard last year. Haha, I believe that immediately. But no, it's an extra employment condition. It must be in your contract, or in the collective labor agreement, the CAO. If it's not in there, you don't get it. Bram: Oké, helder. Is het dan hetzelfde als een bonus? Okay, understood. Is it the same as a bonus then? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. They are similar, but there is an important difference. A thirteenth month is usually a fixed amount: exactly one gross monthly salary. You get it anyway if it has been agreed upon. Bram: En een bonus dan? And a bonus then? Mieke: Een bonus is vaak variabel. A bonus is often variable. It depends on a certain performance. For example, if you personally achieved your goals, or if the entire company made a lot of profit that year. Ah, now I understand. Two years ago we received a small bonus because we had successfully completed a large project. So that was a performance bonus. Mieke: Precies! Exactly! And if the company doesn't make a profit, there's often no bonus either. You usually do get a thirteenth month, even if it was a less good year. Bram: Dat is wel een groot verschil. En hoe zit het dan met vakantiegeld? Dat is toch ook extra geld? That is a big difference. And what about holiday pay then? That's also extra money, isn't it? Vakantiegeld is wél wettelijk verplicht in Nederland. Yes, but that is the most important exception. Holiday pay is legally mandatory in the Netherlands. Every employer must pay that, usually in May. Everyone employed has a right to it. Oh yes, I didn't remember that exactly. So holiday pay is a right, and the rest is a luxury, actually. You could see it that way. A thirteenth month is an extra from the boss, not an obligation. Okay, wait. So you have the 'thirteenth month' and the 'year-end payment'. Is that the same? And then you also have 'the bonus'. Mieke: Heel goed. Very good. 'Thirteenth month' and 'year-end payment' are often used interchangeably for that fixed, extra month. 'The bonus' is usually variable and depends on a performance. Pay attention, for your KNM exam this is really an important detail. They often ask a question like: 'Is a thirteenth month mandatory in the Netherlands?' The answer is no, it is not mandatory. Okay, so if I get such a question, I need to remember: a thirteenth month is an extra salary, but not legally mandatory. Holiday pay is. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Dat is de kern. Absolutely correct. That's the core. Phew, thank goodness. I thought for a moment that I had been missing out on money for years, haha. Thanks for the explanation. Mieke: Haha, geen probleem. Succes met studeren weer! Haha, no problem. Good luck with studying again!

Ze praat met zoveel energie. Ik was even afgeleid. Wow, that speaker is good, right? She talks with so much energy. I was a bit distracted. What was this evening exactly about again? Haha, yes, she's very convincing. It's about the wage gap. So, about the difference in salary between men and women in the Netherlands. Oh yes, the wage gap. You hear about that quite often. But how exactly does that work? In the Netherlands, isn't that just regulated by law? Mieke: Dat klopt helemaal. That's absolutely right. The law in the Netherlands is very clear: men and women must receive equal pay for the same work. That is a basic right. Okay, but... why do we have a debate if it's in the law? Then there's no problem anymore, right? Well, that's the complicated part. The law exists, but in practice, we still see a difference. Women still earn less than men on average. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? So a woman who does exactly the same work as her male colleague can still have a lower salary? Yes, that can happen. Sometimes that's because women more often work part-time, or in sectors where salaries are lower. But sometimes it's also simply unequal pay for exactly the same work. And that is discrimination. That's totally unfair, isn't it? If you do the same work, you should earn the same amount, right? Mieke: Precies. Exactly. The principle of equality is one of the most important values we have in the Netherlands. That means everyone, man or woman, must have the same rights and opportunities. Equal pay is an important part of that. And if a company doesn't comply with that law? What then? Then they are in violation. A person who is discriminated against can go to the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights or even to court. Companies that discriminate can receive a fine. Okay, that's good to know. So it's a right you have. A very important right. Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. The freedom for you as a woman to be economically independent is naturally also related to this. Wait a minute, you're using the words 'beloning' and 'salaris'. What exactly is the difference? And what does 'loonkloof' literally mean? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. 'Salaris' is the fixed amount you receive from your boss every month. 'Beloning' is a bit broader; that can also include bonuses or a company car. 'Loonkloof' is literally the 'gap' or 'hole' between the wages of men and women. Bram: Helder. Dus een kloof in wat mensen verdienen. Clear. So a gap in what people earn. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. Pay attention: for the KNM exam, you mainly need to know the basic rule. To a question like 'What does Dutch law say about the salary of men and women?' the correct answer is always that the remuneration must be equal for the same work. Okay, so if I see this on the exam, I need to remember: the law says that a man and a woman doing the same work must earn an equal salary. That this is sometimes unequal in practice is called the wage gap. Mieke: Helemaal correct. Absolutely correct. That is the core you need to know. You've summarized it well. Bram: Ah, kijk, de discussie gaat weer verder. Nu ben ik weer stil, hoor. Ah, look, the discussion continues. I'm quiet again now. Mieke: Haha, goed zo. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, good. See you next time!

It's always so impressively quiet, isn't it, just before the commemoration. Yes, it really is. Everyone is waiting for the two minutes of silence at eight o'clock. It's an important moment. Bram: Zeker. Certainly. And tomorrow it's a celebration then. At least, that's right, isn't it? May 4th and 5th, I sometimes still mix them up a bit, quite embarrassing actually. Haha, you're not the only one. But for your KNM exam, you really need to know the difference. Let's clarify it. Bram: Graag. Dus vandaag, 4 mei, is Dodenherdenking. Wat herdenken we dan precies? Gladly. So today, May 4th, is Remembrance Day. What exactly are we commemorating then? On May 4th, we commemorate all Dutch victims of wars and peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of the Second World War. Okay, so not just the Second World War? No, that's a common mistake. It did start with the victims of that war, but now it's for all victims. That's why we are silent for two minutes at eight o'clock. Bram: Helder. En dan 5 mei. Dat is Bevrijdingsdag. Toen was de oorlog voorbij? Understood. And then May 5th. That's Liberation Day. Was the war over then? Mieke: Precies. Op 5 mei 1945 was heel Nederland bevrijd. De oorlog in Europa was voorbij. Nederland was vijf jaar bezet geweest door nazi-Duitsland. Exactly. On May 5th, 1945, the whole of the Netherlands was liberated. The war in Europe was over. The Netherlands had been occupied by Nazi Germany for five years. Bram: Vijf jaar... Dat is een lange tijd. En wie zorgde voor de bevrijding? Five years... That's a long time. And who brought about the liberation? The Allies did that. Those were soldiers from, among others, Canada, Great Britain, Poland, and the United States. They came to Europe to fight against the Germans. Oh yes, the Allies. I've heard that name before. So that liberation was finished in one day? No, that took months. The south of the Netherlands was already liberated in 1944, but the west still had to wait. There was a terrible hunger winter there in the winter of 1944. Wow, I didn't remember that. So the people in the south were already celebrating, while the people in Amsterdam were still hungry. Mieke: Ja, precies. Yes, exactly. But on May 5th, 1945, it was over for the entire country. That's why we celebrate our freedom on that day. So, just for clarity. The words 'commemoration' and 'liberation' are really the key here, right? Mieke: Absoluut. Absolutely. May 4th is Remembrance Day, a serious and quiet moment. And on May 5th, we celebrate the liberation. That's a holiday, Liberation Day. And then the flag can also go all the way to the top. On May 4th, the flag is flown at half-mast, as a sign of mourning. Mieke: Heel goed. Dat verschil is belangrijk om te onthouden. De vlag symboliseert dan de herwonnen vrijheid. Very good. That difference is important to remember. The flag then symbolizes the regained freedom. Pay attention for your exam: they often ask about the difference. Remember: May 4th is for remembrance, serious and quiet. May 5th is for celebration, a party. Don't mix those two up in a multiple-choice question. Okay, so if the question is 'what do Dutch people do on May 4th?', then the answer is something with 'remembering' or 'being silent for two minutes'. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And if the question is 'what do we celebrate on May 5th?', then the answer is 'the liberation' or 'freedom'. Okay, so in summary: May 4th, Remembrance of the Dead, silence for all war victims. May 5th, Liberation Day, celebrating freedom because the Allies liberated us in 1945. That is the perfect summary. If you know that, you'll be fine for the exam. Bram: Top. Bedankt. Nu voel ik me iets minder onwetend. Sst, ik denk dat het bijna begint. Great. Thanks. Now I feel a bit less ignorant. Shh, I think it's about to start. Mieke: Inderdaad. Tot morgen. Indeed. See you tomorrow.

Al die hoedjes, haha. Wow, what a crowd here in The Hague. All those hats, haha. Yes, that's really part of Prinsjesdag. And of course, the Speech from the Throne. The king has just read out all the plans for the coming year. Bram: Precies. Maar wie maakt die plannen eigenlijk? Dat doet de koning toch niet zelf? Exactly. But who actually makes those plans? The king doesn't do that himself, does he? Mieke: Nee, zeker niet. Die plannen worden gemaakt door het kabinet. Een goed onderwerp voor vandaag! No, definitely not. Those plans are made by the cabinet. A good topic for today! Oh yes, the cabinet. You always hear about them on the news. But what exactly do they do, all day? Haha, well, they govern the country. The cabinet is actually the daily administration of the Netherlands. Bram: Het dagelijks bestuur... klinkt belangrijk. Wie zitten daar dan allemaal in? The daily administration... sounds important. Who is in it then? The cabinet consists of all ministers and state secretaries. Okay, ministers, I understand that. Like the Minister of Education or the Minister of Finance. But state secretaries... what is that again? A state secretary is a kind of 'assistant minister'. Every minister has their own subject and their own ministry. Think of Healthcare, or Justice. Right, yes. Every ministry has its own boss, the minister. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. And all those ministers together, they form the Council of Ministers. The most important decisions are made in the Council of Ministers. And the cabinet then implements those decisions? Mieke: Ja, klopt. Yes, that's right. The cabinet makes policy. That means: they make the plans and rules for the country. The ministries, with all civil servants, then have to implement that policy. So the plans from the Speech from the Throne come from the cabinet. And they also ensure that those plans are implemented. Mieke: Helemaal goed. Absolutely correct. They are responsible for everything that happens in the country. From the roads to the schools and healthcare. Wait a minute, I always thought the government governed the country. Is the government then the same as the cabinet? That's a good question! No, not exactly. The government consists of the king and the ministers. Bram: Ah, oké. Ah, okay. But the king has no political power. The cabinet, meaning the ministers and state secretaries, does the real work. Bram: Huh, echt? Huh, really? I didn't remember that. So the king is part of the government, but not of the cabinet. And he doesn't make decisions. Mieke: Precies. Exactly. That's an important point to remember. The ministers are responsible, not the king. Okay, just to be clear. You just mentioned 'the Council of Ministers' and 'the cabinet'. What's the difference again? Mieke: Goede vraag. Good question. The Council of Ministers consists only of the ministers. The cabinet consists of the ministers and the state secretaries. So the cabinet is a larger group. Bram: Ah, helder. Ah, clear. So the Council of Ministers is a part of the cabinet. Pay attention, this is important for your KNM exam. You often get a question: 'Who are in the cabinet?'. The correct answer is then: the ministers and the state secretaries. Don't forget the state secretaries! Okay, so if I get a question about who governs the country, then I need to remember: the cabinet handles the daily administration. And it includes the ministers and the state secretaries. Mieke: Ja, precies. Zij maken en voeren het beleid uit. Yes, exactly. They make and implement policy. Bram: Top, weer wat geleerd. Zullen we nu een haring gaan eten? Great, learned something new. Shall we go eat a herring now? Mieke: Haha, goed plan. Tot de volgende keer! Haha, good plan. Until next time!
